Time For A Ship Coin

Good Afternoon

Today I have for you a a lovely 1979 Royal Canadian Minted coin.

The 1 dollar Elizabeth I Griffon, minted in 1979 to commemorate the 300th anniversary of the Griffon.

The Griffon was a 45 tonne French sailing ship built in the Niagara area of Canada. It's first voyage was July 1679.
On the 18th September 1679 the ship set off on another voyage and disappeared from existence.

Now onto the coin. It is a 50% silver coin weighing in at 23.32grams. A Diameter of 36mm and thickness at 2.66mm.

On holding the coin it is deceptively heavier than I expected considering it's size.

Presented in a lovely black case this coin really looks a beauty. Featuring Queen Elizabeth II at 37 years old on the back of the coin.

It really is as shiny as it looks in the pictures!

I bought this coin for several reasons, the first being it looked really nice. The coin is a beautiful coin to look at but I also decided to diversify my holdings.
I have mainly focused on 1oz silver coins so far in my stacker journey but with my most recent purchase I decided to try my hand at some other bits.
So this is how this came into my collection.

I hope that in time this will appreciate in value along with the rest of my collection. After looking at the market in the UK I am feeling a lot more confident with this purchase as at the time of writing they are selling for around £38. This would work out as a £2.00 profit from just buying the coin. That to me is a great start to this coin being in my collection. I hope it continues to perform well for many years to come.

The latest rumor locates a wreck that could be The Griffon in lake Michigan. I can't find my notes who was charged with research but the future expedition to investigate the possible wreck sites have been long due to lack of government funding. Some funding came from the Montreal Museum of Archeology with support from the University of Montreal I believe. 😅 Frankly, I don't think this project will get off the ground, but I like this coin.
