The Unexpected Friendship: Tarri And The Lock Picker

avatar

There once lived an old man( Mr Walts), who seemed to be in his late 70s. Mr Walts based in a small, not too popular yet developing town called Lockwood.

Mr Walts has lived in Lockwood since his youthful days. Although Mr Walts was a wealthy man, there was this strange hobby he had that made all the villagers always whisper about him whenever he walked past them. The strange hobby was picking locks. Over the years, the villagers have noticed that Mr Walts picks locks, but never stole anything the lock was guiding...this constant attitude of his, made the villagers so confused as to why a wealthy man will have such a thing as a hobby. Well, despite how confused they were about Mr Walt's hobby, None of them was bold enough to confront him about it except for a young boy Tarri. Tarri, was a 10 years old boy, who was very bold and Inquisitive...Tarri could ask literally anyone questions, without fear of being beaten or punished lol. Tarri thought of the right time to approach Mr Walts, and so he decided to approach him the next time he saw him picking locks again. Just a few days after Tarri's decision, he soon found Mr Walts picking an old rusty lock, which was used to protect an old box that was dumped near the bush...

Tarri noticed that Mr Walts was with lots of tools he probably used to pick locks. At that moment, Tarri began to wonder again, why Mr Walts, who was a rich man, was so dedicated to picking locks...he immediately went to meet Mr Walts to ask him about it.
Tarri walked up to him and said "hello sir, i have been watching you for quite some time now and i saw how invested you were inThis lock....if I may ask why do you pick locks? You aren't planning on stealing anything are you?".
Mr Walts looked up from the lock shortly after, to see who the courageous young boy, bold enough to ask him questions was. He actually had never spoken to any of the children from that town because, most of them were afraid of him, while the others were strictly warned by their parents who actually didn't know why a rich man would be picking locks, never to go close to Mr Walts. He didn't want to talk to Tarri at first but there was something about Tarri's curiosity that caught his attention, so he told Tarri to come closer and have a sit on one of the big broken blocks close to him. Mr Walts soon said "hmmm young man, those are good questions. You see the thing is I don't do it to steal, most people obviously know me to be a wealthy man...I do it because I love the challenge".
Tarri who became more confused by Mr Walts last statement repeated "the challenge '' unknown to him. Well, Mr Walts heard him clearly, and said " yes the challenge" Mr Walts tapped Tarri twice on his shoulder pointing towards the lock he had just opened successfully Tarri became more Interested in knowing what the challenge was. Mr Walts said " I have been picking locks since I was a young man...back then picking locks was a challenge for me, because i had to...I was a blacksmith but then as I got older, it became more like an hobby to me I love that feeling of accomplishment I usually get after I successfully pick a lock...it's just like i solved a puzzle". Tarri was so surprised by Mr Walts answer. People always thought he (Mr Walts) was up to no good, but Tarri found a wise and thoughtful explanation for Mr Walts strange hobby. In Fact, the old man's speech made Tarri want to know the mechanics behind each lock...Mr Walts, was also willing to explain the mechanics as long as Tarri was willing to learn.
That day, Tarri learnt that we could actually derive joy, even in something simple.

Thanks for reading❤️❤️

So picking of locks was just an hobby to him.
That's interesting!

Honestly, I was reading and expecting a bad intention from the man. Don't blame my soft mind🙄

Tarri is such a bold young man, approaching someone who most would be afraid to engage with in such a way. The answer he receives is intriguing and models a wonderful lesson. Although it would have been wonderful to learn a bit more about Terri, your story was a joy to read. Thank you for sharing your story with us, and for your engagement with other members of the community.

The lesson I learnt from this story was that if there is a confusion about someone, go and ask that person instead of going assumptions after assumptions.

Talking to people directly helps us solve riddles, and also brings peace to us.

Nice story @timix648 ..... I found you out via DREEMPORT

Nice story!
I love the young boy's spirit of curiosity. It goes to show that not every weird looking adult is a monster😅

But did Mr Walts just walk up to any lock he saw and start picking, or he had his personal locks that often picked??

Nice story, and a good moral of why we should not judge others a priori.

A beautiful children's story with an unexpected ending. The simple answer makes me think because sometimes we can't be happy with the little we have.

That's weird! Who enjoys picking lock as a habit!? Welk, we have Mr Waltz hehe! Totally strange and uncalled for. How bout other things to do to accomplish or perhaps solve a puzzle??... must it be picking lock?
One unique story you got there and I'm glad you shared it with us.

A daring pastime and a brave young man who faces fearlessly. Everyone thought he was a thief and didn't understand the feeling it gave Mr. Walts every time he faced the challenge of opening a new lock...The boy did understand and his curiosity led him to be able to receive the teaching.....

Good ending @timix648

Yeah that's why that adage " don't judge a book by it's cover" is a very important one to have in mind. Thanks for reading.
