Market Friday at the Air Show - Part ll

IMG_1405-001.JPG

Today is #MarketFriday initiated by @dswigle (Denise, that's me!!) Join me as we share our markets across the globe. I stand amazed every week by the awesomeness that is sent to me. Different markets showing off the cultures of our friends here on steemit. It is always my pleasure to receive these treasures. Going places, doing things, buying merchandise. I have been surprised by many, not being familiar with the culture and I must say that it has been such an educational experience for me in so many ways; I hope for you also.

Today we will be going back to the Air Show, at Joint Base Andrews, a United States military facility located in Maryland. If you missed Part l, see here. The pictures were in sunny weather and a little better. The facility is under the jurisdiction of the United States Air Force 11th Wing, Air Force District of Washington, DC. They will be showing off different kinds of aircraft in the static display and some flying, along with the aerobatic teams flying through the air, with the greatest of ease. Last week, I focused mainly on the Air Forces' F-16 Thunderbird Team and showed a bit of the Navy's F-18 Blue Angel Team. I can tell you that they did not disappoint. The weather wasn't great, but, then it got worse, so the pictures were not as awesome in my opinion. That and no clouds... enough excuses, it's just life. Come on in, this time, you really need to buckle up. Keep the little girl inside of you from screaming too much, you hear me?

#14 air show.JPG

In all my years of going to airshows, this is a sight that I've never seen and it is the first time that it has happened in 12 years...the Air Forces Thunderbirds and the Navy's Blue Angels are both flying at the same airshow! We had the pleasure of watching the Thunderbirds start the flying portion of the show and the Blue Angels were the grand finale. In this picture, the Blue Angels have started their engines and the crew chiefs are running around accomplishing pre-flight checks with the pilots. Even for show aircraft, the preflights are a necessary safety check and these crew chiefs turn it into quite the show as they run around enthusiastically squaring corners and carrying heavy wheel chocks out at arm's length.

And They Are Off!

IMG_2396 2.JPG

And if the Thunderbirds beautiful Echelon turn wasn't enough for you, here is a picture of the Blue Angels performing one also.

While this is just a simple pass, I thought it was a beautiful shot (despite the rain and now fog) of the Blue Angels number 5 solo - belly-up.

Say hello to the mighty Curtiss P-40 Warhawk. Made famous by the Flying Tigers, who flew it while volunteering with the Chinese Air Force before the US entered WWII, this sample is painted with their Famous Shark Teeth to commemorate them. There were 13,787's made (all from the Curtiss-Wright production facility in Buffalo New York) and it saw service in the Pacific theater, the China Burma India Theater and in the European/Mediterranean theaters.

Here is the KC-135, in a low-pass with its refueling boom deployed. This is what it looks like when aircraft approach it in the air to receive gas. There are actually two primary ways to inflight refuel, this is a flying boom and the other is probe-and-drogue. With this flying boom, there is a "boomer" in the aircraft that is actively flying the boom, such that the receiver flies into close formation with the tanker, and the boomer flys (or steers) the boom into the receiver's receptacle. Not all pilots are Thunderbird pilots, but the pressure's on when refueling. Even though they might be in the clouds, at night or in turbulence, they need to stay within a small "box" behind the tanker, or the boom limits will be exceeded, the boom will disengage and they won't get their gas. To assist, there are lights on the bottom of the fuselage (the lighter marks under the back line on the fuselage in front of the engines and again, below the wings) that will provide visual signals to the receiver when normal visual references aren't available (night/weather etc.) and the boom itself is color-coded to help with fore/aft positioning. You can see the red and yellow paint on the extended boom, which is marking the inner limits of the boom. Get closer than the red and the boomer will disconnect you to avoid letting you shove the probe into the boom. Just above the yellow marking is a green area that marks the ideal fore/aft location, then there are identical yellow/red markings on the probe to tell the pilot he is getting too far and might lose his connection. If you look at the blister just forward of where the boom connects to the fuselage, that is where the boomer lays on his stomach and looks out a window so that he/she can visually fly the boom. The KC-135 is also set up to add Md32B hose-drogue pods on its wingtips to allow it to refuel aircraft that use the probe-and-drogue refueling system.

