Splinterlands Experiment Update

I’m now 2 weeks into my Splinterlands Experiment : Renting for Champion League and so far I’ve had some pretty ordinary results. Even though I am learning and enjoying the experiment, it’s also a bit frustrating. I feel like I am at about the half-way mark and with the current Splinterlands Season finishing up in just over 10 days time I reckon that will be about enough to make a judgement on the success of my experiment overall.

So far I’ve managed to set up some Rental Decks with PeakMonsters which have been very useful tools that I’ve used to manage my rentals so far. I’ve been renting cards in short 2-3 day sprints where I am trying to maximise value by spending all my energy in Wild Ranked play while also having the cards available to compete in the Brawls. I’ve noticed that card prices can fluctuate a little bit so my rentals do change slightly each time, but nothing too drastic. My Summoner Set hasn't changed and so my overall play strategy is consistent while also evolving slowly.

In Ranked play I’ve really struggled. Basically I’ve been stuck in Gold League and haven’t been able to even get close to Diamond League so far this season. Since I’m renting Diamond level cards for the Brawls this is a bit of a failure because my cards aren’t playing to their potential. I could rent Gold level cards instead to try to optimise my Ranking but then I’d be under-powered for the Brawls where I need to be competing at Diamond level. I’ve used Xbot and played some Manual games too without any real success so this aspect of my experiment has been a failure to date. Maybe I’ll be able to claw my way into Diamond later in the Season and get my Ranked and Brawl play in alignment so I’ll persist a bit longer to see if I can do that.

With the Brawls I’m reasonably happy. I opted out of the first Brawl last week because I just wasn’t ready and I didn’t want to let the team down with a poor performance, but I played the Brawl this week in Fray #12 and finished with a result of 4 Wins and 4 Losses. This was enough to see my Guild finish 5th instead of 7th so there was a slight bump in Rewards across the team, but the difference between 5th and 7th is not substantial. I will likely get to play in 2 more Brawls this season before my experiment runs its course so if I can get a 50% win rate across those Brawls I’ll be fairly satisfied that this aspect of the experiment has been a success.

Overall though, I am not particularly optimistic that the Rewards from the experiment will end up covering the cost of all my Rentals. At the end of the day that is likely to be the deciding factor towards whether I’ll keep going with renting cards longer term. I know that the game is likely going to change again significantly in the next couple of weeks with the Land functionality coming out so we’ll just have to wait and see. Adapt and Evolve! Maybe I’ll be inspired to come up with another experiment to try after this one….

What summoners have you been using? I've had to modify mine a lot going into wild format, my win rate has dropped from 70 to 60 going from modern to wild on xbot. Not happy about that buy every time I make adjustments it does seem to help.

I've gone for cheap, but effective Modern Summoners and tried to build monsters around them.

Tarsa, Obsidian, Grandmaster Rathe, Astral Entity & Daria Dragonscale. I've skipped Water because Kelya blows my budget. So far I've gotten away with it and haven't had to forfeit more than a game or 2.

Dragon has helped me a lot with Delwyn, Quix, and Selenia. Quix at times is pricey but the other two are cheap and effective. Water with Kelya is expensive, buy sometimes Alric comes cheap and is useful. I've found that some of the alpha/beta summoners can come really cheap these days, keep an eye out on those.

I have noticed a couple of other summoners showing up cheap from time to time and I will probably build a few more summoner decks to rotate between if I decide to rent longer term.

For now though I'm just focusing on learning the game at this new level so I am keeping the same summoner set to make that easier.

Since the bot system is gone, he's more fun to play and it's so much better that we're playing with him in front of him now that he's a human and when a human loses, So there is a lot of anger.

That's an interesting experiment. I would say that it's pretty tough to get into champions. I've been playing 5 years and have a nice diamond deck. However, I haven't managed to enter champions for quite some time. Hope you do bettr than me ;-)

Thanks. I'll make 1 more post when I wrap up my experiment at season end. I know I won't get to Champions, but cautiously optimistic I can make it to Diamond on the next run in a few days...

I'm surprised that even on xbot you aren't making much headway towards diamond. I thought I was always short because I wasn't playing as often and because, in all honesty, I'm 💩. Mind you, I'm noticing a broad range of summoners on the higher leagues lately, so you're coming up against teams that are really well optimised for any ruleset.

Is Kelya really that much more expensive to rent?! Mind you, I'm only recently starting to realise the true value of shields and speed.

Kelya is usually around x5 to x10 the cost of Tarsa to rent. He's probably worth it and I could give him a run at the lower end, but at the higher end he'd take up 40% of the budget for a Splinter - which doesn't leave much room for good monsters.

I was tempted to build a Water deck around Possibilus, but he's rocks and diamonds so I prefer him in very specialized battle conditions.

If you are to break even or just be a bit below with what you've spent I would consider it a win. I believe that the true success is not about the actual win/loss record but rather being able to complete your experiment and confirming/disproving whether the strategy yields positive results or not. That alone is valuable to the community and the players. Its like you tested it so we dont have to. Thanks.

I see you are doing well
I see a lot of people giving good reviews of Splinterlands these days and I guess it is because there are no more bots so we can play human to human
