A Verteran Splinterlands Player Returns... and Performs Badly!!

New to the "Untamed" Expansion

hive_untamed.jpg

I first started purchasing #Splinterlands (then STEEM Monsters) cards in 2018. The collection I played with exclusively contained Alpha and Beta cards. Eventually, when "Reward" cards were given upon completing Quests, I gathered a few of those too, but not many.

Since returning to the game, I've discovered a whole range of cards I didn't own. Thinking I could continue to win battles as I did in the past with only my high-level Alpha & Beta cards (my highest rank is #151) I quickly discovered I was very mistaken. Even at level 1, many of these #Untamed cards are pretty powerful!

Not being able to use my Level 6 Beta cards because of tier limitations, I decided to purchase some Untamed packs and individual Untamed cards using DEC and enter some tournaments to learn their new abilities (I had my older card abilities memorized and new exactly how to setup the battles, that is no longer the case.)

The results of my first Novice-tier tournament wasn't great, I found myself with to little time to read the rules of the match, read the abilities of my cards, and choose the appropriate summoner and loadout all without the 2 minute+ time limit. I also forgot that Level 1 Summoners could summon Common cards up to Level 3 (whoops) and also noticed my teams facing a lot of Level 1 cards of Blue & Purple rarity, which I also didn't bother purchasing. I have two tournaments ongoing now and am hoping for better results.

Old Strategies are no Longer Enough

Furthermore, I noticed a strategy I have NEVER seen before (and maybe wasn't that applicable when only Alpha & Beta cards were in circulation,) which was to backload a lot of RANGED monsters, even when the rules state they cannot attack in first position.

However, that strategy worked for my opponent in this situation and my team was obliterated.

Clearly, I have a lot to learn with the new cards and will need to continue accumulating them if I have the hope of gaining higher tiers - because simply using my Alpha & Beta cards with my old strategies are not cutting it anymore (and this is a good thing! I like the higher diversity of play in the game.)

Advice is Welcome!

I still enjoy #GodsUnchained a lot more than Splinterlands in terms of the CCG experience, however I'm looking forward to the "Land Presale" coming up and am excited to make more choices in the game AFTER I have submitted my Monster Roster for a single match. If anyone can point me to tips for a Veteran that is returning to the (very different) Splinterlands game after almost 2 years, I'd be very appreciative :)

Thanks for reading!

I downloaded the God’s Unchained client a while back & played a match or two. I should really revisit it further. I also enjoy that Magic/Hearthstone style gameplay better too. I think Splinterlands lack of that format as an offering has hindered its growth.

I personally haven’t found expansion cards in Splinterlands to be necessities, my collection certainly skews heavily toward beta cards. I think once you get a feel for the various randomizes rule sets and some of the new monster abilities you may be facing you’ll do a lot better than your first reintroduction.

Gods Unchained is a lot of fun for sure. They've recently added more beginner cards that come with your account, so you have more deck-building options against those who have purchased a lot of packs and may have some legendaries.

Welcome back!

Isn't Gods Unchained incredibly expensive to play, as each transaction on ETH costs a small fortune?

Thank you!

Good question :)

A new user will start with a wide range of cards for them to use and as they play & level up, they receive reward card packs. You are 100% correct that the trading aspect of this card game (which is huge, just like any CCG) is so incredibly expensive because of fees. It is impossible to purchase a card work $0.06 without paying much more than that card's value in network fees.

I personally have mostly stuck to purchasing the card packs and did plan out a bulk trading order in the past to keep the transaction fees as low as possible, but it is a huge problem.

They are rolling something called ImmutableX which they describe as a "high speed exchange." I don't know how it works on a technical level, but if you're interested you can read more about it here: https://blog.godsunchained.com/2020/05/08/introducing-immutable-x/
