Splinterlands rentals & consumer psychology

For those unaware you can rent out Splinterlands NFTs via smart contract / delegation on HIVE.

Individuals rent most of their colection to participate in each season of Splinterlands, lately I have noticed a startling rise in rental prices with this comes opportunity.

First a minor detour in the following food theorist video you ca get an idea of certain tricks implored by a grocery store getting patrons to spend extra.

Not all tricks apply as Splinterlands rentals are a digital market place meaning we are limited in our tools. This being said there are lessons to be gleamed from the video.

Namely applying tactics like a ticking clock for the season & daily rewards not to mention impulse expenditures which never make sense other then in the moment.

Scaling up as a contractor you notice people often want, what they dont need simply because they find out its an option. Marketing from the ground up is psychological manipulation, it doesn't have to be viewed as such however.

In the end it boils down to being informed both how consumers behave & specifically all the market history for Splinterlands assets.

Take the common card from the Untamed colection Undead Badger a base version lvl1 Common Card retailing for $1.13 on average.

Renting out for 335 days at 5 DEC pays for the $1.13 purchase price, on top of that in this time its likely to appreciate in value.

Djinn Biljka a current legendary rewards card can be awarded for playing Splinterlands.

This card 👆renting out for 7-8 DEC a day at lvl1 base card, though selling for $1.50, I have won so many, that I have airdropped like 5. Long story short you may want to rent as appose to sell some of these cards.

Rarity or scarcity doesn't necessarily denote value, however combined with the assets utility you can hazard a guess.

Taking into account the projects popularity gives you an idea of the risk involved not every P2E game will be the next Splinterlands.

Finally understand consumer psychology, like impulse items rentals fall into a category of expenditure a person doesn't think about.

Personally I find customers will basically tack things on to a bid they dont need like sealing their driveway which costs a few hundred dollars to a few thousand dollars more, but when they spend $20,000 - $40,000 or some cases more on the project you want all the bells & whistles.

I try & talk them out of it, but the customers always right even when they are wrong, in areas where you expect annual snowfall you should avoid sealing a driveway as once water or snow gets on it this becomes dangerous.

Though from the customers perspective its a good idea preventing damage to the driveway, but realistically sealing is meant for interior floors.

In much the same way people dont think about impulse expenses, logic goes out the window. This is where the savvy can use this impulsive nature of the market to benefit.

With someone renting Splinterlands cards, from their perspective they spend 70 DEC for a season 14 days.

If you rented this 👇 card out for 14 days you would make 70 DEC roughly $0.05 at time of writing, not bad but scale that up.

From that we can gleam the long term investment risks with certain cards are the prices to high, low, or an average.

With the undead badger the price point may decrease but not by much its likely even when short selling, renting income will make up the difference.

In a gold rush your better off supplying shovels, then prospecting for it personally, less effort more profit.

With Splinterlands rentals to gage risk its best to understand demand with 3,300,000 Battles being played daily by players 100,000,000 a month they are going to need cards.

With 180,000 Daily players on average, if even a tenth 18,000 accounts spend near my average on rentals to hit diamond $7-$9 per season the rental market would potentially generate $162,000 in revenue per season.

That's just an educated guess.

One would assume that those renting are being taken advantage of, yes & no, with me personally rentals pay for themselves.

You can easily loose money if you cant play Splinterlands daily, apparently there are on average 180,000 of us who can.

So rent us diehards the tools of the trade Splinterlands cards, we earn rewards paying for the rental that's a win, win.

As apposed to most of the Blockchain gaming industry Splinterlands appears to be weathering the Market Crash.

Take it from me I have played hundreds of Blockchain games, this recent market crash was a tough test as the NFT market bubble burst.

Causing many early investors to sour on the concept of NFTs, despite that hurdle many games hang in there, but not many maintain 180,000 players a day.

Splinterlands has healthy trade despite prices falling as I have shown Rentals have risen in price.

These numbers are to be applauded in this market, no where near what it once was, but it has been worse.

Judge not by asset prices that's subjective & changes with the whims of the market, judge by the player activity / trade volume.

My belief is its never been a better time to rent out Splinterlands cards.

Facilitate the market

Another either passive or active earning mechanism with Splinterlands is facilitating Splinterlands market usage.

By this I mean either provide Splinterlands crypto liquidity, this is the passive option.

DEC or SPS based pairings on various Blockchains

Routed threw a rewards claiming mechanism in game on the SPS menus.

Now a more active approach is supplying WAX NFT markets slow yes but lucrative for those with patience.

On a related note when flipping NFTs on WAX I use Nefty Blocks as you generate NEFTY a WAX alt doing so.

Blockchain markets represent a collaborative effort you dont have to enjoy playing to reap benefits from P2E games like Splinterlands.

Patience Is a virtue

Patience other then being a virtue & a so so striper name, is also a sound investment strategy.

My best investment hands down where land plots & Dice Packs from Splinterlands. Buying them from the store at sticker price waiting for supplies to dwindle & demand to naturally rise.

DICE packs are sold out, so why bother telling you this?

The more things change the more they stay the same, right now you can buy RIFT Packs.

They are this years version of DICE packs meaning they are rare by comparison.

With a Max supply of 3,000,000 While it may take a few months supplies will run out. Not only does the value appreciate but the odds do as well.

