Avatars and Exemplars: What's New in Splinterlands?

Splinterlands has always been about cards, strategy and game knowledge but the new avatars and Exemplars customization system takes things in a very different direction. This update is not just about how things look on your profile but about how players exist inside the game, both now and the future.
Instead of being just a name behind a random picture, players now have their own identity that can grow, change and reflect their journey. With a lot of customization, progression and future possible effect on the gameplay tied directly to the player, Splinterlands is expanding to more than just an NFT trading card game.

Exemplars: Your Identity Across the Entire Ecosystem
Avatars are becoming your main identity across the whole Splinterlands ecosystem. Instead of a static image made by another person, players will create a DND-style character that represents them everywhere in the game. This includes choosing race, appearance, clothing, accessories, backgrounds, badges and even their own stats and abilities.
What makes this exciting is the level of freedom players have. External elements like outfits, frames and badges can be changed at any time, allowing players to refresh their look whenever they want. This makes profiles feel alive instead of locked in place.
Changing deeper traits like race or physical features requires special consumable items, which adds weight to identity choices. At the same time, it you can just buy it in the store so it wasn't that bad. Your Exemplar becomes your own personal creation, not just an icon.

Races, Bloodlines, and the Avatar Shop
The Avatar system introduces fantasy races such as Humans, Elves, Orcs, and Dwarves for now. There would be more planned for the future. These races help shape the look and theme of your Exemplar giving players more choices on what they want to become in the game. Over time, new bloodlines and races will expand this system even further.
Supporting all of this is the brand-new Avatar Shop, players can unlock more customization options. From basic identity choices to premium cosmetic upgrades that would cost a few Glints, the shop adds depth to personalization. This also creates a new cosmetic economy that does not interfere with the game.
The shop launches alongside Winterfest, the first seasonal Exemplar event. Limited-time cosmetics like festive sweaters, hats and outfits give players a chance to stand out during special events. This sets the foundation for future seasonal content that makes the world of Splinterlands feel more personal and it is your own creation.

Exemplars: Your Original Avatar
Exemplars are where the system moves your avatars to beyond visuals and into gameplay. Every player starts with a Level 1 Exemplar that grows over time by spending Glint. As Exemplars level up, players gain points that can be spent on stats, abilities, mana cost changes, and more.
Players can choose any basic Element or Dragon, shaping how their Exemplar develops. Over time, Exemplars can unlock up to five ability slots, allowing for deep customization and personal builds. This gives players control over how their character grows instead of relying on random pulls.
Importantly, Exemplars will not be used in ranked battles for now. Instead, they are designed for tournaments, challenges, future guild brawls and planned single-player content. These formats give Exemplars room to shine without disrupting the main gameplay of Splinterlands.

Flexibility, Experimentation, and the Future of Exemplars
One of the best parts of this system is how flexible it is. Two new consumables, Polymorph Potion and Capacity Flux, allow players to change their avatar's looks or rework their Exemplar build. Both items are craftable, tradeable and available through the marketplace.
Polymorph Potion lets players change their Avatar’s race and core traits without losing progress. Capacity Flux allows players to reset their Exemplar’s stats and reassign points in a new way. This encourages experimentation and removes the fear of making permanent mistakes.
Looking ahead, I feel like Exemplars are built for new formats and new ideas that will come in the future. The future tournaments, guild content and campaigns can be designed around player-created characters instead of just the builds alone. This means a long-term vision where the player is no longer just behind the cards but part of the game itself.

I think that the new Exemplars represent a major shift in how Splinterlands sees its players. Identity, progression, and how you view yourself in the game are now core parts of the experience, not just side features. This system adds new possible depth without replacing what already works.
By combining customization, progression and flexible design to the avatars, Splinterlands opens the door to entirely new kinds of gameplay. Players can now grow a character alongside their collection just like whenever you play your own DND character. This feels like the start of a new era where the player truly belongs inside the world of Splinterlands.
