Explaining Land Expansion Phases

avatar

Land is currently the hottest topic in Splinterlands. It is likely going to remain the hottest topic for the entire year, and well beyond that.

Maybe it doesn't hurt to remind people where we are now and the future milestones for the Land expansion.

image.png

We are currently at version 0.5 of the land expansion, which allows you to basically claim your plots into land deeds and see their position on a high-level map. You can also trade deeds. This week players won't even be able to claim their plots, while the final touches of the next release are prepared.

The next release of the land expansion comes today on the mavericks' QA server (for a preview) and next week for real in the game.

Land 1.0 will be focused on surveying the land.

When a land plot will be surveyed, all its characteristics will be known:

There will be improvements to the map too, as well as the addition of filters based on the characteristics listed above.

When surveying takes place, starter packsnote to self: needs def can be purchased for each land plot. Two of them are plot-bound ("Building in a Box" and "Unstable Totem"), and the other one will include tradable tokens ("Time Vault").

For every land plot surveyed, there is the possibility to include any of the above starter packs (including all or none). Adding starter packs is done before the actual surveying, so you won't know the rarity of the plot when you choose the associated starter packs!

Additionally, there are guarantees to receive a certain number of plots of different rarities and categories when surveying exactly 100 plots at a time.

All these elements need to be taken into consideration since surveying comes live a week from now.

On top of that, there is an SPS proposal live right now that talks about directing land SPS rewards only to people who survey land going forward until land 1.5 goes live. If it passes, those who survey the land will receive more SPS rewards, and those who don't will get none.

What's next after surveying?

The next phase is land expansion 1.5, nicknamed the Secret of Praetoria. The likely deadline for its arrival is the end of Q2, maybe the beginning of July which is Q3. Practically, it's a super-simplified version of land 2.0, with only one resource, no buildings (other than keeps and castles), and other simplifications.

And finally, by the end of this year, we should expect land expansion 2.0, which is what has been talked about in numerous town halls as what will land include, up until the production of items and spells, which is the following phase, that will be developed in 2024.

Initially, land 1.5 wasn't planned, and the evolution would have been from land 1.0 to land 2.0. But land 1.5 brings enough features out to give players something to do until 2.0 is ready.

As a player or investor in Splinterlands' land, it is very important to know the details. This can save us from making costly mistakes in these early stages which are in a state of flux.

Great post! Land has been evolving for awhile, I'm hoping it will be an overall positive for the game.

I believe it will definitely be a positive addition to the game. If we only think at the number of cards that will be staked on land (and combined for better PP), that will change the economy drastically.

one problem imo is that a region will now be very heavily dominated by only a few terrains since there is a 85% chance of getting the dominant terrain type. When one looks at a mao there is not too much diversity there. I always thought that every region would have about 14 different terrains split up about equally

Actually, the problem is at the tract level. The situation may be better at the region level since the chance of getting the dominant terrain type is at the tract level. Still, the dominant terrain type can differ from tract to tract within the same region.

are you sure? in the TH they said that the image of the tile in the background was going to be important; I assumed this to be at a plot level.

are you referring to the images of the cards? Yes, each card represents a plot, but the chances of receiving a dominant type of terrain are calculated at the tract level. That's why, at the region level, there should be more diversity, unless the map shows only one terrain type for the entire region, in which case, it might not be very diverse.

I don't think this a problem. There's not much diversity in a single large area in reality, and we must rely on those in other areas to obtain the things we can't produce effectively on our own land.

yes it makes sense, but before this town hall I think the team hinted more at a 1/14 random distribution. Maybe it was just me though

I got the same impression. I was listening to it while driving my wife to work, so I may need to re-examine, but I think we'll get a better idea as this stuff is available on the test server.

Yeah, maybe "problem" is the wrong word for this. Actually, that might be a benefit. At a region level, there will likely be more diversity, but a tract is probably not big enough to develop well for a diversity of terrain types. That's why I believe it's a good thing there is a high chance of getting a dominant type of terrain.

I am probably going to get 85 plains and maybe 15 lakes / rivers / water from my tract. :D

Yeah, the issue will be with transportation fees and maybe (the induced?) market shortages.

Not if all plot owners do the right thing and work together for the greater good :P

The market fees will of course apply to all other users in other regions, too, so it will balance out the differing types of resources, if the game is designed well.

The next phase is land expansion 1.5, nicknamed the Secret of Praetoria. The likely deadline for its arrival is the end of Q2, maybe the beginning of July which is Q3.

In all this FOMO, I lost the launch date for 1.5... So, thanks for the reminder!

I will barely be ready by that time, if I will be ready on time, lol.

Looking forward to this. I've had my Tract since the land presale!

I am wondering how the starter packs will go later if it has to happen before surveying. If someone were to sell the land, would the starter pack go along with it?

The plot-bound starter packs are linked to the plots and they are sold together with the plots.

I like the fact that splinterlands is always getting interesting day by day. Thank you for the information

Yep, Splinterlands will not be the same after land is introduced (even 1.5).

I got just a plot. I wish my fellow landowners all the best in the game.
It could be nice to hold more land.
Peace

Hi Gadrian. Surveying land sounds like it might be fun.
It will be interesting to see where there are hills, mountains, and elevation gains and losses (topography) on the land map.

Gadrian, I use to enjoy hiking and backpacking around the Cascade ranges off and on for a number of years when I was younger and enjoyed reading trail maps with the topography showing on the maps. 😊

I haven't done much of that, but I think it is fun and... healthy.

It's OK as long as you can get so walking in about 45 minutes 3 days a week.
And do some strength exercise for muscles and bones.
I'm too old for backpacking but would like to hike if I had to car to get to the mountains.