#16.jpg

While the mighty KC-135 Stratotanker has been operationally passing gas (in flight!) since Jun 1957, it also drinks a lot! With the four thirsty CFM-56 turbofan engines that are retrofitted into the "R Model," it has over 86,000 pounds of thrust available, enabling it to carry up to 200,000 pounds of "transfer gas", up to 83,000 pounds of cargo (and 37 passengers), or a mix of both. The KC-135 has an operational range of 1,500 miles with 150,000 pounds of "transfer gas", or if it wants to use all its gas itself, it's range goes up to 11,000 miles.

IMG_0449a.jpg

The airshow provided a close up look at this DC Air National Guard F-16 Viper. In service since 1978, the F-16 started out as a low tech primarily daytime multirole fighter (air superiority and air to ground) and has evolved into a very capable, all-weather 4+ generation fighter. There have been over 4,600 built and they are in service in over 25 countries throughout the world. Though few remember this bit of trivia, the General Dynamics YF-16 was selected after a fly-off of against the Northrop YF-17 in 1974. About 10 years later, the YF-17 was re-engined with a more powerful engine, made carrier ready and was sold to the US Navy as the F/A-18.

This cute little birdie is a Stinson L-5 Sentinel. The Sentinels were utilized during WWII for reconnaissance, observation, liaison, artillery spotting and as air ambulances. The Gayle Ann looks to have been utilized for off-shore observations as it is marked with having spotted one Japanese ship and 15 submarines. This easy to fly aircraft could land almost anywhere and stay airborne longer than most pilots bladder could.

#0.JPG

Until the Soviets made their copy of this mighty airlifter (the AN-124 Ruslan - NATO name: Condor), the C-5 Galaxy was the largest aircraft in the sky. It can haul twice as much cargo as any other airlifter. Think six Mine Resistant Ambush Protected vehicles (MRAPs) or six AH-64 Apache Longbow attack helicopters! Or maybe two M1 Abrams main battle tanks or one M1 and two M2/M3 Bradley fighting vehicles. This is the pinnacle of global mobilization. You can load it by lifting the nose, opening the clam doors on the rear and driving the load straight in while the previous load drives out the other end. It is only 50 feet shorter than an American football field with a cargo deck longer than the Wright Brothers initial flight at Kitty Hawk NC. Unlike most other airlifters that can be converted into troop carriers, the primary mission of the Galaxy is to haul equipment over intercontinental distances. This doesn't mean it can't carry passengers, it just won't be its primary mission and the troops don't ride in the unpressurized cargo area. The C-5's have an aft facing passenger area above the cargo deck that has 73 airline style seats permanently installed.

#27.jpg

I consider the Echelon turn to be one of the most beautiful formation passes. While you can't see it, from this viewpoint, each aircraft is at the same altitude and flying off the aircraft "in front" of it. Before they start the Echelon turn and when they roll out, they are in a line abreast formation. This formation is utilized on a daily basis by fighters all over the world as they maneuver into overhead traffic patterns to come up initial and pitch out to land. Recovering as a formation allows quicker recovery times than individual aircraft (air traffic control treats each flight as if it were a single aircraft and don't worry about separation distances like they do with individual aircraft), which is important when you consider how much gas they consume.

#25.jpg

While the Thunderbirds try really hard to make their formations look perfect to the viewing area (that's why they fly so close to each other), in this case, they are performing a Diamond 360 Solo Rejoin. In this maneuver, the main formation starts a level 360 degree turn in front of the audience and while they make one turn, the two solo's race in with afterburners going to rejoin before the turn is over. Here they are in the final phase of slipping into the Delta Formation.

IMG_0933.JPG

The Shockwave is a sight to be seen and a sound to be heard. It is a custom built race truck with three Pratt & Whitney J-34-48 jet engines. With a combined 21,000 pounds of thrust, the Shockwave team regularly races aircraft down runways at airshows and they typically exceed 350 mph on these short fast races! Very entertaining, look the Shockwave up on the internet and watch the videos

IMG_2168 a.jpg

#35.JPG

The MV-22 Osprey was developed as a cross between a "normal fixed-wing aircraft" and a helicopter. As you can see the propellers are huge (too big to be vertical on the ground) and the engines rotate from basic level to up and down. This allows those oversized propellers to power the aircraft like a helicopter to take off and land vertically and then rotate the level to use the propellers in a more conventional airplane, providing much greater cruise speed and distance than a helicopter. The MV-22 can carry 24 combat troops at 350 mph and has a range of about 1,000 miles. Plenty to support the Marines amphibious mission.

