They are very nice. I am partial to the cartoon look of the first cards. It kind of added to the brand recognition of the game in my opinion.
Since there are similar type games like Gods Unchained and Hearthstone, the cartoon-flavor of STEEMMONSTERS/SPLINTERLANDS kind of sets it apart and makes it unique. Just my musings.
The art work is really cool though.

Worry not. Yes, we are moving away from an overly cartoony look. However that doesn’t mean we are abandoning any attempt at a unique identity.
Whereas Hearthstone and Gods Unchained have a “painted” look, Splinterlands will retain a distinctively comic book style that we will continue to refine and polish in our own way.
We have big plans for the future, and supporting epic stories within the world of Splinterlands (with suitable artwork) is a big part of that!

There is always skins.. Splinterlands could have cartoonish skins for the new cards if some people want that Alpha/Beta look.
