Splinterlands: Land 1.5 is coming. Overview of land plot distribution and land holder DEC status.

Splinterlands has scheduled land 1.5 to be released Tuesday, November 14th, 2023. Thats tomorrow, and there has still not been any delays announced, even the recent Town Square indicated that a delay is possible. Land has been long awaited, and its very exciting that it could finally be here.

Edit: Shortly after posting this, a land delay was announced. The new planned release date is November 28th.

With the imminent land launch, it is interesting to take a look at the distribution and top holders of the currently claimed land plots.

This post contains:

  • Distribution of land plots between accounts as a function of number of plots held.
  • DEC held in accounts compared to DEC needed to power up land
  • Number of land plots with sufficient DEC to be used right away.
  • Top land holders

How is land distributed?

Data sampled at 15:00 UTC time, 13. nov. 2023

The distribution of land plots is shown in the table and figure below.

Number of plots in accountNumber of accountsPercentage of all plots
115191.1 %
<= 1031406 %
< 100354314.5 %
< 1000379445.5 %
> 10005154.5 %

Some takeaways: 3845 accounts hold a land plot. 51 accounts hold 1000 plots or more (equivalent of a region). Together these own more than half the claimed land plots. Accounts with less than one tract equivalent (100) plots, own only 14.5% of plots.

The plot below shows in more detail how the land plots are distributed between accounts of different sizes.

Are land holders prepared?

To be fully utilized, each land plot requires 50k DEC or a Runi to be powered up, plus possibly a power source. There are 150k land plots in total, giving a land the potential to absorb 7.5 billion DEC (7.5 million USD at peg), if we ignore the power source and Runis.

The chart below shows the number of land holder accounts as a function of how much of the DEC they need that are currently holding in their account. Each bar represents a fraction interval of 5%.

Since players can store DEC in other locations than their land account, this might not be completely accurate but it gives an indication

We can also examine how this fraction depends on how many plots the accounts have:

Number of plotsAverage ratio of needed DEC to held DECPlots with sufficient DEC
125.4205
2-1021.51137
11-9922.02186
100-2009.42054
201-99911.41557
>= 10007.55736

The results are not that surprising. The ratio of held DEC to needed DEC is higher for the lower plot numbers, as expected. However, the numbers are low, meaning that lots of accounts with very few plots do not have much DEC in their accounts at all.

For the tract and region owners, the ratio is low. This makes sense since the amount of DEC needed to fill all the worker slots for these accounts is very large. Even so, the region owners are able to fill a lot more plots than the other groups.

In total, slightly less than 13000 land plots (12875) can be filled immediately if all the DEC held in the land holder accounts is used for land. On top of that, Runis can be used to fill another 3521 plots.

Note that these calculations are based on the DEC balances sampled at one time point and that account DEC balances can have changed since that

Cool post, but there are 2 significant factors not considered. 50k DEC per plot is only required if you do not have a Runi and you are using 5 fully leveled cards to work the plot. There are several thousand Runi ready to work land and also many plots that will not be using fully leveled cards.
So at first glance it could look like someone is not ready at all, but in reality they might be fully prepared.

Thank you, those are good points! I will add those to the post.

(Do you happen to know if there is a way to find out which accounts have Runis assigned?)
