Based on the current card choices, I consider Obsidian as the second best summoner released in the Chaos Legion Edition having Tarsa as the first. The increased magic damage for Earth elements are a good buff to that element as they now have more aggressive choices than the previous one that provides either increased health for your team or decreased armor for the opponent team. Since Obsidian directly buffs your team, there's no bad choices on when she could be run. Also, it buffs a lot of cards that are pretty weak before like Wood Nymph or Centauri Mage which is a huge plus for old players.

Lore

The fearsome woman now known as Obsidian grew up in the remote village of Stonebluff as the last remaining Earth mage. Each year, Earth elementalists went off to compete in the contest, leaving Obsidian to train the next generation of warriors. She wished to join the contest of champions, but the village elders advised her against it, saying she needed to stay behind and focus on training others to use Earth magic.
She grew resentful of the way she was treated, knowing she was better than previous mages before her. So, she planned her revenge. In a mine near the village, she taught classes on Earth magic and gained the trust of her students. Her teachings were strenuous and those who could not follow techniques were punished, forced to magically hold obsidian above their heads until it fell on them. She eventually learned to use obsidian to enhance the powers of others. And there was one apprentice she took under her wing. Someone who carried equal anger in his heart. She amplified his abilities in combat practice against other students, making him stronger and more ferocious than his opponents.
The village sat at the bottom of a cliff in the Tower Mountains where frequent rock slides occurred. Not a problem for mages gifted in Earth magic, but Obsidian and her apprentice no longer cared for the village. She saw it as an opportunity to leave behind her old life and find a challenge worthy of her power.
She sent her apprentice to cause a massive rock avalanche. Standing at a distance, she used her power to amplify his own. Her other students rushed to stop it, but they were not up to the task. Not against such raw power. The rocks and debris fell, covering her home, leaving it a ruined field of boulders and dust. She and her apprentice were the only survivors. Word spread of the disaster in the mountains and only whispers remained of Stonebluff.
Obsidian walked away with her head held high knowing she had proven them all wrong. She and her apprentice vanished across the sea and made their way from town to town. They heard of the terror of the Chaos Legion and followed their wake of destruction until they caught the attention of Silas of the Rift. To show off their power, she amplified her apprentice's magic to control and torture Silas' enemies. Silas made Obsidian a close advisor, a tool used to gain information through cruelty.

Obsidian stood calmly several yards back, watching her young apprentice. His robes rustled in the wind as he held his hands up high, struggling to bring down the rocks on the village below.
Obsidian's hands weaved through the air, and she stretched out with her mind. As her energy and her apprentice's connected, she amplified his powers.
He shouted out at the surge of energy coursing through him. The mountains shook, the very ground rumbling beneath their feet. And then the rocks began to fall.

Should I Buy or Rent?

This is the price of the card as of this writing.

Obsidian is probably one of the strongest summoner right now in Splinterlands second to Tarsa. The compatibility with Obsidian and the new Chaos Legion cards and even the old ones. Due to these good combinations, the price of the Obsidian summoner is high but not at its peak. If you like using Earth monsters using magic damage, getting higher leveled Obsidian would be a good investment for the future.

This is the rental price of the card as of this writing.

Due to Obsidian being free to use, no one is currently renting low leveled Obsidian but it may be a good temporary solution if you're in higher leagues. In higher leagues like Silver 2 and Silver 1, you will be at a huge disadvantage if you're only using level 1 cards. It's not unwinnable per se but will be in a huge disadvantage and renting higher level summoner allows you to play higher level monsters as well.

Card Stats and Abilities

Obsidian is a rare summoner which is the most common rarity of summoners. Believe me or not, there are more rare summoners than common summoners. That's why I consider this the most common rarity for summoners. As a rare summoner, combining 5 of the same cards unlocks level 2 which allows you to play level 3 commons, level 2 rares, level 2 epics and level 1 legendaries. This is the maximum standard for Bronze league. The one in level 3 rares is then the maximum standard for Silver League. Make sure you have the appropriate summoner levels and league rank before getting high level monsters via purchasing or renting to use the levels you desire.

Battle Review

With this battle, I decided to go with Venari Knifer as my main defense, protected by Goblin Psychic. Khmer Princess provides additional damage while Mycelic Morphoid goes towards the back as I've seen some cards that can attack the back line.

Round 1

round 1 end.jpg

Round 1 was pretty chill while Round 2 was a disaster with my Venari Knifer dying on turn 4 exposing my back line.

Round 2

round 2 end.jpg

Fortunately, I got back and killed Unicorn Mustang on turn 7 of the same round.

Round 3

round 3 end.jpg

Since my opponent only has minimal damage, I was able to mitigate the deaths with Goblin Psychic's heals to himself while inflicting damage to opponent.
I was able to eliminate Mycelic Morphoid and Khmer Princess on opponent's side with each attacks from my Goblin Psychic and Khmer Princess's damage which is boosted by Obsidian.

Round 4

round 4 end.jpg

I totally controlled the 4th round with the heals from Goblin Psychic as my team slowly munch away health from Regal Peryton.

Round 5

round 5 end.jpg

I got the win by the end of Round 4 when Regal Peryton dies from that battle