Let's not forget to pick up a trinket or two! It is #MarketFriday!!!

A flower. There must always be a flower to color my world. This picture is dedicated to #FridaySkyBlue #ColorChallenge by @Kalemandra, who colors my world. Every. Single. Day.

Some things in life are worth doing it again.
The exactness of that feeling will never come again
But, the joy?
Does it matter when the joy is still there?

It is nice to have a fresh voice, day in, day out.
But the charm of elevating this day trumps finding another to take its place.
Have you seriously looked for a blue flower in this season?
Happy are those that did.

Thank you for visiting my post 💖 Because of you, I come back to post again and again, I am encouraged by you, for the time you take to visit, comment or even upvote. For all of these reasons, I am eternally grateful. Don't ever forget what a wonderful world we live in, people. Let's hold hands around the globe and make this earth really spin. Some days, it is not as easy to see, how wonderful it really is. Kindness counts. Wherever you go, whatever you do.

I always post this poem down at the bottom of my posts. It is one that has become so near and dear to my heart. I only post the most famous part of it, but, wanted to post it in its entirety today.

they set my aunts house on fire
i cried the way women on tv do
folding at the middle
like a five pound note.
i called the boy who use to love me
tried to ‘okay’ my voice
i said hello
he said warsan, what’s wrong, what’s happened?

i’ve been praying,
and these are what my prayers look like;
dear god
i come from two countries
one is thirsty
the other is on fire
both need water.

later that night
i held an atlas in my lap
ran my fingers across the whole world
and whispered,
"where does it hurt?"
it answered,

"everywhere"
"everywhere"
"everywhere"

I learned a lot from reading this. There is an airbase near my house with F15s I sometimes notice. Also every so often I'll catch something mpre modern but theybare further south and usually head to see right away to avoid noise. In any case they are more excitig to watch than cargo and passenger planes

The F-15C remains to be one of my favorite fighters, even though newer versions a premier fighter have rolled off the lines.

It's proven design is still considered unbeatable in air-to-air combat and has over 100 aerial combat victories to date. The power behind them is staggering as they use that afterburner!

Thank you for stopping by #MarketFriday and perusing it. As always, I hope you are having a most wonderful day!

That is one big plane. Seeing it in perspective next to the jeeps, it is awe-inspiring. Just watched the latest spacex launch. It is amazing how human technology has developed. Again some really fantastic, magazine quality shots offfered up Ms. Wigle. Huzzah. Wish I had been there to see it:)

Oh, I wish you had been here! You and your son would have loved perusing the flight line speaking to all the pilots with their quite right answers, giving little tidbits of info that were lost on me somewhere.

I decided I could live with the lear jet they use for dignitaries. Although most will take milair most times. Oh, the size of these is staggering, isn't it?It is a wonder some of them don't fall right out of the sky.

Thank you for stopping in and really, we need to have coffee or a spot of the good stuff next time you come.

Have a most awesome day!!

I am amazed how many types of aircraft exist !!!! and how they are all different. a plane with a shark is really impressive !!!! :) very interesting you explained how airplanes refuel right in flight. Pilots must be true virtuosos in their field. it is a pity that the weather was not very suitable

Oh, it started out as a great day and the one set of the areo team got some really gorgeous moves in but the darker planes got the rain and no clouds in the sky. It did not play well with the the pictures, but, I posted a few anyway.

They are amazing pilots, are they not?

I sure wish the weather had been just a little better for that shot, but, I posted it anyway. I had a lens that should have made it a good shot and the clouds and rain just blew it for me. But, there is always next year and I can practice shooting afterburners until then. :)

That shockwave is pretty amazing and I cannot believe how fast it is! Did you see the trail of fire it left behind on the other shot? Oh, it really made the crowd ohhhh and ahhhhh. Doesn't the unexpected always? Thank you for stopping by and I saw your link out there somewhere so I will hunt it down in a few. And thanks for always being a part of the challenge!

Last weeks were a lot better, I am not sure if you saw those, but, it was raining in these so the others were more clear to me. I was able to focus a lot better.

Your blog, the second in the airplane series, is frighteningly good. A true story about that aviation rally. The first blog had, in fact, better and more spectacular photos. This second blog is full of airplane information. Seeing your passion.

