What's Avatars and Exemplars?

(Edited)

I’m still fairly new to Splinterlands but I’ve already finished the campaign mode and started dipping my toes into a few Frontier battles and it's been loads of fun. While exploring the website, I’ve been impressed by how much more there is beyond battles especially the marketplace, Land features and the overall community.

Even though I’m still shy about joining a guild and might wait until I build a bit more confidence, I would be checking that out soon. I'm glad to have played Hearthstone Battlegrounds a long time ago so I’m already familiar with some mechanics of the game which makes learning Splinterlands feel easier than when you have zero idea of what you are doing.

Avatars, Customizations and Exemplars

One of the most interesting discoveries for me has been how Splinterlands is turning avatars into something more. I feel lucky that I feel like I joined at the right time where I can be more personal with some of the aspects of my account. Instead of using just another profile picture, we can now create fully customizable avatars that can represent us across the entire ecosystem according to this update. Of course, I immediately tried it.

The numbers of things you can change is surprising. Even from a newcomer’s perspective, you can already define your character’s race, physical traits, clothing, accessories, backgrounds, and even visual effects. What I like the most is that while everyone starts with a basic set of options, there’s a clear path toward unlocking rarer and premium items and gameplay instead of everything being locked by paying for it.

I also like how easy to use the system is designed to be. External things like clothing, frames and accessories can be swapped freely at any time while bigger changes like race and body types seem to be more permanent. You can still change it though by using items found in the new avatar shop.

Avatar Customization and the New Avatar Shop

The introduction of the Avatar Shop takes personalization even further and it’s one of the features that really caught my attention while browsing the site. Instead of putting everything on the avatar tab, they added a separate shop for it which feels like it's going to be a core part of the Splinterlands experience in the future. From just basic choices to more premium, seasonal cosmetic upgrades, the avatar shop feels like it’s built for long-term expansion rather than a one-time thing. Here's how it looks like.

I find the concept of the outfit hilarious. The names of the clothes as Festive Ugly Sweater and Magic Ugly Sweater? Do they really need to name it like that? Either way, that caught me off guard and made me chuckle.

To someone who’s still learning the game, this makes me excited about the future updates to the avatar system and cosmetics. Cosmetics usually becomes a way to express your personality without outside factors. It’s refreshing to see their humor treated as part of the avatar shop rather than a boring name you see and forget.

Seasonal Events, Winterfest and Future Predictions

The Winterfest event is a great example of how Splinterlands plans to keep avatars feeling fresh and unique. Limited-time cosmetics like festive sweaters, holiday hats, and seasonal accessories add a fun layer of celebration to the game. It also adds a FOMO where it encourages you to get these exclusive cosmetics while it's still available. Even if you’re not deeply competitive yet, events like this give you a reason to log in and explore.

I really like that these items are only available for a limited time. It makes them feel special which is important for new and old players. Seasonal events also foreshadows that they would have future other themed events which would be interesting to see. I feel the need to save Glint as I am expecting what new cosmetics would be during the Valentines special. I'll certainly grab a few things I like in there.

Progression, Experimentation and Growth

What truly surprised me was how much thought has gone into avatar and Exemplar progression. Starting at Level 1 and growing over time feels natural. The way progression, though, is handled encourages playing the Ranked Modes to get Glints, or at least that's what I understood from reading from other's posts. Leveling with Glint and allocating points into stats and get abilities gives players real control over how their Exemplar evolves.

Don't worry though if you make a mistake since you have items to reset your stats. Being able to reset stats or even change core traits using craftable and tradeable consumables means early decisions aren’t permanent and frustrating if you want any changes. For someone still learning everything, that option is incredibly reassuring so I can experiment now and improve later.

Overall, this new system makes me feel like Splinterlands will be doing a lot of good things in the future. I can feel that they acknowledges that learning takes time and that experimentation is part of the fun. Instead of punishing curiosity of the players when they do it the first time, the game actively supports it, which makes me more excited to keep playing. Eventually, I hope I can step into the more competitive part of the game like the tournaments and social parts as well like the guilds and not just the Avatar system of the game.

My First Legendary!

Just a quick addition before I post this. I feel like this is a lucky premonition for what would happen in my Splinterlands journey. This is the FIRST reward I got after winning the first five times in Frontier Mode.

It's a legendary card which is supposed to be hard to get. I'm just happy and want to include this here.
