Wearing a Crown of Thorns

It was such a coincidence to have a thorn-themed challenge for Easter! I feel like an apostle of #Splinterlands, which is the most promising game based on Hive, at least to me. My battle took place on Good Friday, and it ended up going well. That's why I'd like to share a bit of my strategy with you. The ruleset was quite rare, with a mix of three rules that don't go well together, which made me come up with an unusual set of cards.

  • Melee Mayhem gave all my melee monsters the ability to attack from any position.
  • On the other hand, Briar Patch made melee monsters useless, or a suicide squad if you will.
  • Little League capped the maximum mana cost of monsters and summoners to 4.

Here's the link to the battle.

Kelya Frendul is one of the best summoners to lead a Little League deck through briars. She speeds them up and grants an extra armor point, giving the melee monsters among them at least a small chance to survive.

Chaos Agent is often underestimated, but once it gains its Dodge ability, it can protect the rear of your pack for several rounds. However, I used it as a tank this time, hoping it would dodge some of the ranged attacks and deal a bit of thorny damage to my opponent's tank. Unfortunately, my agent didn't survive even the first round, but it still served its purpose well.

Venari Marksrat is a nasty card that is almost useless on its own, but it can grant one or two other cards extra stats. I play this card in most of my games. As usual, it was meant to sacrifice itself for others (oh, an Easter reference again!).

The sacrifice was to benefit of Xenith Monk, one of the few melee monsters that could be reasonably used in such a game. With +1 stats and Heal ability, it could survive for a while even if it takes 2 Thorns damage every time it hits an enemy. Unfortunately, my Xenith Monk didn't last as long as I expected this time, but it gave me enough time to eliminate my opponent's Musa Saline, a pretty nasty card.

Speaking of nasty cards, Coral Wraith shouldn't be left aside. It's a magic backstabber with 2 damage, which is really powerful in the Little League. Nothing can resist it. Plus, unlike ranged monsters, Coral Wraith can attack in the first position, which turned out to be a winning factor for me in this battle.

Kulu Swimhunter and Grenadier were powerful damage dealers who, when hidden behind other cards, could eventually survive. In this case, it wasn't just about luck; it was also due to my strategy and card placement.
