“Mhm,” I said, and gave her a soft punch in the shoulder. Despite the exhaustion, I felt much better than I had back at home, wrapped in a blanket, cowering on the couch. I had met Willy (or whatever was in Willy) face to face and it didn’t murder me. There were others that knew what was up and maybe even a plan, if Deluxe had put something together.

Instead of answering, he closed his book and came toward our table. He wasn’t wearing the usual expression of a boy who was keen to meet some new girls; he seemed quite concerned, or almost pained, as if the wifi had also eluded him for many grueling minutes and he needed to talk to someone about it.

Happy new year my friend, we all were busy doing holiday chores and now at least back to Hive with refreshed minds.

Here is my entry for this lovely giveaway.

I picked up a plate, plucked a length of snake skin off the shoulder of Deluxe’s bright pink housecoat, and leaned against the counter. The boys sat at our little kitchen table, nursing coffees, looking unshowered and unshaved. Their eyes were bloodshot, their shoulders shrunken.

What a perfect description of people doing breakfast after having a half-slept night.

Willy leaned against a lamppost, on the opposite side of the road, a block away. He bathed in the halo of light like a modern day romeo. Same clothes. No book. He stared straight ahead, wore a look of utter concentration, pointer fingers and thumbs pressed together in a diamond shape. I wanted to turn back to the door of the bar, but I found I couldn’t move.

My line favorite:

I did, and flinched. I was proud that I didn’t yelp. On the horizon behind me, rising an impossible hundred storeys or so above the town, was the clock. It was a great, magnificent tower, black and regal against the bone-white sky. The time stood still at two to midnight, and the numbers here were all facing the right way.
