Buying Individual Cards Better Than Chaos Legion Packs?

Hello, Kamusta, Hola everyone! Luke Plays To Earn here today to talk card vs pack buying strategy for Chaos Legion.

(Video Version →

Currently card prices in Splinterlands have continued to fall...

With prices being lower on individual cards, the more chances that when you buy and open a pack that you end up with less value than you would have had just buying up individual cards.

Luckily Splintercards has a tool just for the topic that tells you the average opening of a pack → https://www.splintercards.com/tool-packvalue.html

Interesting things to note looking at it on December 21st

  • As you open packs on average it will equal out to a $6.16 value per pack
  • However if you only open 1 pack, most likely it will be 4 commons and 1 rare that is only worth $1.838. The more packs you open it will generally climb towards the $6.16 average as you get gold foils, epics and legendaries.
  • If you don't use potions you lose almost $2 of value per pack so ONLY OPEN WITH POTIONS!
  • Although packs are $4, Vouchers are worth $2.75 during this post. If you buy vouchers you are adding $2.75 but even if you use your vouchers you've earned from staking SPS, you are still giving up the opportunity to sell your voucher for $2.75.
  • Packs + Voucher = $6.75 and on average you only will get $6.16 value back, meaning you actually will lose value most likely by buying and opening packs versus buying individual cards on the market.

However this doesn't mean that there are no reasons to buy and open packs. Let's look at some of the reasons for each option...

Reasons to Buy & Open Packs ↓

  • Airdropped cards. The more packs you buy from the store, the more opportunity you will have at airdropped cards, including legendary summoners. Remember though that they aren't guaranteed and the best airdrops you will likely needed to have bought hundreds of packs to get a guaranteed card. We don't know the value of these cards or if you will get one so it's hard to say if it will make up a potential loss.
  • It's fun! It's ok to have fun with this game and not think about every penny of value lost or won.
  • You have a small amount of funds and want to take a risk. If you only have $40, maybe it's better to shoot the moon and see if you get lucky with a legendary or valuable gold card.
  • You can also buy packs to hodl, gain SPS airdrops, and sell them down the road.
  • If card prices go back up, especially by the time of the general sale, and Splintercards shows that packs are worth $5 or more, it will be a lot more worth it to buy packs and open them.

Reasons to Skip Packs & Buy Individual Cards

  • You can pick out the cards and summoners you want. This will allow you to focus on 2 or 3 strong leveled up decks instead of getting random cards in packs.
  • You won't lose potential value opening packs. Potentially if you are very unlucky, your packs may be worth less than $2 on the market so you have lost $4 of value.
  • You won't have to incur the 5% market fee when opening packs and selling cards you didn't want.
  • General sale is coming in just a few weeks when you won't need vouchers so waiting until then only misses you a couple airdrops chances and then packs will only be $4.

So what will your strategy be? Are you going for packs and airdrop points? Buying up individual cards to strengthen specific decks? A mixture of both? Would love to hear your thoughts on this as well!

-Luke

for me right now that's what i'm doing, because i'm not a fan on relying on chances, i think i'd rather save the money to surely get that legendary card than to gamble on that slim chance of getting it. plus, since there are still a million more packs to be opened surely that legendary would be cheaper and would actually not take that long for me to buy it. but thats just me hehe

Agreed! If prices continue to go down then the individual card purchases become even better :D

Hey, thanks for using 1UP. You can make your post eligible to earn ONEUP with the tag #oneup, not #1up. Hive-Engine tribes are not allowed to use tags that start with a digit, hence 1UP alone doesn't work. However, since you used #splinterlands, your post becomes automatically eligible for ONEUP as well.

1UP-devider-comment.pngYou've got 1UP'ed and earned ONEUP! When you use the #splinterlands or #oneup tag, your post will appear on www.1up.zone, your NFT and PlayToEarn blockchain gaming community. Learn more on Discord.

I was opening every pack I could based on my voucher allocation but now I've hit the 300 packs so I know I'll get the 2nd and 3rd airdropped cards. I'm tempted to sell the rest of the vouchers I get from now until the end of phase 2 and use the funds to buy packs and cards once the general sale starts. I think the card prices are going to drop even further than they are right now once the general sale starts.

I am buying and holding packs while at the same time purchasing special cards on the market.
Thank you for this informative article.

Will be eventually looking into this, just right now wanting more of a discussion around whether packs are even worth it.

For a new player this is a very good oversight. Many thanks for that. I was staking a few SPS and thinking about what to do with the vouchers I may get. Now I think I will buy a pack or two just for the feel and will sell the rest.

Yeah selling vouchers and getting some extra value is mostly what I am doing as well, not a bad way to go about it.

Yes if you're bullish on SPS, this can be a good way to do it.

I might buy a few packs from the general sale but like you pointed out, it is easier to buy cards and then level it up. The airdrop is also a heavy attraction. Last time around, I missed all the zakus and the mimosas that others got and I looked on.