One question, being a market ... could anything be bought? I refer to airplanes.

I wish you wonderful weeks in hopes you are going on vacation!

Thank you, Dan. @bluemoon

It took time to get it all together when I was writing it, but, it is a subject near and dear to my heart, so it is not a chore. Yes, I would agree with you that these pictures are not nearly as good and the others are far, far better.

So, all I could do was use what I had, and give the rest in writing. It started raining on the second day, so the pictures were of poor quality. Well, the rules state: You can go to the zoo or an art auction. Anywhere or anything that you pay money for a service.

How to Participate:

  1. Go to the market! Any market will do! Food, Clothing, Plant or Animal, if you wish. You can go to the zoo or an art auction. Anywhere or anything that you pay money for a service. I once went to a nail salon.
  2. Take pictures! Be creative (or not)
  3. Tell us a little bit about the market, what brought you here?
  4. Post the picture(s)
  5. Don’t forget to hashtag it! #MarketFridayChallenge by @dswigle

So, I think I am in the clear and yes!!! There were planes for sale, but, not the military ones. Uncle Sam would not look highly upon anyone who tried to sell one of his babies.

Oh, yes!! I will be gone after tomorrow and I will give you a rest from my presence. :) I am happy to see you liking PHC, I am sure that you are happy to find a home. I wish you a great weekend!

Yes, some less shiny pictures can generate great writing. It seems you've documented a lot and worked a lot on your blog.

Awwww! You are so sweet! Those birds really wow me too! I am glad you liked the poetry, I thought it maybe would get lost in all of the flyings. :)

Thank you for strolling through! It has been a real delight!

Now your post is educational experience for me, indeed :)) And I made it to the end despite of app crashed 4 times!! (both partico and esteem, that's weird)

Your knowledge of airplanes is amazing! Now I feel like want to know more about our Ruslan (or AN-124, or Condor?)... And all photographs all perfect (I wonder what equipment do you use for close up shots)

To be honest, I have never been to air show. We have them rarely here in Ukraine, and now I think it is because our country and army are not rich enough for that. As you said, those "birds" drink a lot! But I read about them on Steemit, and think that it would be wonderful to see one. It has so many in one - skill, courage, power and chic!

Thank you so much for exciting report and fabulous photos!!!

Thank you so much for such a lovely comment! If you like this one, last weeks air show was Amazing! We had rain in these photos but last weeks were many more close-ups and much better shots. If you have a moment, sneak a peek. You can find it here.

I think you will love them.

It does cost a lot for the air shows. For a jet to fly one mission is high!

A-10 costs about $6,000 + an hour
C-130 is primarily used for airlift missions and cost about $7,100 an hour
The latest fifth-generation fighter F35A is about $28,500.00 an hour
A stealth multi-role fighter the F-22 Raptor is over $33,500.00

So the cost is amazingly high. Thank you for stopping by and leaving such a lovely comment! I hope you have a wonderful weekend!

Wow... that is one impressive market... but no fish and vegetables? I guess you could pick a used plane or two!

Interestingly enough, I've never been to an air show... the way that they fly so close together... it's just some stunning skill there!

A lot of people have never been, the opportunity just has never presented itself. Someday... LOL Markets aren't only for food. I took you through the souvenir section. That actually sold trinkets to buy!!

A real market!

LOL Everyone wants to buy the plane. They do have the skills for sure!! if you didn't see last week, you should. The pictures were a lot better than this weeks. You can find it here if you are interested.

Thank you for the visit!

I've never been to an airshow, but would love to see one some day. Amazing what they do. Upside down, past one another about 780 mph, flying so close together, and at times upside down. Yowza. I think those folks have practiced a bit. And are incredible, and incredibly brave.
Love the old planes and new. And the big C-5 doesn't even look like it could fly. You did a great job putting this together, and really know your stuff about planes. Thanks for the cool whole story of going to the show. Some day I shall make one. Must be incredibly loud. Always sounds like those jets are tearing the sky when they fly by. They used to buzz us in the woods sometimes. SO cool to see.
BTW, is that a silver B-17? I've always wanted to take a ride in one of those too. They have that at our airport, but think it's pretty spendy. So I shall continue to dream big. Have a nice Memorial Day weekend.
Oops, never mind on the B-17 thing, I just went back to the first post. But I STILL want a ride in an old bomber. These posts are so spot on, great job DW.

