I really liked this book and the author! Her books always have this sly undercurrent of humor and it doesn’t disappoint. This is a mishmash of so many fairy tale tropes, but still felt new.There are some things that I would wish to get answers to though. Like the saint?? Why was she in the catacombes? Was she the Lady of Grackle? cuz I don't think so. I also wanted to learn more about the Sister Apothecary, since she was the one who helped Marra the most in the beginning! The pacing was a bit slow and the showdown at the end was done very quickly (I mean, with Fenris being this skilled) But far and away I also loved these characters! The characters had depth and backstory and worked so well together, each with their own quirks and personalities. Add in our little friend, Bonedog, and a small blooming romance, and you've got yourself a pretty damn good book. Fenris & Marra were kinda archetypal but their uncertain romance was sweet. The dust-wife was probably my favorite tho! And Agnes was probably the most compelling of all - a wicked godmother with a kind heart. I’d love another book just about her and her whole backstory. She and Agnes are so funny together, like some bickering grandmas with chickens. Speaking of chickens, I really wanted to know what kind of demon is inside that chicken. can it transform??? but the dust wife actually using the chicken to fight the old king was hilarious. All in all, I really enjoyed this book! I love Kingifisher's writing style and I am so looking forward to read more from her!
