From Spending Money To Making Money From My Hobby

Origin Of Gaming Hobby
Gaming has been my number 1 top hobby since I was a child. I loved gaming and I believe it all started with the Gameboy Advance I got as a birthday present when I was a kid. I wish I still had a picture of this but it was the purple one that was kind of wide which you can take a look here.

After that I got hooked onto the Gamecube and the next iteration of the Gameboy Advanced SP. For the Gamecub I remember playing a lot of Supersmash Melee and for the Gameboy Advanced SP, I remember spending tons of hours leveling up my pokemon to level 100. I want to say I was a pretty good Super smash melee player. As for Pokemon, if I look back now I probably wasn't too great at it since there was more to being good at pokemon then just leveling them up to lvl 100. There were things like movesets, Ivs and Evs for the Pokemon to be more competitive which I never knew about until I grew up.

Paying To Play
The gaming market is huge. To give you a bigger picture according to Fortune Business Insights, the global gaming market was valued at USD 249.55 Billion in 2022. source

Part of this market was buying console and games. Even after the Gamecube and Gameboy Advanced SP, I ended up having a Laptop, Wii, a Playstation 2 and then a Playstation 3 and all the games that were played on it which thankfully my mom bought for my brother and me. I'm grateful that I had these opportunities when I was a child as there were many kids that weren't able to experience this. Thank you mom.

Anyways back to my point, this was an expensive hobby having to keep up to date with new consoles to play the newest games. From what I know, games and consoles have gotten more expensive as well. I'm not sure how it is now but when I first started games were probably around $20 and towards the end of my console gaming career around 60 dollars for new games. As for consoles they probably started around 100-150 dollars and now they are in the 200-500s and more.

I guess this was paying for entertainment for most people and maybe the few if you were great at the game you could stream or go pro. What if there was a way though to play and actually enjoy and earn from playing games. Well I can tell you that now there is and it's still fairly early and there's yet to be a sustainable model to be obtained but I see the potential.

Turning Gaming Into A Paid Hobby
It was around 2021 that I discovered Web3 gaming which was gaming on the blockchain and being able to own game assets that can be sold for crypto. I started with the game Gods Unchained. It was an interesting concept to me as we could earn from playing the game in a token as well as cards that were NFTS which could be sold. I started out the game purely playing for free and I actually made a fair amount of money from this game and I still have a fair amount of cards in this game.

After that I also got into Axie as a scholar by my friend who told me I could earn some money from playing this game. It was good money for the time as you could make like 100 bucks in a week which was a lot of money and a part of this was due to the bullrun. Following that, he let me become a manager and help him manage scholars.

Anyways now I'm into Splinterlands which is a game that I've had to put money into but I also can earn rewards which you can see in the picture below. There's also potential in the assets (NFTS) increasing in value. I still think it's far from a triple AAA game in terms of quality but in terms of a game economy this is probably one of the most well developed and complex game economies of all of web3 in my opinion.

Concluding Thoughts
The web3 gaming space is growing and it may make a dream of being a gamer fulltime job a reality for casual players that won't be as good as professional gamers or the personality to be a streamer. There is endless potential here and I'm here for the journey. I can't wait to see the growth of gaming in web3 where we can actually own in game assets and sell off if we decide to quit the game. I still can't do this full time yet so I consider this as a paying hobby~

It's interesting to see how your hobby right from childhood is gradually making you a rich man. Alot of people play game just for fun, they can't go a day without playing games , it's just their hobbies.

Good enough that you found web 3 where you can earn decent money through your hobby. Whether a full time gamer or part time, it's worth doing.

I am looking at supporting my kids on this hobby too. They found games so interesting and who knows, they might earn from it in the future

Thanks for sharing.

But not interested in learning gaming :(

O.O yes you can learn first then pass it down to your kids to play it for u!

You are right...I should edit that asap!

I tried spl, my brain nearly bursted

Then I am on hold since then..

