Rise of the Commons Modifier In Focus

avatar

Rise of the Commons Modifier only allows common and rare units to be used in battle. At first, this does not look very scary because there are many strong common and rare units in every Element. But once you remove epic and legendary units you start to feel the difference in power and utility. Some core units that usually carry the game are suddenly gone and you are forced to rebuild your lineup from the ground up. In my battle I really felt this loss because two of my main damage units were not allowed which changed the whole flow of the match.

Modifiers

Rise of the Commons - Only Common and Rare Units may be used in battles.

  • Bloodline Dominion gives strong flexibility in Rise of the Commons Modifier because it allows you to use common and rare units from other Element even if it is not your main Element. This is very important when your usual build depends on units that are no longer allowed. By using Bloodline Dominion, you can use strong common or rare units from Fire Element, Water Element, Earth Element, Life Element, Death Element or even Dragon Element as long as they match the Bloodline. This increases your options and helps you replace units with a stronger one from the other elements. In a modifier where choices are limited, flexibility becomes a big advantage.

Bloodline DominionUnits that share a bloodline with this archon can be summoned from any element and gain the linked ability.
- Bloodline Dominion gives strong flexibility in Rise of the Commons Modifier because it allows you to use common and rare units from other Element even if it is not your main Element. This is very important when your usual build depends on units that are no longer allowed. Weapons TrainingAdjacent Units gain half this Unit's attack if they have no attacks themselves
- Weapons Training is very useful in Rise of the Commons Modifier because it turns non attacking units into real damage dealers. Since epic and legendary carries are banned, you need creative ways to increase your damage. A support unit with no attack like Daigendark Surveyor or Ulundin Overseer can suddenly become a carry and help kill enemy units over time with the proper Weapons Training unit. This allows you to use lower mana units while still keeping strong pressure on the enemy. In slower battles, this extra damage can make the difference between winning and watching your units die one by one.
RepairRestores some armor to the friendly Unit whose armor has taken the most damage
- Repair is strong in Rise of the Commons Modifier because most common and rare units do not have overwhelming damage. Instead of trying to win with high damage, you can make the battle longer and let the enemy struggle to kill your front units. Repair restores armor which is very useful against melee and range attacks. When your unit keeps getting armor back it becomes harder to kill and the enemy may run out of momentum. In some battles, if timing and luck is in your side, you can block huge damage by just using Repair.
Tank HealRestores a portion of the Unit in the first position's health each round
- Tank Heal works similar to Repair but it restores health instead of armor. In Rise of the Commons Modifier, having a healthy unit is very important because you cannot rely on huge stats from epic or legendary units. The more health your tank unit has the more value each heal gives every round. This can allow your front unit to survive multiple attacks and give your backline more time to deal damage. Even in this battle where I lost, I wonder if I could win if I just had a Tank Heal unit that can constantly restore the health of my Ulundin Overseer.
ResurrectWhen a friendly Unit dies it is brought back to life with 1 Health. This ability can only trigger once per battle
- Resurrect ability becomes very interesting in Rise of the Commons Modifier because if you cannot defeat the enemy with stronger units you can defeat them with numbers. Abilities like Resurgence, Resurrect or Revive bring units back after they die which gives you extra bodies on the field. Even if your units are only common or rare, bringing them back can overwhelm the enemy. When a unit dies and returns, the enemy must spend more attacks to kill it again which slows their progress. In limited formats like this, having more units alive can turn the losses into wins.

Battle Breakdown

Early Game:
Normally, Rise of the Commons modifier doesn't really affect me or anyone. It limits your choices for the units because only common and rare units are allowed but you can still get around because there are common and rare units that are strong as well. Still, this doesn't mean it doesn't affect my lineup a lot especially when my core build has Abyssal Elemental, which is an Epic unit and Daarg Deadblast which is a legendary unit.

Mid Game:
Even before the first round ended, my Giant Alpine Skink and Moxian Rebel died while I haven't dented their lineup. That put me in an extreme disadvantage especially since they have a higher leveled and stronger Torrent Sniper and Mindless Thrall. Mindless Thrall is the most absurd of all. For only level 3, you can get a 3 magic damage unit which becomes 4 with Marlai Singariel. It's a deadly unit that needs in any magic lineup.

Late Game:
With that difference in damage and quality, my units started dying left and right. Even my Ulundin Overseer that has more than 10 health died in a round after he got to the front. The difference in damage was just too much and this resulted in my lineup losing in this battle. I guess the lost of those two units, Daarg Deadblast and Abyssal Elemental really did a huge damage in my lineup.

Closing Thoughts

Rise of the Commons Modifier shows how important synergy is when powerful units are removed. In my battle, I felt the absence of my epic and legendary core units because my damage was simply lower and my units started to die quickly. Even strong units like Ulundin Overseer could not survive long when the enemy damage was higher. This modifier teaches that you must adapt and build around what is allowed instead of depending on a few powerful units. If you plan well and use flexibility or higher leveled units like what my enemy did, you can still win even without your usual carries.
