The Strength of Abyssal Elemental

avatar

I was checking the marketplace around trying some new units that I can play around when I found Abyssal Elemental. It is a tank with a bit of damage which I find very complementing with Marlai Singariel. I also found some low mana cost units that may help me in times of need since I realized that a lot of times, I am playing on battles with low mana. The lineup I chose may look simple, but each unit actually plays a role that fits perfectly with the rest of the team.
In this match, I wanted to see how the others work but I will be focusing on Abyssal Elemental and how it can handle being in front while still helping the team’s overall synergy. The Resurgence ability caught my interest because it offers a second life when things go rough which can make a big difference if I somehow lost my tanks. Let’s take a look at the full lineup and see how they worked together.

Battle Breakdown

Modifier in this Battle:

  • Standard - No change to standard gameplay rules or mechanics.

My Thoughts on Modifiers

  • The Standard Modifier means there are no extra rules, no extra buffs or restrictions. So, the battles will depend purely on team composition and synergy. It makes fights more straightforward and fair for both sides. This kind of chances are perfect for testing new combos and seeing how well your units can perform on their own without extra diversions to check if your team is really strong or not.

Team Composition

Archon: Marlai Singariel

  • This unit can give the team extra 1 magic damage increasing overall damage. It’s a nice Archon that can boost the entire team’s magic attacks and helps weaker units deal consistent decent magic damage over time. Of course, do not use Marlai Singariel if you are not going to use a lot of magic damage units.

Units Chosen

Unit 1: Halfling Refugee

  • Low mana cost tank. It only costs 1 mana to use. It has 2 melee attack and Weary debilitation. Weary makes him skip his turns which happens more often the longer the round goes but still a good starter tank for low mana battles. Higher leveled Halfling Refugee will have higher health and damage and gets Heal ability as well making him a reliable tank instead of just an extra.

Unit 2: Daigendark Surveyor

  • Low mana cost unit. Only costs 2 mana to use. Has decent health and Magic Reflect ability for extra damage against magic attacking unit. This unit’s Magic Reflect helps damage enemies who rely too much on magic spam.

Unit 3: Abyssal Elemental

  • Good tank with decent magic damage. It has Resurgence that revives him once per battle with full health and armor while inflicting 1 damage to all units on the board. Even if the ability doesn’t always activate, it still makes Abyssal Elemental a reliable frontliner that can both take and deal magic damage effectively.

Unit 4: Shock Trooper

  • High magic attack with Electrified Debilitation that can deal 1 damage to your team per round. The self-damage is risky but the high damage from its attacks helps in the most surprising ways. Since this also uses magic damage, the full damage of his attacks goes directly to the enemy's health instead of armor.

Unit 5: Conclave Tracker

  • Conclave Tracker is actually just a filler in this battle. I added her because I want a unit with magic attack but I have no other options. Still, it adds more magic damage and synergizes a lot with Marlai Singariel's ability.

The Battle

Opening Rounds:
29 mana is usually an average mana battle but I feel like anything below 30 mana feels like a low mana battle. This is because most of the monsters costs high mana to use. In this battle, by simply using lower leveled units, I have the advantage in numbers which would help me take advantage of Marlai Singariel.

Mid-game:
Only a few rounds in and I already have the advantage for this battle. I already got access to the back line and began killing the enemy even before they damage my tank. This is the result of the difference in speed and power.

Final Rounds:
The only one who died in my team is Halfling Refugee and this is because my Electrified dealt the killing blow. The rest of my team are safe and I finished this battle relatively quick due to the advantage in damage and numbers.

Results & Reflection

What strategy I was aiming for:
The main strategy was to build around consistent magic damage and a balanced team. Since this battle has Standard modifier, I am free to try out my core team. I wanted to use Abyssal Elemental as both tank and support while stacking magic attackers behind it to keep up with the enemy's damage. Even with low mana, I focused on consistent damage rather than depending on a few big hits.

What surprised me:
I was surprised by how well the lineup held even without using any high mana units. The small units actually worked together better than expected. The advantage in numbers should never be underestimated. With balanced teams like this, even without big units, it can outperform the other team due to the difference in team synergy.

What I learned:
I learned a little bit more about Splinterlands in general. I normally have a hard time with low mana battles because the units aren't that strong. I also cannot put too much strong units due to the lack of mana. Learning my options on what I can and cannot use feels very important if I want to continue winning my Splinterland battles.

Closing Thoughts

Abyssal Elemental stood out not only as a tank but also as a consistent and reliable magic damage dealer. Even without relying on Resurgence, it still gave great value as part of the frontline.

The match also proved that low mana doesn’t mean low impact. A balanced lineup with clear synergy and direction can still bring consistent wins.
