The SEASON FINALE RENTAL POWER FIASCO! An Examination of Foolishness

Is it a bug or is it a feature?

It's the final day of the current Splinterlands season and that means we have a lot of people talking about something I've come to call the Season Finale Rental Power Fiasco? What is this incredibly named fiasco? Well, renters can cancel the cards they have out on rent early and that has some serious negative effects on the renters who are trying to rent just enough power to be able to earn more prizes. How often is this happening? Well, it's really hard to tell.

Right now four out of the last 5 top post on the Splinterlands Reddit mention this effect. Does this mean that this rental issue is effecting a majority of players? I really cant say! If it's effecting you I'd love for you to leave a comment here! One of the things we know about the scholars over at Reddit is that they absolutely love to complain and the crypto-spaces in the platform have always been especially toxic.

I don't want my bias against Reddit to cloud this issue though! If there is a largescale exploit in Splinterlands it's often communities like this that will discover and popularize it first so, if only as 'canary in the coal mine', it's worth paying attention!

It's takes two to tango here and if players are getting their rentals cancelled early and losing enough power to get less rewards that means there are likely a large number of renters out there cancelling their rentals to cause this. As someone who considers themselves a Splinterlands expert and is currently renting out tens of thousands of dollars in Splinterlands assets: That is really really stupid.

I've been playing Splinterlands for coming up on nine months now and something that you quickly notice is that the card rental market ebbs and flows with the season. In the beginning of any season it's nearly impossible to get any bites on rental cards at any price. By the end of the season you'll quickly find you can rent nearly any good card you want within hours for very good profit. When the season ends the rental market falls off a cliff. All this is normal.

Right now I'm renting out the majority of my collection as I overplayed yesterday and need to let me DEC Capture Rate catch up today. I reached my League goal for the season (Diamond 3) and I'm much rather go into the next season with 100% DEC Capture than land a single Daily Quest. Especially considering that the first full day of every season sees about half the normal number of games and thus is SUPER PROFITABLE for those of us who play! Oops, is that one of those Splinterlands pro secrets we're not supposed to talk about? Well, I'm spilling the beans!

Back to Renting: Cancelling your rentals in the final hours of a season is cancelling your absolute best Splinterlands income. What do you get for it? The ability to maybe screw over a stranger who is playing a game you enjoy. Reader, to me, that feels like the actions of a very bitter player. Also, one who is not so good at math.

Friends, we should be supporting each other whenever possible and not lining up for opportunities to screw ourselves (and maybe a stranger) over. If you are one of the players who is getting their rentals cancelled, I'm really sorry to hear that. If you are one of the players cancelling your rentals to troll other players, I hope I've demonstrated why you have a direct financial incentive to stop doing that.

Also, if you are a player who has not yet experimented with the rental market let me be the first to invite you into this amazing part of Splinterlands. Using the in-game tools or the advanced tool-set over on PeakMonsters.com you can rent nearly any cards you are not using to earn extra DEC before Chaos Legion drops later this month! It's a great way to support your account growth, the community as a whole, and learn more about what makes NFT gaming special!

Some of the renters do that, I rented quite a lot of cards since start of the season for whole season or more but since last week I am seeing some of the rentals being canceled and now I have to go and look out for new cards.

I understand some players may not want to rent their cards for long time but then either splinterland or peakmonsters should implement a maximum number of days rental setting for each card and then when I am renting I will know if the card will not be available for my entire desired timeline

Being a new player to the game buying cards is not an option now and renting surely helps to get good rewards (as bronze league rewards are crap) but players who want to put their cards out for rent should think long term not short term (keep rent cheaper at start so their cards will be first in list and then as season ends near cancel those and relist for higher prices)

enough ranting, now back to game :)

The problem is not the rentals. The rentals are a consequence of the end of season rewards being about LAST day situation instead of highest ladder achieve.

If they would rollback that change there wouldnt be so much pressure on getting CP the last day to get a couple more chests

I have had plenty of rentals cancelled on me since the rental system began. It has gotten worse over the last two seasons since they changed the league system to be based on at end of season instead of highest in the season.

In this season just over two days out I had rentals cancelled, fortunately I was able to pick up some additional power to keep me just in Silver but it has cost me more DEC then it would have!

I understand why Splinterlands made the change (i.e to stop card sharing to up peoples power & league) but it has clearly made it a situation where many card owners call back their rentals to "gouge" the market at year end.

Perhaps some sort of "penalty" for cancelling early on either side could be imposed or some sort of limit on cancellations allowed?
