SPS Stake to Replace Collection Power Requirement

avatar

We know SPS stake would replace the Collection Power (CP) requirement for ranked games in Splinterlands since January or February, maybe even before.

But it was certainly put into the roadmap for Q2 this year. So it shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone.

It wasn't a surprise to me. In fact, before the surveying phase for land, I did sell my only 2 Untamed GFLs (1 BCX each) based on the logic that their main reason for being rented out (their 50k CP) will evaporate once this change happens. I wasn't wrong about that, and the few hundred dollars worth of DEC helped with my goals, but it's true now the two cards gained some usefulness for land (the whitepaper wasn't out when I sold them). Overall, I think I did a good deal by selling them at that time.

So, during this week's town hall, Matt revealed some details about how the SPS stake will replace CP as a requirement.

Matt shared this table, and I heard people aren't very happy with the thresholds there:

The important thing to keep in mind is these thresholds are not gateways for access to leagues, as CP was (and still is, until the new system is added). It is also not based on leagues, but on rating points, so it fluctuates even within the same league.

What those levels represent - Matt explained - was the amount of SPS one would need to have staked to have the same amount of SPS rewards as in present, in the league where they are playing.

If one has less SPS staked (or delegated to his/her account), the rewards will be diminished on the same principle as rshares and using lower level cards, but can still earn rewards at any league he or she wants to play and is able to reach.

Personally, I usually play in Champions II lately. Have reached as high as Champion I. Do I have the staked SPS for that? Not even close!

Will I buy more SPS to close the gap between what I have and what I'd need to optimize my SPS rewards from ranked battles? Unlikely!

I have a different goal and I am far from it. It is far more likely that I will (continue to) sell SPS to achieve my DEC land goal. It would help if others would buy SPS to optimize their ranked battles rewards. I'd have to sell less SPS rewards.

In a way, I feel I'll be giving away the sure rewards from ranked play for the hypothetical ones in land. I hope I didn't take the wrong decision at the beginning of the year, when I decided to focus on land.

In the end, this game means a series of choices.

I've never tried to buy or stake SPS
I should give it a try someday

Only you know if that's for you or not.

Great explanation. At the moment I am trying to build my DEC bag too for cards that I need.

How much DEC do you need? I need 1.2m DEC in the first phase, but eventually, I'll need 5m DEC staked.

Wow, thats a lot of DEC. I need probably at least 1m DEC

1m DEC isn't so easy to get to these days either. But we'll get there, one step at a time.

smart move to sell high CP cards with low utility..

Yep, sometimes not having enough resources is a good thing because it forces you to reevaluate your situation. That was my case with the DEC-B needed for surveying, and I needed to come up with more. That's how I decided to sell them.

Good insight on selling high cp cards that is rarely used.

Now it may be a little too late, as more people would want to sell them and probably the price will drop.

Yes interesting numbers for the SPS staking requirements. I can get full rewards in Silver but I am way short in Gold where I play most of the time. I wonder how many bots have that much staked/delegated to get full rewards. It will be interesting to see if anti-bot goes in before sps staking takes effect.

That will be interesting too. Perhaps some individual accounts may come up with the SPS stake, if they are botting, but for bot farms it will be difficult, unless renting SPS will be cheap.

Yep, whoever wants to buy, the price may have hit a low point.

It's a tough choice and I think the SPS requirements are a bit too high if we just want to maintain our current rewards. It just looks like people will have to make a choice and I think there will be a lot of people who just don't want to put that investment up.

Well, there will be a choice for sure. But over time, if people want to improve their SPS rewards, they'll stop unstaking to sell SPS rewards, at least.

I think the SPS requirements are a bit too high

Matt said he set the requirements a little high on purpose, and it makes sense, if most people would already have the needed SPS, there would be no incentive to buy more.

That's for sure). Now I would like to know what the crowd would do. I think the sps will grow up sooner or later...

I think so too. Have more SPS to get more SPS. The incentive is there to stop selling.

I think it says a lot when the price of SPS isn't moving up. Means likely players aren't keen to top up their SPS stakes.

Or, like me, they need to sell SPS to buy DEC for land. Otherwise, I would at least keep SPS.

It is crazy how quickly everything gets so expensive.

Would this impact the potential market for higher level cards as people will be less inclined to level up cards since they are not rewarded for it?

Hard to say. Both card levels and, when implemented, the SPS stake will have an influence on the rewards we will receive. I believe it will depend on how enticing the rewards will be. If the price of SPS increases, people will be more willing to consider optimizing both their lineups and their stake to earn more of them. If it remains at low levels, there will be some reluctance to invest more, although it would probably be one of the best times to do it.
