Splinterlands SHARE YOUR BATTLE Weekly Challenge - Giant Roc

avatar

The theme for this week's challenge is a creature whose legend has its origins in the Middle East - the Giant Roc!

Giant wings overcast the sky and with one fell swoop the elephant was caught in the clutches of its razor sharp talons 🦅🦅🦅

In ancient Arabic mythology, the Roc is said to be an enormous bird of prey, able to hunt and carry off elephants as their food. Stories of the Roc are most famously known in The Arabian Nights and Sinbad the Sailor. Truly a most fearsome legendary beast!

The Giant Roc card in Splinterlands is not one which will always be in the starting deck of most players. However, it has the great advantage of being a FLYING unit, so it naturally has 25% more dodge than others. It also has REACH, meaning it works well as a card behind the main tank, being able to attack from that position unlike most normal melee units.

I would say that the Giant Roc is pretty BELOW AVERAGE as most cards go, especially with the release of Chaos Legion, where there are now other options like Radiated Brute, who also has REACH but has 1 more Attack and HP. However, there is still a situation in which the Giant Roc shines!

Earthquake

Under these rulesets, the "below average" Giant Roc has suddenly gotten an immensely huge advantage. Earthquake will cause 2 damage at the end of EVERY round to ALL non-flying units! The Giant Roc's FLYING ability renders him immune, making it very likely it'll survive much longer, whilst inflicting maximum damage on the battlefield! It's amazing what a slight tweak to the rulesets can do to what is otherwise an unremarkable card. 😱

Let me present a battle I fought recently in which I used the Giant Roc. We both used DIFFERENT splinters AND summoners, and I even felt that my lineup had a slight disadvantage compared to my opponent's. It was a VERY CLOSE battle which I eventually won by the skin of my teeth! 🎉

I would not say that the Giant Roc was the MVP, but it definitely played it's part. It's REACH ability and the comparatively higher than average HP allowed it to contribute on its own to the overall battle, which eventually won me the fight.

As you can see, my opponent used Venari Knifer as his tank, which immediately put my ALL MELEE team at a disadvantage as it had THORNS, which damages all melee units who attack it. He also used the Goblin Psychic as his healer, allowing his tank to be even more durable!

The battle started out pretty badly for me. As expected, thorns ravaged my melee units. BUT as it wore on to the end, I eventually gained the upper hand. I can attribute that partially to my units all being beefier comparatively, of which the Giant Roc was one of them.

In the very end, the battle was won literally by one last hit. That slight bit of additional HP was what proved to be the edge I needed to eventually overpower my opponent. 💪🏻

I definitely can appreciate the Giant Roc and it's strengths. This is one of those cards which will be easily passed on by most players, but its the small nuances in noticing what cards like this can bring to the battlefield which will give a player the edge in squeezing out every tiny advantage to get the win. 👍🏻

For any players looking to try out the Giant Roc, I hope this article has given you some insight into its potential. 😉
