An octopus sashays out of a sunken ship to introduce himself...

(Edited)

Hey there everyone! Welcome to my introduction post, where I hope to tell everyone a little bit about myself, and why I’m excited to join this community. When I first started looking into the world of the blockchain, and all the fun things that go with it, I knew I needed to make some big privacy decisions at the front. So, I decided to keep my name private, and just go by the pseudonym “Octopus”. I’m genuinely nervous my real name is in fact displayed somewhere here, and I have forgotten…how embarrassing…

Anyway, I’m Octopus, and I live in the United States. My wife and I were recently married and moved to a new state to try to experience some weather and seek better environments for our careers (we’re both teachers). Because I’ve decided to keep my name under wraps, here is a picture of us for reference:

Screenshot 2022-01-12 153438.png

And, for posterity’s sake, our ship captain:

Screenshot 2022-01-12 153514.png

I’ve spent the last few years working in Special Education but have returned to school to complete a degree in Economics, something I failed at in my youth (something about poor time management skills in American teenagers), and eagerly pursue now that there is some grey in my beard. This has required a level of positivity I wasn’t sure possible after 2 years of existential dread, self-evaluation, and quarantine, but boy howdy, here we are. I’ve completely relaunched my life, as I’ve had a near 180 degree conversion from extreme extrovert to a introvert who doesn’t drink. This had led to far better quiet contemplation, far higher quality in what I produce, and far more meaningful relationships among a much smaller circle. I also get to take daily walks down this path:

Screenshot 2022-01-12 182828.png

I’ll just quickly throw down that my favorite book is Nudge, a book on Behavioral Economics by Dr. Richard Thaler, but the book I’m reading now is IQ84 by Haruki-Murakami. My favorite thing to do is play Dungeons and Dragons, but my favorite thing to create is a meal for a guest. My favorite thing to write is an editorial, but if I wasn’t lying to you, my favorite thing to write is fiction. My moral compass pointed due north for so long, but as I’ve intentionally divorced myself from my landmarks and map, the needle freely spins, and I just do my very best to treat everyone that I encounter as I wander as I would treat a guest in my home. I hope as we encounter each other here, I’m able to do so in a way that makes your day better, or at the very least, your experience here positive.

What is it that I intend to do here, then? Well, I want to spend the vast majority of my time working of three projects:

Peasants on Payday: A food blog my wife and I have wanted to start. I'm fairly advanced for an American home-cook, and I would like to highlight my skills, while learning and experimenting with cooking other cuisines (I'm sure I'll draw plenty of inspiration from my new Hive friends).

271191959_1038111183418608_2854061294068834897_n.jpg

Lotus to Arius: A recurring post analyzing Splinterlands strategy through the lens of a long time, and current competitive Magic: The Gathering player. I’ll focus largely on strategy and less on economy.

$20 Crypto Challenge: Join me as I invest $20 into cryptocurrency and learn the hard ways and easy ways of the game. Our goal? $20 invested to $1000 by the end of 2022. Be sure to comment and call me out on these posts…this is very new space for me, and I intend for the content to be as humorous as it is informative.

In addition to this, I look forward to exploring other communities, learning and offering insight as I get to know this place. One thing I have noticed right out the gate is the large amount of compassion and generosity held and exhibited by the Hive community. As such, I will strive to make myself available to help with any of these topics, as I may not be an expert by any means, but I can probably answer a few questions in these areas:

Cooking: I can answer most advanced questions from a non-professional American kitchen viewpoint
Baking: I can answer some basic-intermediate technical baking questions
High School-College Writing: I can help you polish an essay if you need it!
High School-College Economics: I’m an Economics student, I would hope I could help you…
Special Education: I’ve worked in Special Education/Behavioral Health for many years, I can help connect you with resources for kids and adults!

Just reach out to me on Discord (@octopus#0138) if I can be of help in any way. I look forward to spending time reading and watching a ton of new content, and joining this awesome community of blockchain bloggers!

Edit: I of course had some typos, that I've corrected (including the c instead of o in octopus in the title). In addition, I want to take a moment to thank @lovesniper and @indayclara for helping me get started. So many questions were answered, and it was a great introduction to this space. Thank you again, friends!

-Octopus, out.

Welcome to the chain bud! Curious to see your thoughts on Splinterlands as a MTG player!

Thanks man! Obviously the two are extremely different, so I think it's going to be more hunting for similarities. However, with actual money tied into the resource management aspect of the game is where I think I will zero in on the most. Looking forward to seeing you there!

Sweet @octopus-mtg! Amazing introduction blog but I dare say the ship captain looks charming! Would love to get to know him/her on Hive Pets! You can also showcase your cooking skills in the Foodies Bee Hive. Make sure to share your Splinterland strategies on its community.

We have other cool Communities or you can check out the Communities Incubation Program. If you are looking for tips and information as a Hive newbie, click here: Newbie guide. This is also a dope guide you will like: How To Get A Great Start on the Hive Blockchain.

Just told my wife about Hive Pets and she goes "Ok fine, you can tell me about what a blockchain is. You have my attention." I'm sure we'll all be seeing a bit more of the pup soon!

Welcome to the Hive community @octopus-mtg!
I've delegated a little bit so you have something to work with, as long as you are productive, keep free of plagiarism or any other nasty things, it stays lol. Have fun!
We sincerely hope you find everything you are looking for and have found a new home here.

