Equal Opportunity Modifier In Focus

Sometimes a battle feels simple at first but then you realize something small that changes everything. You think your units will attack one way but suddenly they all rush the same target. This is what happens when there's modifiers like Equal Opportunity.
This is where Splinterlands becomes interesting because when Equal Opportunity Modifier is active, every unit wants to attack the lowest health unit and this changes how the whole fight plays out. In this post, I will talk about Equal Opportunity Modifier and how different abilities can work with it or against it.

Modifiers

Equal Opportunity - All units have Opportunity (targets the enemy unit with the least health).
- Equal Opportunity Modifier makes all units gain Opportunity ability which means they can attack the lowest health unit anywhere on the field. This removes the usual front tank safety and makes backline units very vulnerable. Because of this modifier battles can end faster if you just built the same and did not prepare for this cruel modifier. If you understand how to use abilities around Equal Opportunity Modifier, then you can turn this chaos into an advantage.

5 Combos You Can Do with Equal Opportunity Modifier
| Modifier | Name | Description |
|---|---|---|
![]() | Taunt | All enemy Units target this Unit (if they are able to). |
| - Taunt is one of the strongest abilities when Equal Opportunity Modifier is active. Even if all units have Opportunity, they will still attack the unit with Taunt instead. This allows you to protect low health units so you can use those lower health units but with huge damage. Using Taunt in this modifier can completely flip the fight especially if the Taunt unit has good defense. Another good thing about Taunt is how simple it is to understand and use. You do not need complex setups just a unit that can survive many hits. You can even layer multiple Taunt units in your team. Just remember that when you have more than one unit with Taunt, the frontmost Taunt unit will always be the target of attack first. | ||
![]() | Thorns | When hit with a Melee attack, does 2 Meele damage back to the attacker. |
| - Thorns, Return Fire and Magic Reflect are very strong when combined with Equal Opportunity Modifier. Since units will always target the lowest health unit, you can bait them into attacking units with these abilities that reflect damage back. This works best when your reflect unit has just slightly lower health than the rest of your team. Every attack they receive slowly damages the enemy without you doing anything extra. This combo is very effective against teams that can do consistent damage since it won't happen if it misses. It feels simple but it can win battles on its own. You just need to be careful and make sure that the enemy uses the same attack as your counter. If you use Thorns when enemy has a lot of magic damage, then it won't work and you might just die. | ||
![]() | Scattershot | Ranged and Magic attacks hit a random enemy target. |
| - Scattershot is a good option if you do not want to play along with this modifier. Units with Scattershot will ignore Opportunity and also ignore Taunt. This means their attacks will go to random targets instead of the lowest health unit. This can help break enemy setups that rely heavily on bait units. Using Scattershot can make the battle feel confusing for your enemies. But sometimes, chaos is better than being predictable. This ability works well when you want to avoid traps and strategies built around Equal Opportunity Modifier which you would encounter a lot. | ||
![]() | Camouflage | This Unit cannot be directly targeted for attacks unless it's in the first position. |
| - Camouflage is a simple but powerful ability under Equal Opportunity Modifier. Even if enemy units have Opportunity from the modifier, they cannot target Camouflage units unless they are in first position. This makes Camouflage units very safe in the backline. You can keep damage dealers alive longer without worrying about their low health. Lily Shieldpaw is a good archon that has this ability but you cannot use her in Modern Ranked battles. This ability is very good when combined with fragile but strong attackers. It allows them to keep attacking while other units take the hits. Camouflage does not stop splash damage or damage that doesn't target the unit like Thorns or Redemption but it still removes direct attacks which matters a lot. | ||
![]() | Blast | Does half damage (rounded up) to Units adjacent to the target monster. |
| - Blast works very well with Equal Opportunity Modifier. Since units can attack any position due to Opportunity the Blast damage can reach many targets at once. This makes every attack more impactful and speeds up the fight. Blast with magic damage is even stronger since the blast part also ignores armor. This combo works best when enemy units did a wrong positioning like their Taunt unit being in the middle of the lineup. One good Blast hit can weaken multiple units at the same time. It is a simple combo but very deadly if not answered properly. |

Closing Thoughts
Equal Opportunity Modifier looks easy but it creates many hidden interactions. Abilities like Taunt and Thorns can turn enemy strategies against themselves. At the same time, abilities like Scattershot and Camouflage give you ways to avoid being baited. This modifier rewards players who understand how abilities interact, how you can use Opportunity for your own good and how to avoid baits and counters. Once you get used to it, Equal Opportunity Modifier becomes very easy to deal with and you can direct the enemy towards what you want to happen and not the other way around.
