New Frontier Jackpot Cards: My take on it

JackpotPrizes Frontier.png

Hallo everybody

This week I want to have a look into the new jackpot cards for Frontier.
They have been live for about a week now and I wanted to share what they are and how I feel about them so far.

I play Frontier with three accounts and once those accounts reach gold it usually becomes a bit boring to collect dailies.
The dopamine is just not there anymore.
I really want packs and I love opening them.
Daily rewards should feel like an actual reward.

So the big question is simple.
Did jackpot cards bring that feeling back.

First Impressions

First of all I really like the idea of this new edition.
Frontier needed something extra and this feels like another step in the right direction.

Jackpot cards can be found in the daily rewards from Frontier mode.

1.5% chance to hit a jackpot every 5 wins (max 3 a day

No Jackpot

Here is the downside.
The moment you see the number of chests you already know if you won something or not.
The excitement is already a bit less/gone, but still once you see such card it always nice.

Because of that I often do not even open the packs right away anymore, i have to postpone the excitement for what is in the packs.
My current strategy is to save them for a full week and then open everything at once.

Even then it can still be a bit disappointing lately.
Very few legendaries that I actually need.
RNG being RNG of course 😆

And just at the moment of writing this post and opening my weekly packs, this week it where 50 packs saved up, this happens.

This is still excitement

And this is how it looks when you actually hit a jackpot card.

Jackpot

Result

That feeling is definitely back.

Which Jackpot Cards Exist

There is one jackpot card for every rarity.

Common

Rare

Epic

Legendary

I must say the legendary looks very interesting.
The melee synergy combined with fire is something I really like.
Fire has never been my main go to splinter in Frontier.
This could actually shift the Frontier meta a bit.

Progress So Far

As you can see I already got lucky once.
Still a very long way to go to complete these cards.
Especially when you play with three accounts 😄

I do not see that as a bad thing at all.
It gives you something to work towards. But this might seems to be me a little low on the chance site, i hope it will keep the new player in frontier.
Long term goals are always healthy for a game, even in a mode like Frontier.

Final Thoughts

Overall I am very happy with this new mechanism.
It really shows how small a 1.5% chance actually is.
Playing daily on three accounts and hitting only one jackpot in a week puts that into perspective very fast.

This will take a long time to complete even for one account.
Let alone three.
But that is perfectly fine for me.

What do you think about the new jackpot cards.
Are you happy with them.
Or are you not playing Frontier at all.

Let me know in the comments.

See you on the battlefield 👋

Yes, the legendary is definitely the one I’m after, Fire is one of my go to teams so will really have an impact on my play but that 1.5% chance is really going to need some grinding!

I like the idea of the jackpot cards and it definitely increased my interest in playing frontier. I have one account I'm playing at the home level. I collected quite a few daily rewards, but no jackpot. I wish there was something to be done about the odds of getting one. Not sure what that would look like, but some way to boost my odds? Could be fun to have a login streak - login and play at least one game a day for x days and boost your chance by some amount. Then it resets on successfully getting one. The idea is more player engagement, right?

Yeah i like the idea of a increase of chance until you hit one if it bases on daily or something else i do not know....

But the team has to be caution with this because they have planned to release x amounts of card within x amount of period. And then they need to consider if a bot could in anyway take advantage. In this situation here i think not because frontier no bots allowed (that does not mean they are not out there).

@davemccoy / @blazekos sorry to ping you here but maybe valid feedback... if many more are thinking like this i might be something for a next iteration.

Its ok to ping us @beaker007, I love hearing the feedback from you and @drstealth. I like the suggestion about login streaks possibly giving some benefit in terms of jackpot odds. We will consider it, we already have a login streak system being worked on right now, so that might go well with it as a prize.

I like frontier, but honestly? Just a nice way to get cards to sell for dec to buy CA cards to increase my collection. It has too few cards to be interesting, and a good chunck of the time teams are almost identical and then it's a random fest. It's supposed to be an entry for the main game, now I wonder what exactly is the conversion rate... or if it is just another way of the usual players to spend some time?

Some solid points there. I think a lot of this really depends on where you are in your Frontier journey.

Once you’ve more or less maxed out the set, it does turn into a bit of rock-paper-scissors, I agree. But that’s also the stage where players are expected to slowly transition toward Modern. Collecting extra copies and selling them to fund a Modern-style collection feels totally fine to me.

Frontier cards are (and will be) heavily overprinted, and honestly, that’s a good thing for this set. Prices become very cheap, and while selling cards won’t give you a huge boost, it does provide small, steady funding to move into Modern. Nothing game-changing, but that’s okay in my opinion.

Note 1: You still need a spellbook to sell, so that already means a player has converted.
Note 2: I agree it would be great to see actual conversion-rate data. My guess is it’s still on the low side, but the team is clearly working on improving that, and in this market, that’s not an easy task.

As for “usual players” spending time in Frontier: I still see that as a win. Keeping existing players actively engaged in any format is better than passively playing land or just botting in Wild. Engagement is engagement, and that matters.

Absolutely! And more should be done to incentivise this, especiallly leagues of some sort. For me that's what slowly killing the game; it seems no one is noticing how absurdly expensive the game is becoming, and how facing near maxed/maxed decks in low leagues completely pushed players away. No real incentive to invest when you realise you either invest hundreds/thousands or you have no chance of competing.

100% this too!

Love the new jackpot cards! It does add excitement when you collect.

But I agree, there is no way anyone is going to come even close to maxing one out, especially the common that take 60 copies unless they buy them off the market.

If you get a gold foil or a black foil the question is keep or sell?

Hard question at this point… normally I’d say sell immediately and use it to buy the rest. But with this card, I honestly don’t know yet. Let’s hope the day comes when I actually have to make that choice 😁
