Besides card games, tower defense is one of my favorite game genre especially the upgrade ones. I like how you would try to make the best positioning and best set up for that battle.

Splinterlands has been making and reporting this new tower defense game that they are developing. You can use your Splinterlands cards and stake it on the towers in order to level up them making the two games related to each other.

It's already been a few weeks and the Closed Beta has been released for people who bought at least 500 Nightmare packs or the packs for Soulkeep in which you can obtain towers. These packs, unfortunately, cannot be opened as of this writing based on my knowledge but once everything goes live, I expect people left and right making opening videos for it.

For now, according to the time table Splinterlands gave, the release for Soulkeep's open beta is very near.

For now, to get some idea about the game itself, join me check out Bulldog1205's video about his first impression on Soulkeep.

The initial screen looks good and the animations are amazing. I do hope it would be compatible to mobile as well like the card game.

Towers and Spells

Currently there are 4 towers and 3 spells for the game. Very decent as a start. Tgere would be Heroes in the future but not right now on the closed beta.

Gameplay

The idea of the game is to eliminate the enemy before they reach the portal. You also have mana so you cannot just spam all the towers at the start of the game. One confusing thing is that there seems to be a crossroad on the map. There's no guides or whatever on how the enemy path will be. I think we will just have to learn it if there won't be any guide for it.

The spells acts more like a trap and it would activate once the enemies are in its range. Also, there is 5 towers and 5 spells at the bottom of the screen meaning you can carry up to 5 types of each.

One good thing is if you are just grinding, there seems to be a skip button just like in the card game Splinterlands meaning you can skip to the end to see the result.

Once the wave ends, you will get more mana and place more towers and spells and keep going until you lose.

My Other Thoughts

It seems promising. Although I am not a fan of the part where you cannot place new towers and spells during the wave. So, the gameplay is something like this:

Planning Battle Rewards.gif

Planning Stage is where you place towers and spells. You can also upgrade or sell towers during this stage to prepare for the Battle Stage.

Battle Stage is where you can either watch or skip the battle. Basically, it is just a waiting game for either if you win or lose. You cannot influence the game during this stage in any way.

Rewards Stage is like the rewards screen. It just shows how much you got on the current wave.

Closed Beta vs Open Beta

Based on my knowledge, in the open beta, there would be rules to increase replayability. It is the same as the Rules of Combat on the card game. Probably, it would be like some towers will be more ineffective than the other or the enemies have higher health and such.

In terms of rewards on the open beta. there is a gamble mechanics which is refreshing. Each wave, you gain rewards. Maybe, they're SPS, potions, packs, etc. However, you will have an option to Retreat and keep the rewards or Keep Going and risk those rewards in order to get better ones. Although once you lose, all those rewards will be gone as well. Imagine "Who Wants To be a Millionaire." You have a chance of playing another game and get higher rewards or just choose the rewards and keep whatever you got so far.

Yes. I think it is pretty good. The animations are not that 3D which I like. It reminds me of old type of tower defense you play in Kongregate or Y8 but it is still good. I like that the game is not that different than the other games but I am more excited about the rulesets. It gives the game replayability and honestly, gives game more depth and difficulty.

What I don't like is that you cannot influence the game during the wave. Maybe it is just a blockchain game thing but that limits your influence on maybe adding a last second spell to save your life.

I am also interested in how the card staking will affect the towers. I hope that the card staking only comes as a plus and not a core requirement. It is like, you can stake cards to make specific towers stronger but it doesn't mean you MUST because the enemies are too overpowered or you cannot level up the towers since your card staked is low. This may change it from being a good tower defense game to another pay2win game meaning, I need to stake like $10,000 worth of cards or else I cannot go past level 5 because the enemies are too overpowered for my level 2 tower that I cannot upgrade because of card staking requirement.

In any case, I am still excited and this is still in closed beta and that means it is mostly in the testing phase but yes, I am pretty excited for this. And since the new SPS requirements on the card game is too high for common players like me, I might play Soulkeep more once the game goes out. Hopefully, it doesn't require me also to have 18000 SPS staked to play the game on a decent level.

I hope there would be no SPS staked required or some additional requirements to get rewards.
