A 3rd NFT Set Coming To Splinterlands??

Aggy (Splinterlands Founder) Quote:

Mavs, I have a question. I have a major studio that wants to make a pack with us to sell. Normally we only have two packs available for sale. 1 main set and the one offset. This would be another mini set, and a deviation from our normal sales plan. I wouldn't launch another mini set with solely Splinterlands IP right now (I'd wait for Rebellion), but since it's a major movie studio I think it's worth exploring. For this I'm planning on 2M packs. Something like $5-10 with a protion payable in vocuhers. I can't share the movie studio yet and from new and existing entertainment (movie, tv, comic) franchises to crossover into Splinterlands.

Things to consider-

  1. We've Stopped printing transferable rewards cards.

  1. We're going to run out of Chaos Legion packs in a max of 25 days (There's only 770k packs left for sale since 500K are reserved for NFTy packs and chest rewards until Rebellion).

  1. Land 1.5 is going to have several ways for you to stake more cards than those that exist and that should be out in Q2.

  1. Rebellion isn't likely to until Q3.

  1. We'd target April/May to release this mini set.

-------END Of Quote-------

My Thoughts

The Splinterlands community is already stretched to far in terms of funds. I'm not against the above proposed idea but if done at current time it needs to be done correctly. Would it be great to make a partnership with a big studio, absolutely but what we don't want to happen is have such a deal enter the marketplace at the wrong time. Meaning if this deal happens and it doesn't perform well it won't bold well for any similar future deals. I would like to see such a deal take place when things are booming and the community has funds to spare. This potential third set also means that the months in which there will be no sets for sale on the Splinterlands site (after Chaos Sells out) will be shortened.

From my understanding the plan was to have no packs for sale for months to help boost all existing Splinterland assets which in turn will boost moral of our community. However I think there are work arounds that allow for this potential new set to be introduced. My suggestions (1) delay rebellion and make this new studio set the new mini set (2) make future mini sets the place in where such deals can be introduced (3) booster packs for this third potential set should cost no more than $5 with further discounts using vouchers (we aren't in a bull market anymore so price things accordingly) (4) the set needs to have a small print rate; 2 million might even be too much (5) Did I mention to not over price the booster packs; we want a quick sell out here to keep the studio intrigued and wanting more action. Slightly off topic but its no surprise to me that land is going to require more cards than we have currently available. The Splinterlands team know what they are doing and I fully expected them to consider future prints when creating card staking on land.

Additional suggestion:

If we must have a third set on top of our "regular" sets and it not being possible to sell a booster pack for less than $5 I would suggest making this "unique" NFT set have three cards in a booster pack. This way you can lower the price per booster pack while still having roughly the same amount of funds in sales for the overall print rate. For example Aggy mentions $5-10 per pack. Lets use the smaller number of $5. He also mentions 2 million packs so that is $10 Million in sales. Using that same number my suggestion would be to have a print rate of 3.5 million booster packs with three NFT's in each booster. Then instead of the $5.00 USD booster pack price Splinterlands can sell these unique Studio boosters for $3.00 USD. This would bring us to $10.5 Million in total sales (numbers don't include bonuses). Personally I'd like to see the set be smaller than the suggested print rate @aggroed suggested. I'm not against the overall idea of adding this third set and I think making such deals is important but I'd be much more excited for it if it was delayed for a handful of months. Are you excited at the opportunity to potentially purchase another set that leads to a partnership with an undisclosed studio? Lets hear your thoughts below in the comment section on this interesting and exciting news.

What Is Splinterlands?

Splinterlands is a blockchain game built on the Hive Network. The game itself utilizes NFT's for game play. These NFT's can be won in battle and/or purchased from the official Splinterlands marketplace or many other secondary markets. Game play rewards players with cryptocurrency and in game assets. While I get that it might seem like an opportunity, movie studios aren't strangers to the idea of shelving things until the time is right. The idea is cool, but yeah... the timing is not so great.

I am definitely stretched pretty thin after all of the things I bought last year. A couple of Runi, a Lux Vega card, and I'm still not finished maxing out my Riftwatchers set.

A little breather until the next set would be nice, honestly. It would give me some time to keep focusing on Riftwatchers. In the meantime, I can keep earning the new rewards cards and work on that without spending any money. I have one of the rare ones at level 7 already, which surprised me. I thought it would take me a year to max any of them out. 6 more of that one and it's maxed. It's a gold card, too.

I'm @sharkmonsters in Splinterlandia, btw.

I'm in favor of a breather as well. Lets have no packs for sale for 3-6 months. I suspect doing so might lead to bigger sales for Splinterlands as the anticipation for a new set would be grand. If we are just going from set to mini set to main set with little break between I suspect sales to be stagnate.

You're right about the more significant sales if they could just hit the brakes a little. The current rate at which things are coming out leads to little time for anticipation. I bought basically everything they've sold in the last year or whatever, but sometimes I thought to myself "YIKES! Give me some time to catch up!"