Seven suggestions to consider:

  1. Guard your passwords carefully, and publish and do everything except Wallet with the Posting key
  2. Use your Active key only for wallet transactions, Keychain, Hivesigner, and Peaklock,
  3. The Owner key and the Master password are only used to reset compromised passwords,
  4. DO NOT lose your passwords; but copy and store them offline in a safe place,
  5. Do not publish other people's work, be it photos or written, without credit, and be sure to source all of your work, even if it is your own.
  6. An introduceyourself tag is used only once, and
  7. Do Not click on any links in memos or comments that you do not know who they belong to. If it sounds too good to be true it probably is, so the old saying goes. There is nothing free here.

I found you because @brittandjosie and @jamerussell from @heyhaveyamet presented and promoted your publication to get more exposure and help you grow faster.

If you find yourself overwhelmed and need some guidance, or if you have any questions, there are informed Hiveans available who can help you; you can click to go to The Terminal in Discord here:

Have fun and happy Hiving!

Wow, great intro! I see that your post here was featured in the same #heyhaveyamet post as mine was. Nice to meet you. The food you have shown there looks wonderfully good, so good that it is hard to believe it is anything at all to do with "Peasants", even on a payday, lol. Is that smoked salmon I see? Yum! A real delicacy here in New Zealand.

You're in special education, huh? Very cool. Both my wife and I have learning disabilities ... I was an undiagnosed autistic throughout my entire schooling. My wife was born with Spina Bifida, and has the associated "executive function disorder" common with it. We have a special place in our hearts for special ed teachers like you.

Your $20 Crypto challenge sounds like fun. I'll have to keep an eye out and see how you go with it. All the best for your time here on HIVE.

Very interesting story! I wonder how an adult can find out if they are a hyperfunctional autistic person as I have heard of many cases where this goes unnoticed for years during school.

The simplest way to get diagnosed is ... to get married! Your spouse will work it for you pretty quickly, haha. That's how it happened for me, anyway. My wife was the first one who started suspecting my diagnosis, but I kept saying to her that "my a$$ is not a burger!" But in the end, I was formally diagnosed with Aspergers. She never fails to remind me that she was right! 🤣

Wow really? How awesome to have such a witty partner! I took a free test a long time ago which revealed that I might have, but I did the test only because I have been told several times that the way I behave and think and to things is...odd. Anyway, I am happy for the two of you, to be married with the right partner who can understand you is huge, just huge.

We came up with Peasants on Payday when we decided we would, each payday, splurge a little more than usual on fancier ingredients, or at least ingredients we're unfamiliar with. It usually yielded the meals I'm more likely to share here. As for my Crypto challenge, I'm looking forward to learning about it, and passing off small lessons I learn to the readers, but if we can make it to $1000 (or if we don't, that's fine too), I'll donate it all to a charity we vote on here!

I vaguely recall someone doing a challenge like yours back when I was on Steem. They weren't allowed to stake, nor to accept gifts, and many other such prohibitions during the challenge. They had to earn the crypto the hard way, by just posting and replying to posts. Is your challenge going to be something like that? Or is it just a "earn crypto on HIVE however you can" type of thing? Either way, it sounds like fun!

Looking back I see I did not word it very well. Some clarifications coming on my next post! Haha!

I'm challenging myself to turn $20 of (any) Cryptocurrency into $1000 of (any) Cryptocurrency. I'll start on Coinbase, but who knows where it will take me! My posts will be going over whatever knowledge I've gained or connections to resources I've learned to use. Hopefully I become a better trader, and take some people with me! And, I'll donate the $1000 to a charity at the end of the year! (Or if I hit it before then, fingers crossed).

Welcome home fam. Looks like you are in the PNW by your photo. Oregon here - I would love to eat 75% of the develed eggs in that image.

You have been cure-rat'ed by @master.splinter - wield the #oneup wisely.

You, my friend, can have 100% of the deviled eggs. They're smoked with bacon and jalapeno, I'll make that one of my first foodies posts and tag you in it. And yep, PNW. We're new to the area, and come from the desert. I didn't know things could be this green.

This is one of the most refreshing intro posts I have read here in a while. And I love the nickname as I find the octopus to be an amazing creature, the only thing I hope you won't do is to spread your tentacles and have too many accounts for one head lol. Humour aside, I respect your decision for privacy, somehow I wish I would have procedeed the same as revealing your real identity can be an issue for sure .

You look so cute with your wife and your culinary skills definetely exceed average expectations. Welcome to Hive, you're off to a great start!

Greetings Octoous:)
Your family looks heart warming, especially your Captain. I am very new to the Hive community, still looking for a good way to introduce myself. This search actually brought me to your post. I got a genuine feeling of affection for your life path and.. Your ”transformational cycle’’- if I may call it that. Happy to hear you went back to finishing your degree- that is exactly what I am doing at the moment- not only American youth is somewhat disoriented when completing long term goals.
I am a passionate cook as well, so I’ll be sure to follow your posts for good ideas in the kitchen and some new insights on how to prepare my meals
Thank you for inspiring me, I am surely a step closer to properly introducing myself in this community
Sorry if there are some typos. One of my goals is to better my spelling skills while I’m here.
Sending warmth from Serbia
