Devil’s Hunt is a third-party action and adventure video game with a linear structure developed by the Polish studio Layopi Games. This independent court title is based on the universe of the original novels of former Polish-born professional footballer Paweł Leśniak: ‘Równowaga’ ‘Zachwianie’ and ‘Chaos’. A trilogy that introduces us to the personal odyssey of its protagonist, Desmond Pearce, towards the deepest part of hell in what seems to be his downfall without a small chance of turning back.

A story between angels and demons that already sounds like something

The story of Devil's Hunt - title takes us to a vision of the current world in which the eternal biblical war between the forces of good and the forces of evil is about to lead to a great “final” battle that will take place on the surface of the Earth. This resource based on the duality of two strongly polarized blocks so beloved in fiction can be flat for an audience that demands more of the plot, but the work seems to anticipate following the path of the sermon - or the author of the original book - and He presents these two sides with selfish and ambiguous enough in their actions so that, among all this hostility, it is also difficult to know who can really be trusted.

This is where the aforementioned Desmond comes in, the only actor capable of altering the course of a historical war and that seems endless. Our protagonist turns out to be, to his own ignorance, a kind of chosen one capable of tilting the balance of this confrontation to one side or the other. The future of the heavenly kingdoms, as well as humanity, will depend on a mere mortal who, until the previous day, did not even know how to manage his own emotions, much less make a firm decision. Desmond will have to start thinking for himself if he does not want to be a simple and apparent puppet for either of the two forces found, which will force him to have to face anyone who gets in his way.

How hard it is to love you, Desmond

Desmond suffers from a reality in which he is a victim of all the events that happen around him. That is, our avatar is trapped in a world that appears to conspire against his mental health on almost every possible social level, which leads him to an irrevocable situation in which his destiny will be marked forever. It is here that our protagonist will "resurrect" as if it were a phoenix to become an executor of hell - is there a noble title of the underworld more badass than this? -, which gives him certain superhuman powers that will allow him to alter his fitness and become a demon. As if that were not enough, he is also informed that he could be incarnating a figure known as the Savior and Destroyer, a demon so powerful that, from a utilitarian-military point of view, he becomes a decisive weapon to win the dispute .

The arc around Desmond will show us a certain evolution in his personality, which is presented to us from the beginning as a child of a rebel father and something foolish to, then, end up being a child of a rebel father and something more sensible but, without a doubt , more bad. The intentions that we identify with this character are sure to be there, but his personality and the reality he must face are not conjugated well, so it ends up being something difficult not to catch mania. The blame for it, perhaps, may have some easy jokes out of place - present from the second line of dialogue of the game - which, moreover, are made in situations that can be complicated to assimilate for an ordinary person.

The important thing: punching demons

When explaining the operation of the combat system, it is necessary to clarify that the first encounter with enemies will be somewhat abrupt and awkward. It is in this first contact with the controls when the average player can be scared a little with what seems to be waiting for him in the rest of the adventure since, although his controls are reminiscent of what was seen in other works of previous generations of the Infamous caliber , Prototype or Dante's Inferno, here it is done in a partially poorer way despite sharing with these some artistic design decisions in a possible attempt to pay tribute to them.

Although, if you really squeeze a little more in comparisons, the creation of Layopi Games still resembles a cult title that came out for PlayStation 2 called God Hand since, in both games, the main mechanic is to punch Everyone who gets in our way. The main problem of the comparison between Devil's Hunt and God Hand is that the latter knew better what it was: a carefree game - that is not careless - closer to arcade than to realism, from a position that became absurd but worked in in tune with all the elements of his approach. On the other hand, Devil’s Hunt fails to have not better read this opportunity to be simpler and, perhaps, falls short of not going more expensive with the sources and inspirations from which it feeds.

Within that duality between heaven and hell, good and evil, white and black in which the game's own story also moves, Devil's Hunt is located in the middle of the two distances: a gray that It is halfway to both praiseworthy and criticism. However, it remains a worthy tribute of the Polish brand to the beat ’em ups“ I only against hell ”style of the previous generation of consoles.

On the other hand, the concern and care for the story is a point in favor - and, even, it is to bring it closer to the player through a specific difficulty mode in which the adventure rhythm is reduced and streamlined - but this It pales at times and may be somewhat poor for certain players, although this does not mean that there are multiple script twists that, in one way or another, get us to keep our attention on a story that we have already heard in many other ways.
