Loving the Abyssal Elemental

Some battles can be unpredictable at the start. Fewer units means disadvantage but it doesn't mean you already lost. Sometimes, better strategies can flip the disadvantages and increase your chance of winning.
In Splinterlands, Modifiers can flip the game upside down. Equal Opportunity Modifier changes how every unit attacks and allows you more flexibility since any units can now attack from any position. This battle shows how Blast and Poison can shine together when combined with Opportunity from the Equal Opportunity modifier.

Battle Breakdown

Modifier in this Battle:

  • Equal Opportunity - All units have Opportunity (targets the enemy unit with the least health).

My Thoughts on Modifiers

  • Equal Opportunity Modifier give Opportunity to all units. This means units will prioritize low health units first making the battle fast. Since all units focus the same target Blast becomes very powerful because multiple units get hit at once. This Modifier can be easy to counter with Taunt but if you and your enemy is not using any Taunt units this can be an exciting battle.

Team Composition

Archon: Loving the Moo

  • Loving the Moo is a very strong Archon because he can give Poison to Elemental and Canisan Bloodline units and also give up to 2 units Blast and Magic Reflect. With many strong Elemental units like Abyssal Elemental, this Archon feels very flexible and fun to use. The Bloodline Dominion also allows him to use Elementals and Canisan from other elements adding Poison ability on top of them.

Units Chosen

Unit 1: Halfling Refugee

  • This is a cheap 1 mana unit that works well as a filler. The 2 melee attack, 6 health and 3 speed is decent early but Weary makes him miss more after round 2 so I consider him more like a wall than relying on his damage.

Unit 2: Daigendark Surveyor

  • He has no attack but Magic Reflect for only 2 mana is very good value. The 5 health also lets him survive a few hits which is useful since a lot of players use a lot of magic damage teams.

Unit 3: Shock Trooper

  • Shock Trooper provides very high magic damage for a low mana cost. Electrified Debilitation hurts my own team each round so this unit wants the game to end fast and Blast from Loving the Moo makes his damage even scarier.

Unit 4: Abyssal Elemental

  • I placed him near the back because I wanted him to act as a carry unit and damage dealer. Giving him Blast and Magic Reflect from Loving the Moo makes him very dangerous even with a low damage. Since Abyssal Elemental is an Elemental Bloodline, he also gets Poison ability from Loving the Moo's Bloodline Dominion ability.

Unit 5: Magmaforged

  • Even though he is from Fire Element, I can still use him because Loving the Moo's Bloodline Dominion ability allows the use if Elemental units from any Element. Poison from Bloodline Dominion helps slowly wear down the enemy during longer fights.

The Battle

Opening Rounds:
This is a fight I should've lost. First, I am using a lot of magic damage and the enemy has Void from Fithe Bladestone giving it to his Dwarf units. This halved a lot of damage from my end. I am also down in terms of numbers so the enemy's unit advantage is against me. On my defense, my units have better quality. I have better health which is good despite the less number of units. I also have better archon and the Poison will be huge in order to help with the reduced damage since Poison damage is not affected by Void.

Mid-game:
Even though I am still down on units, my favorite Abyssal Elemental has Resurgence and fully buffed along with Shock Trooper. Abyssal Elemental also has Loving the Moo's Blast and Magic Reflect and having an Elemental Bloodline, he also gets the Bloodline Dominion ability from Loving the Moo to give him Poison.

Final Rounds:
With a lucky poison towards the end, this put me on a huge advantage. With Resurgence ability still untouched, I can still win regardless of if Abyssal Elemental died. But no, he didn't need to die since poison killed Portly Cannon next round and a magic attack killed Canary Keeper afterwards.

Results & Reflection

What strategy I was aiming for:
The main plan was to slow the fight and let Poison do most of the work so I chose Elemental units despite the lower damage. Equal Opportunity Modifier makes every unit attack the same target low health target so Poison is good on doing the killing blow if they survived the round. Blast also helps spread damage to nearby units.

What surprised me:
I was surprised that I still won despite having fewer units. The enemy Archon countered me by giving Void to Dwarven units which reduced my magic damage but they didn't capitalize on this only using one Dwarven unit. Even with that disadvantage, Poison and Blast still carried the game.

What I learned:
Loving the Moo feels extremely strong in many situations. He enables Elemental units which is really fun since there's a lot of strong Elemental units from other elements. This makes him one of my favorite Archons to use right now.

Closing Thoughts

This match showed how dangerous Equal Opportunity Modifier can be when combined with Blast. Poison slowly stacked while Blast spread damage across the enemy lineup. Even with counters, this team cannot be stopped.

Loving the Moo, a new archon I tried, made everything connect. This Archon is becoming one of my top picks due to how strong he is in combination with my favorite unit, Abyssal Elemental.
