Talked-About New Focus Missions Could Have More Complex Ramifications Than We Anticipate

avatar

We are now getting close to the half of the second season since the ranked rewards were revamped.

From what Matt and other team members have said during the past two town halls, we are looking at two almost certain changes regarding the new system:

  • the starting league or the type of chests you play for during the season to match this evolution
  • the focus missions

We don't know what solution will be implemented in either case, but I want to talk more about the focus missions.

During or at the end of last season, those who kept tracking realized one can earn more chests on the focus missions than on the season rewards.

The main reason for that is they reset every day, unlike the season rewards points, which keep getting harder and harder to get.

So, nowadays, you can rarely see anyone playing something else except the focus missions. That seems a no-brainer. Win and get points for 2 chests instead of one.

That would be true, except... how is your win rate lately? I must say that mine dropped significantly since the beginning of the season playing like that. And I started to win the majority of my games when I began to play varying my splinters today.

I still haven't got my newest favorite splinter as a focus mission, that's true, or I would have probably won a lot during those 24h using just that splinter.

So, personally, I am glad the focus missions will get a revamp.

But, and there's a BIG but, if the new focus missions won't be based on splinters, which I really loved at first impression, there is something else to take into consideration.

As the pre-battle info screen is designed right now in-game,

image.png

you can learn a lot about the opponent's splinter battle history, and, if you go deep and you really know the game, you can have some tips about what teams he plays often.

But that's a lot to process in a few seconds before you click Create Team.

The focus of this screen is on the history of splinters the opponent played, and not on other details.

If the focus missions change radically, let's say, to the use of a certain ability, this screen is not very helpful.

For someone who only uses the game interface, that will be a pretty significant loss, even compared to the situation today.

That's because they would have more difficulties identifying the type of team the opponent will play at a quick glance. Normally, I'd love this uncertainty! But if that would be for everyone.

And today there are interfaces giving you analysis of your opponent's play history, and your chances to beat him with your selected team, in real-time, after the match started.

If the opponent will know your focus mission in the future and you can't identify his easily without using 3rd party apps, that may not be so great.

So, the question is, should the in-game interface provide such information for everyone, in light of the expected changes to focus missions, or do we need to use paid 3rd party apps going forward to stay competitive?

This may have already been taken into consideration by the team. I hope they did, and if not, I hope they do now.

Out of curiosity, how have you been doing this season with the focus missions? Was it just me that did worse than the season before so far?

Playing in the silver league, consistent 14 focus chests per day 😎

One good day followed by an extremely bad day.

At least you had a good day. Mine were all below average for the focus mission. Except for the first two compared to last season, but last season I started in gold and now I started in diamond. For diamond, they are below average.

What I find is getting back to champion is the hardest, once there for some reason it gets easier.

Same experience last season to go from gold back to diamond.

I think things will ease up once all the whales move back up to where they should be.

By some of the usernames of the opponents I've played against, it's either that more guild players started to rank up or the bot farms reactivated at higher leagues. I noticed at least one bot farm that gave up... so far and started upvoting with 0.000 upvotes.

It took an extra day to max Silver 1 this season vs last season 4 vs 5 days. I am at a 60% win rate vs 64% last season at this point.
The first days of the season are really about maxing your league. Then once you have it maxed you can focus more on trying to make the splinter a win. Occasionally switching splinters when the ruleset is against your splinter.
I am happy with my 9 or 10 daily chest in Silver. Slowly adding to Collection Power to have to decide if moving to Gold 3 would be worth it.

Yeah, I think it's about time that I move up to Champion soon. I got bored by Diamond already.

Not sure what is a good number of chests in silver. I just had a comment about 14 chests/day in silver. But it depends on how you play, for ranking up or for focus chests. And your luck with the splinter for the focus mission.

If you have a silver or higher deck you can get the 18-20 wins to get 14 chest/day. My Bronze deck can get my 10 wins in Focus for 9 chest. Some days I will get 12 chest but that takes 15 wins in Focus. My math is also using cap +20% gold bonus. If you are all gold cards then shift the numbers up 20-30%.

Ah, that explains it. You are playing in Silver with a bronze deck.

Overall, the earning from the chests for the new 1st season is higher than the old system. This is mainly due to higher multiplier for the dec. I really focus on playing the daily focus. And it really force me to rent the best cards so as to bump up the win rate. There are a lot of days when I got death and life, I already mentally prepared to lose more than 50%. So I am actually getting lesser chests but I just have to believe in the quality of the chests right?

Yeah, definitely the earnings in the new system are better than in the old system. But a little tweak here and there will improve things.

Sorry you are having all bad days. Maybe you need to sit in a different chair or something to change your luck. Thanks for sharing.

Nah, things will change. I'm not worried about that.

I quit playing SL months ago, I think it needs too much of your time to be able to play at a competitive level but I do remember cashing out some SPS at somewhere 2.5-3x gains :) ohh, the good times...

I often wonder about that. But if I ever decide to stop playing at all, I'll most likely rent out everything instead of selling. It still needs a little bit of tweaking, but not as much as playing in most cases.

Being a Bronze to Silver (more casual) player, I have never been a consistent winner, so I haven't seen that much difference as I have played under the new system. Hopefully, as my collection continues to grow this will become more of a problem for me. 😁

While my win % has probably not changed that much, my number of chests has increased significantly, but this is due to the daily limit (Daily Quests) being lifted and me spending more time playing the game.

There wasn't really a limit before the new system, other than your ECR. You just didn't win more quest rewards, but you could have won DEC + improve your rank.

But otherwise, by almost all parameters it's better the new system. Where it lacks is that you spend more time playing the game, even when you don't want to, lol.

I have been doing disastrously with all missions so far. The win rate is in the toilet!!!

What I started doing is that if the focus mission lowers my win rate I start varying. I don't earn focus chests, but at least I rise in ranking, and when I have a favorable focus win streak, I'll win big time. Today I messed that up at the end because I wanted one more focus chest. And I lost MANY battles to get that one win I needed.
