Card Highlights #20: Regal Peryton
Card Highlights #20: Regal Peryton
────────────◈◉◈────────────
The noblest of all creatures, cherished by foresters and hunters alike. When it bows its crescent-moon antlers in subservience, foe becomes friend. Do not be fooled by its beauty. Play foolishly with it, and it lashes out with devastating results.

This is a unit I've been wanting to cover on for quite a bit now. Just like Goblin Psychic, it is a unit that is often just glossed over becaue it's a starter. It seems normal that we just use it as players not diving deeper on the possibilities if it's a good card or not that would serve its purpose the higher we get on the ladder. In this blog, I will do exactly that. Let's dive deeper and learn more about our favorite half stag half bird unit and see if it deserve to stay in our builds or it's better to let go before you get attached.
Lore
They say there is nothing more beautiful than a Regal Peryton. They prefer to live in the mountains all across the Splinterlands, rarely seen by others. When they soar through the skies, the sunlight catches through their wings and creates rainbows underneath them.
Regal Perytons are highly intelligent and consider themselves noble guardians of the natural world, using their magic to help others.

Card Stats
Card Effects
Flying |
Besides the increased chance to dodge enemy's attacks, the ability is also useful in cancelling the effect of rule set, Earthquake.
Strengths & Weaknesses
Regal Peryton's stats are good even on low levels. His high speed accompanied by Flying gives you a huge advantage if your enemies utilizes melee or range attacks as their strategy. |
The lack of abilities at higher levels is clearly a problem. Regal Peryton only has Flying ability which is only useful at certain situation. The ability does not give him a huge edge against enemies and the gap will only widen the higher you go on the ladder. |
When To Use
Earthquake |
Since Flying eliminates the Earthquake damage, it's only obvious to use him in this rule set.
Back to Basics |
With high stats and mediocre ability, it doesn't matter if the abilities are disabled in that battle. Actually, that might be more on your advantage due to Regal Peryton's stats.
Explosive Weaponry |
Since Regal Peryton has high damage at higher levels and magic attacks on top of that, having Blast is actually strong for him.
When Not To Use
Counterspell |
Due to the nature of his attacks, the higher his magic attack, the higher the damage that will be returned to him.
Weak Magic |
As unit with magic attack are the only one affected by the Weak Magic rule set, it's also the reason why it is a disadvantage for Regal Peryton.
Odd Ones Out |
There are only selected good units that you can use for Odd Ones Out. Fortunately, Regal Peryton is at 5 mana which fits the bill and requirement for Odd Ones Out.

The strategy is to increase Regal Peryton's stats with Martyr. I have Spirit Druid Grog to resurrect Fungus Flinger for another Martyr. With Obsidian, Regal Peryton gained a total of 3 magic attack which allowed him to one shot Meriput Magician at one point. This gave me a good chance to win due to the removal of his second tank, Meriput Magician.
Final Thoughts
Regal Peryton is a strange unit. It's good at early levels when you're still trying the game in. He isn't complicated and very straightforward.
As you get farther in Splinterlands, so is the enemies. While I still think Regal Peryton is decent in higher levels, you cannot deny that a lot more units will benefit you since they have team-oriented abilities that not only gives your one unit an advantage but everyone on your team.
Even so, I still see potential in this unit especially since it can cover two of the rule sets that I get a hard time dealing with, Back to Basics and Odd Ones Out. Regal Peryton is a good substitute for my other units when it comes to those rule sets.
