Three bullets and a life

This story was not told to me, I lived it first hand. At that time when the streets were made of sand and it was dusty when I arrived home. Some would be surprised, but it is something typical of the third world: It is as common as the sale of oil bags or water pipes to wash clothes.

I can't forget those sandy roads, which I walked with him. Román lived at the end of the neighborhood, almost where the sun rises. Who would have thought that in such a humble house, of raw bricks and a tin roof, would house such a wonderful human being. I never knew he was a friend until I met him; it was at one of those parties where they drank aguardiente until dawn and prepared bone soup for the hangover.

There we exchanged glances and he smiled at me. I thought he was going to flirt with me (indeed he did, although he denies it) but we ended up talking for hours and hours in a friendly way. From then on we were inseparable.

On one of those hangover mornings from the weekend party, Patricio showed up on his new motorcycle. Since he became a policeman he behaved like a complete jerk. Roman had a lot of patience for him because he was happy for him. They had known each other since they were kids and he knew he had never had anything. When you grow up on a tin ranch with 3 other brothers you have to figure out how to get by.

It was the furthest he had been able to go on his own and being a policeman was a considerable improvement, if you take into account the fact that none of his siblings progressed; they barely finished elementary school.

So they opted for blue-collar jobs to make a living. Patricio was the exception; finishing his studies at the point of heavy labor in a construction site a few kilometers from where he lived. When he graduated from the police academy, his family was proud of him. He was the first to graduate from more than just high school.

He walked through the door that day, he was so proud. I just looked at him out of the corner of my eye and said nothing, to avoid conflict. I didn't hate him, but he and I never hit it off. I was going to college and studying engineering. He settled for being a policeman. He thought he would make a quick buck that way. It is not in me to keep quiet about such issues. Corruption should not be tolerated. That is why we lived in constant verbal warfare because I did not tolerate his wrongdoings. I knew that sooner or later something would go wrong.

Apart from bragging about his new acquisition, he invited us to a party to be held at a nearby club for the coming weekend. There he assured Román that he would get him a job, as he was in a hurry with some debts he had pending.

I objected of course; it was not a good idea to accept a job from him and I did not want to go to another party. But Román begged me and I agreed. I knew he was desperate, and I wasn't going to leave him alone.

The day arrived and I showed up at Román's house ready. I just had to wait for Patricio, who soon arrived. I meanwhile felt a lump in my throat because I had a bad feeling. I told Román about it and he told me to relax because it was just a prejudice I had, but that didn't calm me down.

Party

The party was in full swing when we arrived. There was alcohol everywhere and cigarette smoke was choking. It was a sprawling place with a pool and green areas and we headed towards the latter to talk to Patricio's friend. He would be no less than 50 years old but he was trying hard to look younger. He did not inspire absolute confidence in me.

I let them talk to each other and moved away to a clearer area. I felt much better and started dancing to the music. Half an hour had passed when I heard a commotion, followed by a couple of shots and laughter. It was Patricio firing shots in the air in celebration.
I thought he was an irresponsible idiot and turned to give him his reprimand.

I hadn't gotten to where they were when I heard a third shot followed by screams of fear. I don't know why but I knew. So I ran as fast as I could and saw him: it was Román lying on the ground with a shot in his chest. I flew to his side and with my hands, I tried to stop the blood. I squeezed his chest as hard as I could while screaming hysterically for help.

Many tried to come closer but I prevented them from doing so, I thought they wanted to separate me from him. It wasn't until the medical staff arrived that I reacted.

They did what they could, but it was too late? Roman died that morning next to me.

Two years have passed and I am in my room with my injector at hand. They try to make me get over it, but I can't, I still see his face and the smile with which he said goodbye to me. If I die I wouldn't care, because I know he is waiting for me on the other side and I will accompany him to torment Patrick, as he claims he does every night.

Allí cruzamos miradas y me sonrió.

No me inspiraba absoluta confianza.

Román murió aquella madrugada junto a mí.
