Feeling overwhelmed when facing a new Splinterlands collection

Feeling overwhelmed when facing a new Splinterlands collection.jpg

I have been playing Splinterlands since October 2018. When I started to play, the Beta edition had just been introduced. Today, a bit more than 5 years later, we have a new card edition that is going live with Rebellion. In my career, I have played about 40'000 games just with my main account. So I would consider myself as an OG of the game...

The difficulty of dealing with a new collection

I normally play in diamond league and I'm close to champions in the Wild format. So a lot of the cards that I play with are fully developed. Whenever a new collection came out in the past, there was a similar feeling of being overwhelmed. It seems that with advancing age, this doesn't get any better. I struggled when Untamed came out and I struggled even more when Chaos legion was released.

Let's all agree that Splinterlands isn't an easy game to play. There are so many abilities, cards and options that it takes quite a lot of skill to be competitive. Now when I look at the rebellion cards, I feel overwhelmed like never before... It's not just the cards as such but there are some new abilities and mechanisms that I need to discover. The question I ask myself is if, after 5 years playing the game, I'm still ambitious enough to try to understand it. Seems I'm getting old...

The problem I see is that if I don't go into rebellion, I will probably soon be outmatched in Wild and in Modern. There are some abilities that are game changers I believe. Also the fact that you have the tactic stage where you can define what ability a summoners gives, seems to be quite disturbing to me. I still don't get it yet and I will need to try things out.

My strategy for learning how to play rebellion

Since the game mechanics are literally changed with the new tactic stage, I will need to learn how to play rebellion and how to use the new abilities. Instead of purchasing cards, I will actually use one of my old alt accounts that has the Summoner Spellbook on it. Since Rebellion is now the basis edition of the game, on this account I have all the starter cards from rebellion.

I have an old account that I'm not playing anymore and this account has now all starter cards from rebellion that I can test in order to learn how to play with Rebellion

I can now play plenty of games with these starter cards in bronze to learn how it works with the summoners that have double abilities. I can get familiar with the new abilities, the cards and then decide which cards, which summoners I will need for my main deck.

What is your strategy to deal with the new edition?

It's really a great strategy to use an alt to be able to learn, since earning money is not the objective, but rather gaining experience and understanding what's new. I'm more in the mood and courage, I was playing wild and now I went to modern to see all this new stuff, despite being in bronze 1, it's really cool to see the new stuff.

Maybe I'll go back to modern, I don't know, the only way is to play a little and enjoy each experience.

From past editions, I learned that I didn't need all the cards of a new collection and before deciding which ones to buy, I like to try things out. Using my alt account is a great way for doing so.

This is something very good, very smart to think about and do, as you discover which cards perform best, you will definitely go straight to them and thus not spend on units that you will not use.

This time, I will wait to see how others are playing and check their strategies... Getting old sucks and having less time for games sucks even more...
But, who knows, maybe it's better like that 🙂

I made some trial battles with the starter cards and I have to say that the game is totally different to play with these summoners. I believe it will require more skill and will be more difficult to use bots with.

Good point, I will do the same on an bronze level alt, let’s hope it’s still balanced with the older cards.

I played quite a lot of games with my alt account and managed to understand some stuff already ;-)

It's easier to get familiar with these cards while playing I believe. Using an alt account, allows me to play at low level without reducing my rewards :-)

I feel the same.

Also its really annoying how your card selection gets cluttered up with Rebellion starter cards.

Is there a way to address this?

To avoid having too many cards to select from, I sent all the cards I wasn't using to an alt account. This reduced the load a bit but I'm not sure how to deal with these starter cards...

So you mean you will be going back to your old account right?
It seem like you have a nice strategy and I wish you goodluck

I haven't considered it yet but I was planning on seeing how other teams beat me to learn. It might be a steep learning curve but at least I don't have to dedicate as much time to it.

I would say that the implemented changes are a very big change to the whole game play. Especially the tactic stage...

Haha I share your sentiments. It was just a huge mess when I was selecting my lineups to submit for battles, and on a few rare occasions, I almost ran out of time. I usually know where to find my cards, but the Rebellion cards "messed up" the ordering. I wished I could filter them away hahahaha. Anyway, I can't play the Rebellion cards because I don't want to incur the starter card penalty so I will still stick to my usual card collection, and get the necessary Rebellion cards slowly over time.

but the Rebellion cards "messed up" the ordering

Haha, same feeling here. In the past I sent all my cards that I didn't use to my alt accounts to keep some order. Now everything is upside down lol.

After testing the cards, I think that in the long term, the summoners will be a must to have. They are simply too strong to ignore...

Hehe I have only managed to test out some cards in brawl so far, as brawls don't have the starter card penalty.

The starter card penalty is the reason why I try the cards with my alt account. Like that I can try things out without losing any earnings :-)

That is a great strategy to learn Rebellion! I am also struggling with these new summoners and abilities. It will also take some time to level them up for gold where I like to play too.

Slow build here. I bought a bunch of CL packs so had a nice amount of cards, only bought 50 now and not opening most of the packs; guess I'll start checking the market and picking specific cards. Until bots are gone from wild don't think I'll invest that much time in learning new skills because chances are we'll be outmatched most of the time with similar cards.

I decided not to buy any packs and then purchase some specific cards from the market. I learned from past experiences that this is the cheaper way to go.

That will be my goal as well, and get some packs just for the fun of it.