Finding the right time to begin again, and that's why I said "not yet"

But you are right on this, learning first and passing it down to my kids will make sense. I hope they keep showing interest on it even when mummy is not ready for the game yet.

This gaming of a thing is something I've been looking into venturing into. I just don't find it easy to make out time for it. I guess I'll have to take this more seriously...

DLM started splinterlands as well not sure if he told you :P. I mean it does take some time to get how it all works. In the end it's still kind of an investment but if u like the game it's not too bad. Just gotta see the green lights and red flags on the project and you're good! I just personally find the gaming nft aspect better cuz there's use case. If you have an NFT purely for art well I don't know I just don't see the value but some people like the status it gives or maybe just genuinely like the art.

I love games but not to the heart like you do, I just do it for fun and there are times when I don't feel like doing it which it why getting on Splinter Land is not a good choice for me since I will need to be active.

You are doing pretty well with gaming, it is quite interesting to you judging by your background in the field.

not necessarily George. Actually they allow botting in Splinterlands so if you're not so active, you can run a bot in wild league and it will play for as long as you have the cards for it to play with.

Thanks man nice of you to say im doing well ; ;. I'm doing alright but hopefuly this web3 gaming matures more and we can see the realized potential

Sometimes when parents see their children paying too much attention to game they will take it from them not knowing that what they love doing can actually make money for them.
Just like you love game right from small and now web 3 game is giving you what you want.

And I hope you get more from it as time goes on

Hey princess. Thank you! Yes it really is great if what they do can make money but most of the time as a kid it's usually not and distracting us from our studies haha. I think it dpeneds on the parenting. If their child played too much games, i think it's fair for them to take it away as there needs to be control :')

In our country parents still demotivate their child to play game because they think it's waste of time. In this digital world we can earn by playing game also but many of them are not ready to accept it. I hope situation will change in the future.
I earned a little by playing game. But still I am interested in it. I hope I will start playing games.

I know a guy who gets paid to beta test games and at first I was like "oh wow, that's awesome! can i get in on that?"

This was when he told me that beta testing games actually kind of sucks because the games are broken and are normally from shitty studios. He says the amount of games that he was paid to play that he actually enjoyed were few and far between. Mostly, he absolutely hated all the games he beta tested and once you sign on, you have to fulfill the number of hours you agreed to before you get paid. You can bail on these contracts but then you get blacklisted.

It also doesn't pay very well because there is a long list of people that would be willing to take your place because everyone thinks that testing games for a living would be an awesome job .

I see. they do have this in web3 as well but as far as I know there's no contract. It's more like giving feedback and choosing the best one or doing rewards for those that end up on top which is a bit different.

To be fair though if u playing something in beta, it should be expected taht it's not perfect right? We should be going in knowing that there may be bugs or huge things that we might not like. That's where we give the feedback to improve!

as for this well, there's a lot of people that are willing to do this. I think it just depends on if its suitable for us. some people like trying new games and wont mind the bugs and get paid for it to give feedback. its like garbage cleaners like u and me we wouldnt do this but someones doing it for us and totally appreciate whoevers doing it!

yes, there are tons of people that beta test for free. this friend of mine is just one of the few that I have heard of that does this for a job. It probably could be considered "alpha" testing actually because when he is involved in testing it isn't yet open to the public.

Have you ever beta tested a game?

ya but it's usually web3 games. O.O there was bug of course but a lot of money to be made if u are early investor. i guess its like investor + getting first dibs to try to the game hehe

Gaming has mutated to be a work from home and make money😹😹

Your daily rewards is really cool.

Seeing your journey as a gamer, I am motivated to join in the web 3 gaming but then, can you send a link to download the Gods Unchained? Spliterland is a very complex game and I've tried to play it but to no avail.

O.O xD . yes thanks to Mom I was able to enjoy video games. some people don't have that luxury so it's something I'm grateful that I got to have during my childhood.

I know right for real who would have thought and hopefully it becomes more stable and sustainable and who knows it will just flow with real life easily swapping money at ease that would be crazy but u know a person can dream
