Although Splinterlands is often described as an auto-battler type trading card game, where players can earn while playing, I tend to see it differently.

To me, Splinterlands is more like a game manager simulation game, where you control a team of monsters, similar to games managing a football team and watching them play. Instead of picking plays or formations, you must select your monsters based on the sets of rules and watch as they battle for who is the stronger team. This unique style of gameplay looks complicated but is actually easier compared to more complex games like Yugioh.

Getting Started

In order to play, just simply click the big button on the middle of your screen that says, "Battle".

Playing requires energy, which can be stored up to a maximum of 50 units that get replenished at a rate of 1.25 per hour. If you want to play immediately, but don't have enough energy, you can purchase additional energy by simply pressing the "+" button beside the energy. The cost of extra energy varies depending on your league's level. The higher league you are, the higher the prices per energy.

As an example, in Bronze League, you can buy 1 DEC per energy while in Silver, it may cost 10 DEC per energy.

Basically, you will first be given a set of rules to follow.

This is composed of a Mana cap, rules of combat, and the available elements you can use for that combat.

Mana Cap: It displays the highest amount of mana you can use during the battle and you must ensure that the total combined mana cost of all your monsters and summoners does not exceed the given mana cap for the current battle.

Rules of combat: These are set of rules that affect both your and your opponent's monsters and/or summoners on the board in different ways. Some of it may increase the monster's specific combat prowess or may disable their abilities completely. A quick overview of all the possible combat rules can be viewed from here:
https://support.splinterlands.com/hc/en-us/articles/9123215350548-List-of-Splinterlands-Rulesets

Available Elements: This indicates the various elements that you can and cannot use for that battle, excluding the Neutral element. The Neutral category allows Monsters and Summoners to be used at any time for any available element unless the rules of combat prohibit it.

With the mana cap, available elements, and rules of combat to guide you, selecting a summoner and up to six monsters to form a team is required. The pairing of each monster with the relevant summoner is crucial for the battle.

For example, if you use a fire summoner, only fire monsters can be used for that battle and water summoners can only use water monsters and so on. There are exceptions to this rule, however, as the Neutral element can be combined with any other element except for Dragons.

In the case of the Dragon element, you must select another available element like fire to go along with it. Once assigned, you can use both the Dragon and Fire summoners, or either's associated monsters, plus any neutral monsters to build your ultimate lineup for the particular battle.

There are also summoners and monsters that are considered dual elements. Summoners that are dual element can use monsters from both elements while dual element monsters can be used if the summoner is one of those two elements.

Before the combat, it is essential to surf the marketplace for a potential numbers of summoners and monsters that you can use in the battle. These monsters and summoners can either be acquired by purchasing or renting from the marketplace. While purchasing is better as you can sell it in the future, renting is also good so you can try them first to see if it would fit your builds.

Strategy Tips for Beginners

Let me give you three combos that you can use to get you started.

shield + taunt.gif

This is a very recent strat that you can use with the Rebellion summoner, "Prophet Rosa." Some Rebellion summoners have this mechanic called, "Summoner Tactics", which can give monsters stats and after picking your team during the "Tactics Stage."

In this battle, as an example, I had the Taunt Shield set up and what this does is Taunt will protect all your monsters by redirecting all attacks to the monster with Taunt ability, while the Shield ability, attached to the Taunt monster, would have all the melee and range damage from your opponents..

martyr + born again.gif

It's not only abilities that give life to strategies. Most of the time, you need to include rules of combat as well. In this strategy, you abuse the Martyr's effect which gives +1 to all monster's stats that is beside it when it dies.

Born Again rule of combat gives Rebirth ability to all monsters giving them another life when they die. This means that monsters with Martyr ability like Venari Marksrat or Fungus Flinger activates their Martyr when they die and then gets revived again to use the Martyr ability for the second time after their second death.

You can abuse this idea more by adding monsters with Resurrection ability such as River Heliondale.

Calculating a monster's hit/evade chance is very simple. You can calculate it by using this simple formula: 100% - [(Defender's Speed - Attacker's Speed) x 10%]

Let's say, the battling monster is Scavo Firebolt with a speed of 2 and the defending monster is Exploding Rats with a speed of 5.

So, since the difference is 3, multiplied by 10% is 30% then subtract that by 100%, Scavo Firebolt has a 70% chance to hit Exploding Rats.

However, in this game, there's a hidden mechanic called, "Max Hit Chance." Calculating this is based on three abilities, Flying, Dodge and Blind.

To make this short, Flying, Dodge and Blind reduces the max hit chance to a mere 35%. So, even if the opponent has 100% chance to hit, they would only have 100% chance of 35% which ultimately gives them only 35% chance to hit.

Early Experiences

Since this is my second post about this topic, let me instead tell you the early experiences of others based on my observation, knowledge and from watching players in youtube and reading their articles from time to time.

You can find the other post I've done here:

I have observed from various player feedback and reviews through reading articles in the Battle Mage Secrets that one common challenge for beginners is understanding the different monsters and summoners, their abilities and how they can work together to create the most effective team strategy. This process can be confusing at first but with enough practice and experience, players can develop their own strategies and start dominating battles. I also heard some interesting stories of players pulling off insane comebacks or making vital tactical decisions that saved them from certain defeat in their early battles. These moments are what make Splinterlands so thrilling and addictive as a game.

Another challenge for beginners that I have noticed is finding the right balance between offense and defense. Knowing when what monsters and summoners to use, and getting it wrong can result in a swift defeat. It takes time to learn and master this aspect of the game, but with enough practice and careful observation of experienced players, it's possible to develop a solid gameplay strategy at every fight.

As for memorable moments, many players often recount the excitement of earning their first reward cards or making their way up the ranks during their early times of playing the game. Others remember hard battles where they pulled out unexpected wins against tough opponents. My own memory is when I got a Djinn Oshannus card and was able to sell it for $40 which boosted me in a lot of my early days.

Author's Note Banner.gif

Some of the tips found in the link below are outdated since I did this a year ago but a lot would still apply in today's games. You can even read it in some of my posts such as using terms that are easier to understand like "passive monsters" or monsters that do not have any types of attacks. I use this term when I use Weapons Training abilities as you need passive monsters to be trained.

It's easier to understand and you can use it as a guide to break down the complicated topics in Splinterlands:
