BATTLE MAGE SECRETS : FIRE & REGRET RULESET

Return Fire will trigger return damage from any hit made using ranged attack. Return Fire bring the least difficulties compared to other counter abilities (Thorns, Retaliate, Return Fire, Magic Damage, Backfire). There are few reason for this. First ranged attack are useful as damage maker from the back-row. But considering melee attack could be decorated with Reach, Sneak, and Opportunity abilities, they prove to be a contending substitute for ranged attack. Second while both ranged attack and magic attack tend to target directly into the first row, magic attack could be a more powerful substitute due to it will bypass any armor. So under "Fire & Regret", there's nothing to be regret? Or will it be?

Pros & Cons

Cons.png
1. Fire & Regret ruleset trigger return damage based on hit made using ranged attack. So literally having stronger melee card and magic card are an advantage. But any opponents would deploy Thorns or Void in anticipation in anticipation of more melee card and ranged card being used.
1. Compared to Briar Patch and Counterspell ruleset, Fire & Regret ruleset have the least impact. The reason is Briar Patch will deal full return damage (although still capped at 2 damage), while Counterspell will deal half return damage, but could also be triggered by missed magic attack.
2. Ranged card and magic card are the only attack type card able to launch direct attack into the first row. With limitation on ranged attack, there's higher probability to face more magic card from the back row. So bringing Void or Void Armor for the your Tanker would be an advantage.

The battle has 25 mana cap, with Regret & Fire and Odd Ones Out ruleset; while only Water, Death, and Dragon splinter are allowed to be used. For my formation, I used:

PositionCard NameLevelManaHealthArmorSpeedDamage TypeDamage
SummonerObsidian44-----
1st RowBone Golem47831Melee2
2nd RowCrypt Beetle33222Melee1
3rd RowDeath Elemental233-3Magic1
4th RowSilent Sha-Vi556-5Melee3
5th RowUraeus23212Melee2
6th Row--------

My opponent formation:

PositionCard NameLevelManaHealthArmorSpeedDamage TypeDamage
SummonerKelya Frendul14-----
1st RowCruel Sethropod13341Melee1
2nd RowChaos Agent111-2None-
3rd RowVenari Spellsmith153-2Magic1
4th RowPelacor Bandit132-3Melee1
5th RowNerissa Tridawn199-2Magic3
6th Row--------

In this ruleset, Bone Golem have been my favorite choice for Tanker due to its armor and Void ability. I decided to put secondary Tanker, Crypt Beetle, mainly for its Shield ability. My damage make shall come from Death Elemental followed with Silent Sha-Vi and Uraeus which will deal Sneak attack. In the other side, my opponent deploy Cruel Sethropod followed with Chaos Agent as cannon fodder. Venari Spellsmith is a wise choice considering the Protect should provide additional layer of armor. Then there is Pelacor Bandit with its Sneak attack. In my opinion having a 1 damage Sneak attack is a bit futile without other supporting Sneak attack. To my surprise, the last row are filled with Nerissa Tridawn, a very powerful raw magic card. It will put a test to my Silent Sha-Vi and Uraeus.

But on the bigger picture, my opponent already at handicap with Level 1 summoner against my Level 4 summoner.

I gain much advantage from Obsidian and Bone Golem. Both combined have dampened the 3 magic damage of Nerissa into an effective 1 magic damage. Death Elemental cast a spell that directly bring down Chaos Agent. Silent Sha-Vi and Uraeus both managed to crushed Nerissa armor and left it with 6 health remaining. By the end of the round, Bone Golem still stood solid with 2 armor and 7 health remaining. Meanwhile Cruel Sethropod only lost 3 armor so far.

image.png

Silent Sha-Vi and Uraeus continue their barrage toward Nerissa resulting with 1 health remaining on it. Uraeus have 1 health remaining being slowly hit by Pelacor Bandit. Meanwhile Death Elemental start to eye itself into Venari Spellsmith. The round ended with my formation stood solid, while my opponent at the bring of collapse since their back-row are left with 1 health remaining.

image.png

The 3rd round is colored with bloodbath. Silent Sha-Vi strike down Nerissa, then Pelacor strike down Uraeus, and finally Death Elemental score a kill on Venari Spellsmith. The battle continues with Bone Golem and Cruel Sethropod exchanging blow, only to have Bone Golem missing its attack.

image.png

The battle almost reached its end. Silent Sha-Vi and Death Elemental gained the earlier order. but their attack doesn't shake the formation. Bone Golem then bring the final blow into Cruel Sethropod.

image.png

With only Pelacor Bandit left alone with only 1 health remaining, there's no chances for my opponent to make a comeback; and this is where the battle is over.

Conclusion.gif

CONCLUSION

We don't see the direct effect of Return & Regret ruleset, basically because each players revert from using ranged cards. My first guess, as I have explained above, that my opponent will most likely bring their best magic cards. Because it is the best choice for the back-row damage maker and with armor bypass as addition. And its clear how bringing magic damage debuff and Void ability put magic cards formation in check.