I'm lucky enough to have been in the game for years and built a good collection. I can sell or rent out assets to buy new ones and keep afloat without bringing in new money. What's a new player to do, though? If they weren't lucky with the timing of their entrance to the game, they'd have no choice but to bring in new money. During a bear market, people are understandably reluctant to take money from their paychecks and invest in something like NFTs. So I understand why newer players feel overwhelmed and exhausted by all of the things they missed out on this year.

That said, they've had the option to buy cheap Chaos Legion cards and packs for quite some time now as well. I suspect that people will start complaining about how there are no packs anymore when they're gone soon.

As much as I wish the team would slow down on bringing new things to the market for us to buy, I empathize with them because I see that no one is ever truly happy with any of their decisions. It can't be easy to try to keep this thing afloat while the markets have been doing what they've been doing.

I am afraid that Splinterlands started to get greedy lately and the value of the cards will fall so much that they will not become a motivation to play anymore. What's the sense to play the game where the NFTs value goes to null?

I'll be honest... I'm a little worried sometimes that I squandered the opportunity to make some life-changing money last year when my Splinterlands assets all had very inflated values and I chose to hold onto them.

I'm not totally black-pilled, though. I am hopeful that land will effectively take some cards off the market by using them on land. It still remains to be seen if that's going to be all it's cracked up to be.

I guess I'm willing to hang on and find out what happens. I think there's potential for the game to be successful still, but they do need to maybe give us all a breather and not do any more big money grabs for a while.

If we get the intended break between sets and card staking on land directly after I suspect our card values to start rising again.

They can't really make this the official miniset unless the proceeds are either burned or sent to the DAO. Seems unlikely with it being a partnership.

I'd rather they not do it but I can see some benefits so I'm not mad. I do wish it was 1 million packs though.

That did come to mind when I made the suggestion. There certainly would need to be a proposal initiated to change how the mini set works. The Splinterlands share of the partnership could go to the DAO.

I agree that a small set would be ideal. It wouldn't be a good look for packs of this nature to come to a sales crawl.

Yeah, you're right about it being the wrong time. Its probably lining up with a movie release. I really don't want this to be a promotion for a movie that people care about for a month and then we just have the leftover relics hanging out in the game when the hype is over.

Personally, I'd like to see the minisets go away entirely. I think the DAO needs to approve what new assets can be created and sold into the game and the DAO should get a 20% cut in anything it allows. Once this miniset comes out, there are going to be over 400 unique cards in playable in modern. That's too much.

If it is lining up with a movie release and Splinterlands somehow garners a bunch of immediate attention, I won't be too mad at that. Surely some will stick around and it will give us a chance to reposition.

I agree, there is just too many cards being introduced. Its one of the reasons for my suggestion number (2).

I don't see this getting Splinterlands any attention at all. At best having popular IP in the game may cause some tire kickers to take it more seriously quicker but I don't see anyone who wasn't already going to buy in making a buying decision based on this partnership. I don't even think fans of whatever movie or character it is will hear about it.

  1. I need to understand land. I don't have any and it seems that not participating will gradually destroy any value I have in Splinterlands
  2. TOTALLY AGREE with instead of something instead of more things to buy.
  3. I played a space cryptogame with the Star Trek licence and it is now inactive and assets are worthless. A license is only good if done correctly.

(1) Players will be able to "mine" resources that can be used in game/ can be used to create things that can be used in game. If I were to guess, the more cards one has staked on land the quicker the mining process.

(3) Interesting, Star Trek is a big name. Did Star Trek themselves do any advertising to their fan base? Thanks for sharing your insights.

(1) can staked cards still be played in Splinterlands battles?
(3) Its a long and upsetting story for those of us that lived it lol There was no promotion. Game was played as beta for awhile and just getting to alpha release. Promotion was always held back until game was stable with large user base. Never made it. Developers sold assets but never developed a game economy that supported further development.

(1) Just a guess: no, if they are in use in land I don't see how they could be used for battle. Kinda similar to how our cards on the rental market can't be chosen for Splinterland battles.

Think we need more outside players to join which likely will bring in new funds. Like you mentioned existing players who had stood by the game may have spent a ton. Not easy to expect high demand from existing players even if it is a big studio. !PIZZA

Agreed, an influx of players would certainly improve on things. Its possible the next bull run is when we experience another significant growth in player base. Hopefully by then Splinterlands new player experience will be improved.

This is a key point. The new player experience is REALLY rough at the moment and it is something that needs to be addressed. Many of the changes that have come in to stop bot farms from squeezing the economy as much were done at the expense of that new player experience too so its a tricky task.

I agree with you entirely. We already have a massive flood of cards atm with many cards not even seeing play. At least with the battle data that I personally have, the % of cards that I (and a degree of separation of 2) don't see any given week is a bit surprising.
