BATTLE MAGE SECRETS Weekly Challenge! - Keep Your Distance Ruleset

Hi Guys! In this post we are exploring on another Splinterlands ruleset. The ruleset we are focusing on is Keep Your Distance.

Keep Your Distance

In a Keep Your Distance ruleset, Units with melee attacks may not be used. This means only units with no attack or ranged and melee attack may be deployed.

Lets take a look at a Wild Silver ranked match with Keep Your Distance as one of the ruleset. The battle restrictions are:
Equalizer and Keep Your Distance with a max mana of just 18. Only Earth, Life and Death splinters are allowed in this battle. The Video for the Full Battle can be seen here:

TEAM SETUP:

SplinterMana CostPositionReason
Obsidian4SummonerWas contemplating between using Thaddius Brood or Obsidian. Ended up chosing Obsidian as I felt that healing is better than Life Leech in this setup. I am not expecting too much opponent firepower as it is hard to come out with a decent firepower with only 18 total mana.
Chaos Agent11stChaos Agent has Dodge ability and have a 25% chance to dodge ranged and melee attack. Would be a decent tank in a Equalizer ruleset match.
Creeping Ooze12ndCreeping Ooze will slow down the opposing lineup by 1 Speed. This would make my Chaos Agent even harder to hit.
Mushroom Seer53rdI added Mushroom Seer here in case the opponent went with a Magic lineup instead. Its Silence ability will reduce all enemy units' magic attack by 1 if the unit attack are above 1.
Wood Nymph44thMy healing unit for whichever unit is tanking in front.
Earth Elemental35thEarth Elemental has a very decent ranged attack of 2 and also can heal itself. I am not really expecting it to be hit though since my opponent cannot deploy Sneak melee units in this ruleset. On hindsight, Spirit Hoarder might have been a better option here.
Total Mana:18

Opponent Lineup:

My opponent went with a Earth splinter lineup as well but not with Obsidian but a level 4 Lyanna Natura as the summoner. Lyanna Natura will give all my opponent units +1 health. My opponent also deployed Goblin Sorcerer, a unit that can Sneak attack using magic attack. It is not commonly use so that was a surprise to me. But because I have Earth Elemental at the back, Goblin Sorcerer would be rendered ineffective in this match.

End of Round 1:

It might looked like a closely matched battle at the end of round 1 but it is not. As you can see the total offensive power of my opponent is 3 magic damage while I have a total of 2 ranged and 3 magic damage. Even though my Mushroom Seer is only level 1, its Silence ability effectively disabled the offensive power of my opponent. Granted my opponent also used Mushroom Seer (and a level 4 one!), but my lineup wasn't entire just based on magic.

End of Round 2:

The other major problem with my opponent setup was splitting the attack into 2 area instead of focusing on one spot. Its usually okay to split attack but not when your offensive power is weak in the first place. You can see not only did the opponent Goblin Sorcerer not hurt my Earth Elemental much but my Earth Elemental can easily healed itself back to full health again.

The opponent next tank looked like a problem though. Failed Summoner's Magic Reflect is going to cause problem for my magic units.

End of Round 3:

Although the opponent Failed Summoner was reflecting magic damage back to my magic units, the reflected damage was too small to cause much problem. Again my Earth Elemental was dealing too much damage on the opponent tank for my opponent to heal.

End of Round 4:

With the opponent's Failed Summoner falling and me still having my entire lineup alive, it was game over for my opponent. My opponent just don't have the firepower to break through my lineup.

End of Round 9:

It took a while but I ended the battle without losing a single unit.

KEY STRATEGY
My strategy for to use healing to survive to win the battle. And since I know that only Ranged and Magic units can be deployed, I used a unit with Silence to reduce enemy magic firepower so I can outlast my opponent. If my opponent went with a Ranged lineup though I would be in trouble.

SUMMARY
In a Keep Your Distance battle, you know your opponent can only deployed Ranged or Magic units. It is thus important to guard against Ranged or Magic attack. This can be done via summoner/unit with Silence or Headwinds. Silence will reduce magic attack by 1 while Headwinds will reduce ranged attack by 1.
