The theme for this week's challenge is a creature with origins in Greek Mythology. More commonly known also as Dryads, may I present to you - the Wood Nymph!

Elusive and flitting through the woods, magical beings of great beauty, companions of the Goddess Artemis 🧚🏻‍♂️🧚🏻‍♂️🧚🏻‍♂️🌳🌳🌳

Wood Nymphs have been depicted in Greek Legends as being shy magical creatures mostly living in peace in the woods away from men. Many of them have also been wives, lovers, mothers, companions and caretakers to the Gods and Man alike. We can thus see that they are generally gentle protectors, which is exactly how the Wood Nymph is designed in Splinterlands. ✨🩹🩹🩹✨

The Wood Nymph in Splinterlands is an essential card which will almost always be in the starting deck of most Earth players. At level 1, it has just 1 MAGIC ATTACK and 1 SPEED, with NO ARMOR and 2 HEALTH.

These stats make the Wood Nymph a fragile unit which needs to be well protected as 1 hit will almost definitely be enough to finish her off.

This doesn't make her weak though. Her true strength lies in her TANK HEAL ability, which allows her to constantly keep the frontline in good health! At 4 MANA cost, it isn't too hard to slot her into most Earth decks too! She is most definitely a top tier support card! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

Even the release of Chaos Legion does not reduce her relevance. Her direct competitor, the Goblin Psychic, whilst having more firepower and health, costs 2 more MANA! Therefore, the Wood Nymph remains a staple among Earth Decks, with the Goblin Psychic alongside her where they complement each other instead of compete.

As we can see here, the main purpose of the Wood Nymph is to heal. Stat wise, she gets only a minor increase in health at higher levels. Of greater interest perhaps, is the ability STRENGTHEN she gains at level 6. Once again, this firmly reaffirms her role as a supportive healer, giving an extra bit of health to the whole party.

Let me present a battle I fought recently in which I used the Wood Nymph. We both used EARTH splinters. At first glace, seeing the ALL GOLD FOIL lineup, I thought I was doomed. What chance did I have against someone who clearly out levelled me? 😱

I would say that the Wood Nymph was DEFINITELY the MVP, having single handedly turned the tide of battle. It's regenerative Tank Heal ability allowed my Tank to stoically take everything that was thrown at it with barely a scratch! It ended up being a PERFECT VICTORY, with ZERO casualties. 🏆🏆🏆

1st CARD SLOT

MYCELIC INFANTRY was chosen as the Main Tank. Its high Armor and Health and Shield ability makes it perfectly suited to the role.

2nd CARD SLOT

FURIOUS CHICKEN chosen to fill the slot as a 0 mana filler to take 1 hit of any SNIPE/OPPORTUNITY attacks or to take a hit if/when the Tank goes down.

3rd CARD SLOT

WOOD NYMPH sits right in the middle of the pack, offering her the best protection from any potential snipe or sneak enemies.

4th CARD SLOT

MUSHROOM SEER offers some damage and also counters any Magic attack wielding enemies with its SILENCE ability. Keeping it at this slot offers it some protection whilst it also protects the back of the Wood Nymph.

5th CARD SLOT

EARTH ELEMENTAL sits in the last slot offering minor damage with its 1 Ranged Attack. It's main purpose however, is to shield the backline from cards with the Sneak ability with its rather significant 6 health.

⚔️🛡Battle Action Report🛡⚔️

As you can see, my opponent used Unicorn Mustang as his tank, which was a pretty good choice, being a tanky unit with 11 HEALTH and the VOID ability. His Magic DPS units complemented his summoner choice and were placed behind some low cost cannon fodder units.

The battle started out looking like it was already his game. An entire team of GOLD FOIL cards - What chance could I possibly have? 😱 BUT as it wore on, I soon realised that the Wood Nymph was healing up EVERYTHING that my opponent could dish out. The Mycelic Infantry was admirably holding the line, always being healed up just enough to survive another round.

Slowly, but surely, the nonstop heals wore down the opponent's team and the battle was won comfortably, without a single casualty on my side! Even though I had a huge scare at the start at the sight of my opponent's team, the heals from the Wood Nymph were what proved to be the edge I needed to eventually overpower my opponent. 💪🏻

Would I have done anything differently? 🤔 This is one of those rare instances where I would say that the lineup I could field is just about as optimal as they come (perhaps my tank choice could have been changed to mirror my opponent with a Unicorn Mustang too?). From my summoner choice all the way to my pick of every card and their position. This is the strongest possible hand (based on the cards I have available to me) that my opponent could face. 🏆🥇

I definitely can appreciate the Wood Nymph and it's strengths. This is one of those cards which are very strong if surrounded with the proper team. The support role it brings to the battlefield will give a player the edge in squeezing out every tiny advantage to get the win. 👍🏻
