Today somebody got a hold of my Splinterlands account for less than half an hour, and that was more than enough time to rob me of more than 50% of my card's value.

We often don't think it will happen to us, until it does. I got kind of lucky that many of my cards were being rented, making them impossible to steal. I had very little DEC (~1K) and all my SPS was staked, so the tragedy was minimized to that extent.

The Damage

Yesterday I had around $1,100 worth of Splinterlands cards, and right now it stands like this:

The robber (@marozz19) took among my cards a Nightmare Lvl 10 that took me more than 2 months to upgrade. It was actually my first and only maxed card, and I was quite proud of it. I started playing Splinterlands in July, and invested only in the Spellbook and very little cards (~$30). From there, all of it was my own effort and dedication throughout days of gameplay. What I mean is that even though, it is not an insane amount of money stolen, it meant a lot.

I still don't know exactly how it happened, and where did I screw it up.

Somethings Must Change

After the fact, it really hit me that something must change in the future of Splinterlands Security System. As the game keeps growing and value is added non-stop, investments will keep getting higher and higher, and the incentives to try to hack accounts will increase exponentially. Safety issues will surely become a significant topic, and I don't really know if solutions will come from a secondary market or from the Splinterlands team itself, but I think that it will come as the need for it is real.

What's Next

I usually play my seasons very tight on money, so this season is completely dead. I'll be just renting what's left of my cards for a while trying to build a little bit of DEC to make a comeback, and while I'm out of playing I'll be 100% focusing in blogging. This is the great thing about Hive: you can earn by producing good content without playing actively.

I believe that my next 15~30 days will be like that, but I really do want to make a comeback soon. Although the incentive to Play to Earn in Splinterlands is a good part of why I play, I love playing it.

Hopefully I can keep discovering Hive tribes over and over while having some fun, and maybe try new projects too.

A New Project

As I'll have many more hours in my day, I have decided to start a new project that it was already on my mind for a while. I'll be starting coaching for Splinterlands.

The next Splinterlands update will raise stakes for higher ranked players significantly, and I believe that the competition will be a lot tougher. The main idea of my coaching sessions will be to develop concepts that you can apply yourself for future growth while analyzing matches, compositions, and general ideas inside the Splinterlands gameplay.