How does something have odds appreciate?

A few ways a tontine though illegal, has odds that appreciate over time.

Specifically Splinterlands pack odds appreciate over time due to the airdropped cards changing the profit probability when opened.

Meaning that a RIFT pack opened today is actually less valuable then that same rift pack once all 5 cards airdrop.

Once a card gets airdropped with that pack set it is then potentially in any pack unopened of that type regardless of where it is. Meaning the packs in a wallet for instance once the card airdrops for them has the potential to contain 1 of the airdropped cards just added even when bought months before.

Chaos legion packs for instance have added 9 legendary cards to their packs increasing the odds of getting a legendary card in a pack.

These odds have noticeably shifted to the realm of profiting of the results when opened with 5 of each potion.

I Dont even bother opening packs without potions, its a waste.

Just understand P2E game markets are fairly predictable cause = effect it may take a while but enough time considering there are 180,000 daily players the RIFT packs will run out as will Chaos legion packs.

Bide your time HODL packs or rent out cards, if your not someone whom likes playing, that's great its easier to sit on these assets.

Just look at the rich list on Peak Monsters.

Keep in mind some of these belong to HIVE Dapps like monster.cards for instance. However there are quite a few RIFT & CHAOS packs in private wallets I suspect this is due to how the prices are relatively predictable.

Lets just assume for a moment you like the idea of investing in Splinterlands but everything I have covered is a small fry, not fit for a whale.

First Blush / what are you doing here reading this?

Assuming that your still with me if you want to understand why a validator node is so important / the validator node licenses are so expensive. Total cost: 71,837.429 SPS ($5,000 USD)

A Validator node license for Splinterlands entitles the owner to run a program validating SPS voting / delegation. Full description 👇

Not as taxing computationally speaking as running a traditional Node, only requiring knowledge of the current state of that blockchain as appose to compiling all of the the Blockchains historical information.

Dont misunderstand its not easy unless you understand how the system functions so I advise only those whom grasp the specifics try this.

I actually was keeping tabs with a project called RFOX which while originally based on ETH & BSC was integrating with WAX for their project on the WAX blockchain KOGs.

These Validator Node setups can be difficult, KOGs issue was pairing the crypto earned in game RFOX with a WAX NFT market in game.

They eventually got there via pairing BSSC & WAX through a game account getting Validator nodes to track RFOX game earnings playing KOGs while the spent RFOX in game was a WAX alt on a in game WAX NFT market.

The player account balance however worked for the whole Rfox ID & Rfox ecosystem which was on BSC.

Since the colection KOGs & their game Kogs slam where both on WAX but they handled the rest of the ecosystem on BSC / ETH.

Validator nodes became a crucial part to getting Kogs Slam game monetized, I was helping bug test during the private alpha testing so I got to see first hand the struggle of getting this to run correctly.

Kogs messed up as there Metaverse the Rfox ecosystem was to broad of an ambition baby steps they hadn't even gotten the first game online they where talking metaverse.

What the hell am I even rambling about?

Not much the TLDR I have seen systems similar to the validator node licenses of Splinterlands implemented a few times RFOX & KOGs did it wrong.

Splinterlands is keeping it realistic while incentivizing those running validator nodes adequately, focusing on SPS game governance.

Rfox is an example of what not to do

In addition to Rfox / KOGs I believe both Upland & Alien Worlds have similar validator node setups for planetary governance with TLM on Alien Worlds (WAX BSC).

Upland has something with Spark / building modifications like NFT stores. Though upland is the game I'm least familiar with.

What's the point of boring you to death with this?

Like everything I have covered today it all comes back to game popularity any DPoS project can try & set up validator nodes for governance or similar systems.

This doesn't mean you should shell out $5,000 just to run just any Validator node, Splinterlands & game with similar popularity you may want to consider it.

Opening packs Blending cards

Now this is a little more active then passive, but by far Splinterlands most profitable mechanisms are opening packs & blending cards.

Chaos legion or CHAOS packs now sell on P2P markets for roughly $2.

However they also sell in game for 4,000 DEC which at time of writing...

As I stated earlier in the write up the odds of Chaos legion packs have improved drastically since launch.

Having added 9 more Legendary cards to the packs potential contents.

For this reason though their price is lower they are batter to open now then at launch.

When you have cards of the same iteration you have a few choices rent them out, Hodl them, sell them, burn them, or blend them.

Splinterlands tutorials really are just fantastic I cant state it better so here are a few screen grabs.

Ok now the combined cards improve their power that they provide the player & upgrade the cards level when you combine enough.

You do a few things by blending these cards you lower their current market supply & increase their utility value.

Note how a card that rents for 0.10 DEC a day at level 1 can be rented for around 14 DEC a day at level 10.

Opening NFT packs is not the same thing as gambling, though there are some similarities, they differ if the project the NFTs are connected to is consistently popular.

Given Splinterlands is one of the most popular blockchain games in the world with an average monthly player count of 180,000, while not risk free its safer then investing in most NFT projects.

Through a combination of waiting on the packs airdropped cards to be added & using potions you noticeably minimize risks.

No pack is a definitive loss as long as there is a market for the cards, since its subjective we are talking consumer demand rather then a traditional ROI.

This is why I stress keeping informed on the health of a project & its fandom, as we in the end determine the value of these assets.