Well, we need to change all that! Oh, they can get quite incredible! This one was good, but the pictures on the first one were better. It was raining in the second set. It happens.

I always feel like the C-5 will be falling out of the sky sometime soon. I just know it! It is pretty loud, but, having lived on a flight line for 20 + years will make you immune, almost. Or deaf so you don't really hear it anymore. Hehe! Yes, they do buzz once in a while, although they are not supposed to.

I have to cut it short to head off here... I will catch up with you again and thank you so much DD. You are one of the best. I love a visit from @ddschteinn xo

Always a pleasure to chat with you too. Though I don't seem to be keeping up very well lately. Too much going on in the summer months coming up. Even the grass has passed me up these days ( :
I went back and perused the other post (finally, yikes). All the photos are incredibly great. Hard to get too, since they move a 'bit fast' as they go by. Very good job in the photo department for sure.
As for buzzing, there were times the F-15's (?) were lower than us in the valleys, we could wave to the pilots. But what was TRULY amazing, was that we sometimes wouldn't hear them, until there was a sonic boom, or they passed by. Very odd indeed. Sound is a strange thing. And scared the hooey out of me most times. Well, hope your day is a good one.

Wow! That is awesome!!! You did really great!!! All these weeks in a row are spoiling me!!! I did an ice cream stand in March. I am not sure which was colder, the weather or the ice cream, but, I ate it outside so maybe it wasn't so bad!?

Glad you like the flying post, the air show was amazing! Thanks for taking the time to take photos and put this all together! Happy Memorial Day! Love to you!

Fabulous description of these fighter jets and air planes! I think you must have been an engineer in your past life!! You are so at ease with flying machines!

The souvenir shops are a must! And I would have bought quite a few model planes!

Cheers.

Hmmm, let's see Incorrigible
As I understand it, it means, not able to be corrected, improved, or reformed.

Corrected - Well one has to be wrong to be corrected
Improved - Perfection cannot be improved
Reformed -as formed as good as I am why would one want to reform it

So yeah that fits me

PS for anyone else that reads this I am of course joking

What an amazing air show, excellent photos of course but which plane were you flying? I’m betting on the P-49 Warhawk with those shark teeth in the front grrrr

I still want to know how you get the flying ones to pose for a photo, my photos of trees end up blurred and they don’t even move!

That shockwave truck would be handy for toasting mellows but you would want to have a very long stick!

Oh, really!!??

You just say to them. "strike a pose!" It worked for Madonna, I am pretty sure it will work for you.

Oh, yes. Roasted marshmallows are the best! I love mine burnt to a crisp!

You know it! The Warhawk would be my first choice, after the F-15 :)

Thanks for stopping by! It is always a pleasure to see you!

I have to say this one was even better than part 1! I thought I had comment after I proofed it and I cannot believe that I didnt! At least I had upped it lol. I think this one has some outstanding shot like the P-40, the close up of the Thunderbird pilot and also the flames that remind me of napalm!!! All of the shots are outstanding!!! I told you this was going to be a good one! I think it came out really well and I love to geek out on all the info! So very cool!!

The flames were pretty cool and really got the crowds attention. :)

I knew it was coming, but, it is still pretty exciting. It was not too bad for the conditions. You are the only one who thought it was better than part one, but, I guess most like pictures.

This one had a lot more written about the subjects, so I like that part more. Thanks for coming by and leaving such a kind and thoughtful comment.

And to think all this time, I thought it was meant to be nice... How naive can one be??

That is so NOT what I mean. Here is according to Merrian Webster:
Synonyms for diva

goddess, princess, queen

See you are all the above and more ;D

I mean it as nice!!! How could I mean it as anything but?!?

We both work hard and we dont bot buy. A real team :D

Every photo is amazing. This reminded me of my childhood days when trump cards were a thing then and we have a deck of aircrafts and ships and carriers. I was also given a chance to supposedly witness an air show during a hot air balloon festival here in our country but sadly the weather did not cooperate so they canceled that. I was unable to take good photos of the aircrafts on display because of the long queue. That was my first and I have to say I was disappointed. I hope I can go again and I hope it will be just like this show. That would be awesome!

Here goes my market friday post :D
