Mirror Strategy

It's not common for my opponents to adopt precisely the same tactics as I do. However, this thorny path (also known as the Briar Patch ruleset) led us both to the same conclusion: The other would rely on the Green Splinter magic set with Obsidian in charge of the pack. So, we devised one of the few strategies to defeat such a setup – buffing Captain Katie with a Martyr and having her take down one enemy after another. How did the clash between two armies of similar monsters unfold? Keep reading to find out!

Let's start by taking a look at my lineup. Opting for a gladiator card, I had no other choice but Franz Ruffmane. With the extra armor point he provides, he's an excellent summoner when supporting Bloodlust monsters.

Then there's a stack of HP to keep my opponent's monsters as far from my sniper as possible. With Chaos Agent in the lead, I anticipated my tank would block only one magic strike and then fall. Surprisingly, the agent managed to survive the entire battle.

Gargoya Scrapper is a cheap card, especially effective against a magic-dependent set. In gold foil (or at higher levels), this monster gains Void. Thanks to the extra armor point, I hoped it might endure for a while.

Strategically placing Pelacor Conjurer to block sniping attacks turned out to be a game-changer. Although it was just another cannon fodder monster to absorb magic attacks, its positioning was crucial.

Next up is Venari Marksrat, serving as the bodyguard for my key card. Like any other Martyr, this monster is simply there to fall and buff adjacent monsters.

As mentioned earlier, Captain Katie was the linchpin in my strategy. Given enough time to shoot down a few foes, she transforms into a killing machine with incredible stats. Plus, she ignores Thorns, which makes this ruleset ideal for her.

The Battle

Two armies arrived with the same strategy: no melee monsters (except for my Gargoya Scrapper in the second position) to avoid vulnerability to Thorns. However, I managed to maximize HP for the four mana points left after selecting the summoner, Venari Marksrat, and Captain Katie. Strategically placing them gave my opponent's Katie no chance to slay anyone during the first round, while mine did. It was a decisive advantage, given that any round without a kill was a lost opportunity for any Bloodlust monster. My Katie had ample time to buff herself and snipe my opponent's before any harm could be done. With no other offensive cards in my opponent's deck, I emerged victorious.
