Splinterlands EOS Rewards Comparison & Observations

I wanted to give a few thoughts about the new rewards system now that we are officially a season in. Let's start with what my rewards looked like, then we can dive into some numbers.

End of Season Rewards

I was overall pleased with my rewards. I earned 77 silver chests. The DEC I earned was higher than I expected. I also pulled 2 epic cards which will be a nice addition to my deck. The total value is a bit disappointing; however, I am keeping in mind the current bear market. The dollar value isn't my main concern when it comes to rewards since that will vary wildly with the crypto market.

Comparison to Last Season

I thought it would be interesting to compare my daily and season rewards from this season under the new rewards to last season under the old system.

Let's start with the current season:

I was impressed with the burn value of the rewards I earned. I am currently stuck in silver without renting cards due to CP, so any opportunity to build my CP is greatly appreciated. The DEC haul was pretty good as well considering I only earned 2x on the silver chests. I rented some cards and finished this season in gold, so I'm interested to see what my earnings look like when I earn less chests but have a much higher DEC multiplier.

Now for the last season:

The rewards from last season were pretty pathetic. I mostly would log in to complete the daily quest and then log out. I started with 1 chest per day and slowly worked my way up to 3. The comparison is somewhat unfair because I rented into gold in the current season and stayed in my natural silver league last season. I don't think the changes would have been material since the difference is essentially 1 chest per day and a few more at the end of the season.

I think it is pretty obvious that the new changes were a net positive for me.

Observations on the New Rewards System

• End of season renting seemed slightly better, but it still got expensive. I'll have to make sure I pay attention at the end of the season to keep my intended league.
• Botting appears to be way down, but I think it will return soon.
• The mobile app update is very much needed. The team admitted in the town hall that it was a miss to not have that ready and I agree. It sounds like the mobile version is in testing, so I hope we have it soon. Having to be on my PC to claim rewards and see my new focus is a big annoyance.
• I played the game a lot more now that rewards continued after the daily quest was finished. I am really enjoying the game right now.
• The game seems more challenging. I'm seeing a lot more legendary summoners and monsters. My guess is people are renting the cards in their focus for a day. That is my current strategy. I'm hoping that won't be as easy when different focuses are added.
• I don't like having to claim the rewards to reset the timer. I'm not always available at the same time every day. It sounds like the Splinterlands team is working on a solution for that.

Overall, I am bullish on the new system. It has been fun and brought me back into the game.

Strategy for Next Season

My strategy for the next season will be to continue renting cards related to my focus. The first few days I will be more interested in winning than getting focus chests. Once I get back in the gold league, my ranking won't matter as much and I'll be able to put more energy into the focus chests. I'll continue to rent into the gold league. I hope to have a comparison post next season to see my performance in gold with silver chests and gold chests. I'm interested to see if its better to get the more valuable chests or more chests. Of course, two seasons is not sufficient data to know - RNG plays a big part.
