Battle Mage Secrets - My Strategy Behind Equal Opportunity

Introduction

I'm here to share my Battle Mage Secrets blog post for the Battle Mage Secrets Challenge. The theme featured this week is Equal Opportunity. In this ruleset, all cards will get the opportunity ability which targets the lowest health unit. I will be sharing some tips for this ruleset as well as sharing a battle featuring this ruleset.

My Strategy For Equal Opportunity Ruleset

In Equal Opportunity ruleset, there's a few strategies to take into consideration. I'm focusing more on the strategies in Diamond/Champ but some of these strategies can be used in lower leagues as well. Usually in this ruleset, you want to put your lowest health creature as the card you want your opponent to attack. One of the strategies you can use is the martyr strategy since usually these units have low health. It's good to use cards with this ability in this ruleset because they can die and buff the surrounding units. I find this to be good in low-mid mana battles. I wouldn't use this strategy for 99 mana battles unless it's the life soulbound with martyr.

Another strategy is the Jared Scar strategy. I prefer to use this though when earth is not available or magic disabled. There's a huge counter to this strategy which is Mycelic Slipspawn since it has taunt and forcefield or cards with shield that can halve the damage. Basically, this strategy just lets Jared kill all targets with piercing and with that true aim it's pretty much guaranteed.

Just some other tips to consider are boosting your speed so you can go first and kill the opponent's low health units. I also think it's best to have a mix of melee and magic damage incase there's cards with armor or shield at least you have magic to go through all that.

As for choosing a summoner, I feel the best summoners are those that have a speed buff or debuff. It's super crucial to attack first in this ruleset because if the opponent is able to clear your unit first, you will be missing a unit to tank or do damage.

The Battle

I played this battle on my account, shawnnft. The battle link can be found here. This battle is in brawls and it is in fray 12 which is Wild Diamond. The ruleset for this battle was Equal Opportunity and broken arrows. It was a 60 mana cap battle with the fire and earth element banned.

Discussing My Lineup

Summoner, Quix The Devious - I chose Quix for the speed debuff. As I mentioned before in my strategy, the speed difference is very helpful in this ruleset.

First Position, Djinn Chiwala - I chose Djinn Chiwala as my frontline tank. I had a feeling the opponent would play a melee creature infront so this card would be good with the thorns. It also has nice armor and health along with great damage with the enrage and true aim so it can't miss.

Second Position, Carnage Titan - I chose Carnage Titan to be my reach in the second position. This was also going to be my main tank due to the equal opportunity ruleset. I chose it to have the lowest health so it would be targeted first.

Third Position, Djinn Oshannus - The main purpose of this card was to do some magic damage. It also had solid health and forcefield to defend against big damage. The best part is the speed so it can usually attack first.

Fourth Position, Chaos Dragon - The purpose of this card was to do damage as well. It's one of the best high mana cards and super value and usually great to use in high mana battles. It even has the utility of blind which will help opponent miss.

Fifth Position, Arkemis The Bear - The main purpose for Arkemis the Bear was to defend against sneak and give armor to my team. The best part is it can do big damage with enrage and has the utility of halving the opponent's units damage.

Last Position, Dr Blight - Dr Blight is my finisher. It's a super great late game card that will gain a ton of health with scavenge and for four mana it's probably the best 4 mana unit in my opinion. It also gave that extra magic damage to help follow-up with Djinn Oshannus.

Analysis of The Battle

You can see that I took my own advice and I did try my best to choose creatures with high speed and a summoner that has a speed buff/debuff. I was actually lucky that my opponent didn't choose to mix magic damage. I feel this cost them the game because my Carnage Titan was able to tank quite long with the shield ability. My Chaos Dragon also got a lucky hit on the Meerdali Guardian which I think pretty much guaranteed my win.

Do I Like Equal Opportunity Ruleset?

This ruleset is alright. It makes things a bit fun and does help encourage new strategies so I'm all for that. You can play some lineups that couldn't be played normally which is like what I did in this battle. Normally you wouldn't be able to put Arkemis the Bear in the back like that. It wouldn't be ideal to put him there because it can't attack from that position in normal circumstances.

Anyways that's all for me this week. Hope to see you again for next week's Battle Mage Secrets!
