Social Media Challenge : Strong Monsters Don't Guarantee You Will Win
Hi everyone, welcome back to my weekly Splinterlands Social Media Challenge. This time I am not sharing nor discussing about any specific monster, but I am sharing one my amazing battle on Gold league here...
BATTLE OF YODIN ON GOLD LEAGUE
It's started when I got the rulesets above... 99 mana, Stampede (The Trample ability can trigger multiple times per attack if the trampled Monster is killed) and Equalizer (The initial Health of all Monsters is equal to that of the Monster on either team with the highest base Health)
Because I only had 2 options, Fire or Death, I went with Fire regarding I had Yodin Zaku in my team. As I guessed, my opponent was extraordinary strong due to that 99 Mana cap. This was the battle I got.
Honestly I saw no chance of me to win, everything starting from front to back, I lost all. Let's compared our line up:
The Tank
His Tank, Level 6 Exploding Dwarf | My Tank, Free Level 1 Living Lava |
Living lava was a great tank, however Lvl 1 Living Lava was nothing against this Lvl 6 Dwarf. With Equalizer ruleset, The Dwarft got 10 Health point + Retaliate Ability... In term of Speed, Damage and Ability, My Living Lava had no chance at all.
The Second
His Second, lvl 5 Fineas Rage | My 2nd, Lvl 2 Molten Ash Golem |
His Fineas rage had 5 speed, my Golem had 1 speed... no chance of winning. in term of damage, he had 3 melee damage, my golem had 2 (one from Yodin) range damage. I picked Molten Ash Golem for the second because Golem had Close Range ability, so when Living Lava died, Golem could replace it as the tank.
By everything, my Golem had no chance at all too
The Third
His Third, lvl 5 Sand Worm | My 3rd, Lvl 2 Gargoya Devil |
I took Gargoya Lion as the second range unit with Close Range ability, so if my 2nd monster (Golem) died, I could rely on Gargoya Devil as the next tank. He put Sand worm on third due to same reason, need the 3rd tank incase the first two got killed.
Sand Worm had 6 melee damage and 3 speed. Gargoya Devil had 3 (one from Yodin) range damage and 3 speed. In term of damage dealing, Gargoya Devil couldn't win.
The Fourth
His Fourth, lvl 4 Fire Demon | My 4th, Lvl 2 Lava Launcher |
This position was the only one that my monster could stand toe to toe with his monster. I believed Lava Launcher level 2 was stronger than his level 4 Fire Demon, due to armors.
The Fifth
His Fifth, lvl 5 Fire Elemental | My 5th, Lvl 2 Scavo Firebolt |
Again, my monster in this postion lost both by damage and by speed. Scavo Firebolt couldn't get any chance to win
The Last
lvl 5 Elemental Phoenix | Lvl 2 Molten Ash Golem |
This was the funny thing, in normal ruleset the different between Elemental Phoenix and Spark Pixies was very very hugh... however in this ruleset, I dared to say both of them were equal. Same speed and same damage (thanks to Yodin +1 range damage).
It looked like both of us used flying monster on the last to avoid Sneak Attackers.
HERE COMES THE BATTLE!!!

Round 1
- The game started as both party buffing and debuffing their monsters and opponent's monsters.
- My team had a total 15 range damage and 3 melee damage. combined total of 18 damage.
- His team had a total 13 melee damage, 8 range damage and 3 magic damage. combined total of 24 damage. This was ridiculous hugh amount of damage. Plus there were blast abilities on each monsters.
At this point I just couldn't see how I could win this battle by stats.
- However things ran not as bad as I thought. I killed his Exploding Dwarf and Fineas Rage First.
Round 2
- This round I lost my Living Lava and Molten Ash Golem from their Phoenix first attack
- My Scavo Firebolt killed his sandworm, now things somehow turned ugly for his team
Round 3
- I lost my Gargoya first in this round, however my team managed to kill their Fire Demon and Fire Elemental
- 1 vs 3, good game... I won this battle
BATTLE DISCUSSION
First I would like to thank to Brucutu for this battle. He was a great opponent, I believed if we had 10 battles I might only win 2-3 times. However I was lucky my formation was better than him that time so it ended up as I was the winner.
How Strong Was The Opponent?
Ok Let's speak by number:
Level 6 Dwarf price is about $35
Level 5 Fineas Rage is about $79
Level 5 Sand Worm is about $52
Level 4 Fire Demon is about $91
Level 5 Fire Elemental is about $53
Level 3 Phoenix is about $319
I use PeakMonsters to determinte those price. PeakMonster has been the most realiable 3rd party website to support Splinterlands players in cards transactions and information.
Combined all, my opponent brought $630 monsters and I only used less than $3 monsters. That's amazing, isn't it? Those monsters are more expensive than my whole set of cards. You can make a new full silver 1 account with that $630.
I don't want to count my Yodin and his Yodin because we all know Yodin is ridiculously expensive.
Why $630 Monsters lost to $3 Monsters?
The main reason I won that battle was not because I was smart ass or my opponent was clumsy. The reason was simple, because Splinterlands is a fair game.
Whether you are a Whale, or a Krill, old player or beginner, you have a fair chance to win your battles. Buying more NFT, build up your monster, indeed making you strong in battle. However there isn't any guarantee that you will keep winning against weaker and smaller opponents.
RNG and battle rulesets are the most crucial in making everything fair. If those annoy you, bear in mind that those annoy your opponents too. If you think the rulesets help you, it means the rulesets help your opponent too.
That's why I like this game, it gives fair opportunity to everyone.
What were the key winning points in that battle?
There were a couple of decisive point in that battle which make my opponent lost
- Armor and Shield Ability. When we have Equalizer, every monsters will get same health points. The difference lays on Armors and Defensive Ability. My Living Lava had a shield ability, none of my opponent monsters had it. 3 of my monsters had armors, none of their monsters had it. This was the most decisive point in that battle.
- Second reason is the line up. We need strong monsters to set up a strong team, however getting the strongest monsters doesn't mean making the strongest team. Sometime we need weak and cheap monsters to make our team work better. In this case, I used Gargoya Devil and It worked excellent alot better than opponent expensive monsters due to it's armor. If my opponent used Djinn Inferni replacing his mighty Fire Demon, I would had lost that battle.

Looks like they didn't evade a single attack, despite many of their monsters being faster. Reminds me of my luck! 😅
