Splinterlands: Does "Modern" Spell Doom for Older Generation Cards?

1000321402.png

Older generation cards are becoming less desirable on splinterlands, as their utility and value are dwindling due to the changes and prerequisites associated with newer generation cards. This calls card longevity into question on Spatterlands. The OGs, who owned terrifying legendary cards, can no longer claim exclusivity. This is because they need to sell these cards in order to compete in formats that earn them better rewards.

Newer System Damns Card Exclusivity

There is no need for card exclusivity; if fewer people in the market demand them, they lose monetary value over time because no one wants them again. Players go where the money is, and in today's investing world, people want to own assets that will earn them returns, and if an asset does not earn returns, it means it will lose monetary value over time, much like a painting where the owner allows the market to define its value.

This is currently happening to a lot of splinterlands assets that can no longer be used to compete in modern times; they are mostly just expensive, but a smaller number of people want them every day. It is unimaginable, though.

The dream of every Splinterlands player used to be to own a Yodin Zaku, but that is no longer the case. Some players would rather own a Akane than a Yodin, despite the latter being more powerful.

However, the Akane allows you to compete in Modern and earn a lot of money. Money, rather than status, is the goal. So it is really no big deal to be an OG anymore; just buy the latest generation and earn.

Players Follow The Money

I listed some of my older generation cards on the market, but I could not sell them; it was disappointing; I had to lower the price on them before I could sell them. I would never sold these cards before. They are the type of cards that retain their value over time, but because they are no longer in high demand, their prices will fall. I read a post from @libertycrypto. He said he had listed his Byzantine Kitty. This monster was among the most feared cards in the game.

This is one of the side effects of dividing ranked battles into Modern and Wild, with Modern having better rewards. In as much as this change had a significant impact on the game. It only goes to show that there are always negative/financial side effects to improvement.

Older generation cards were the real thing

They were the source of pride for most players who began playing the game very early. They were like incentives for being an early adopter or investor. Once upon a time,
Seeing a level 2 Kitty (Summoner) in a lineup used to indicate your opponent's financial situation; however, this is no longer true. So seeing him (libertycrypto) list the kitty for sale was extremely painful. I hope he gets the money he deserves for that beast; it was one of the cards that sold for top dollar during the 2021 bull run; well done, it was such a massive asset.

Well, it is the new reality

I intend to own only CL cards and Rebellion. Unfortunately, I am unable to purchase any Rebellion sets at this time due to financial constraints, but I was able to sell some of my older generation cards in order to purchase or upgrade some of my CL cards. The market seeks more CL and REBELLION sets because they are used to earn in modern, so I decided to upgrade two of my CL summoners with the proceeds from some of my few older generation cards.

Card & Summoner Upgrade

I increased the level of my Regal PERYTON to 3. Then my General Sloan and Tarsa. Summoners do not lose value in the game, and even if they did, the loss is not significant. All of my CL summoners are now level 3 or higher. I do not currently own any rebellion assets; I purchased some previously and sold them. I believe that buying the cards individually is a better value than relying on luck to land you a legendary or epic, which have higher financial value.

I can see why people would want to sell their older cards as we cannot use them in wild because it is full of bots. I hope they might make a human "wild" league and then we can keep our cards. Until then, the older cards will lose value as people sell them to play in modern.

It's exactly why I'm concerned for the wild league. It's an aftermath or a side effect of making modern more lucrative. I'm not sure they'll consider making a human league, but you save these cards, they truly need to. It's painful seeing someone put a Kitty up for sale to buy newer cards

It is. I am still trying to pick up these old cards that I am missing, but I dont know if I will really use them outside of brawls.

Buying to use only for brawls is quite limiting and sometimes it might not even be totally rewarding since the use cases are reducing by the day. I don't know if splinterlands Inc is really looking at this.

It sucks to see and it will only happen more as modern is incentivized by the team. They are reducing the pool on wild and increasing it on modern but modern is way harder now. It's a bit easier this season as some people have moved up but I have reached the point where maxed level decks are still quite common when my deck is only up to level 4 or so summoners.

I still have low level deck and I believe one way or the other, wild should be revamped and bots should be moved to a bot league. Good that it has become easier for you. I'm still surprised that some of the legendary cards we use to have are no longer as desirable as before

It is important to change the cards over time if the game is as good as it is if the cards are not changed it becomes much more difficult to win the game now that the prices are low we can all do it.

It worries me, prices of the alpha and beta cards has been coming down and they are becoming less powerful compared with new cards. They may become less used and cheap if the trend continues.
