Newbie guide to Splinterlands

Welcome to Splinterlands, play-to-earn trading card game! You get to battle with other players and earn rewards in the form of Dark Energy Crystals (DEC), cards, among others. Since you are reading this, you might be someone who’s trying to get into the game or someone who already created an account and looking for some guide to be better at the game. I have been playing Splinterlands for a year now and have accumulated assets to play in the Gold League with my own assets with a decent win rate. Here are some tips that I wish I knew when I started playing Splinterlands:

Know the rules
You earn rewards through winning battles with other players where you earn DEC and accumulate focus points to earn daily chest rewards and season rewards. Every battle will have different rulesets which could restrict the type of cards you can summon on the battlefield, and you will have a limited time to decide on your play. Familiarizing yourself with the rules can greatly improve your chances if you are able to use it to your advantage.

You can learn more details about the rules, card abilities and useful tools through this website: https://www.splintercards.com/rulesets.html

Know your assets
The best time to invest was four years ago, the second-best time is now. A year ago, all Splinterlands assets (e.g., cars, DEC, Splintershards (SPS), land, etc.) were at an all time high however, since the bear market started the price of these assets plummeted, but it doesn’t mean that they have lost their value. Whether you are a casual player or want to be on the competitive spectrum, the best way to learn about the value of each card is through experience. Good thing there is a rental system where you can pay DEC to borrow cards from other players and use them in your battles for a limited amount of time. Having strong cards is one thing, knowing when to use them will help you earn better rewards.

Note: I personally use peakmonsters (https://peakmonsters.com/) for my market activities.

Spend wisely
Gone are the days when you can use starter cards to battle and earn rewards. The recent updates encourage players to accumulate assets to gain rewards. Don’t just blindly put your money into the game. Play in the lower leagues first, learn about the elements that you are most comfortable with and slowly build your deck to advance to higher leagues and reap better rewards. Since this is part of the crypto world, there is also volatility in price. Remember, invest only what you can afford to lose.

Patience is a virtue
Through daily battles, you will naturally learn more about the game. It can be confusing and frustrating at first, but you’ll do better as time goes by. Never rush your progress. What worked for me is to mimic the enemy line-up and positioning in my loses and incorporate my own strategy in future battles. Strive to slowly accumulate cards of the element you are most familiar with until you can play in the league of your choice rent-free. The is no shortcut to success in Splinterlands. You can also gain more insights about the game through youtubers like Dwayne Cunningham and Bulldog.

Enjoy the game
At the end of the day this is a trading card game meant to be enjoyed by the players. We wouldn’t know for sure if the value of Splinterlands assets will appreciate like in the last bull run, but I believe that the founders and developers are doing a great job for the game to increase the chances of it happening again. If you play your cards right, you will surely reap the rewards (pun intended).
