My Weekly Battle Mage Secrets - Fog of War

Overview

The new Weekly ruleset Challenge is an amazing twist that I am enjoying so far and I hope there will be twists like that in the future to keep this Challenge's fresh. 😁

This week the ruleset is the Fog of War, which means that all units lose their Sneak, Snipe and Opportunity abilities. The Scattershot still works in this ruleset.

A good tank and a balanced line up of Magic and Ranged monsters is the trick to win in this ruleset. Keep your monsters in an ascending order of their health.

The upcoming Battle ruleset

RulesetDescription
Tis but ScratchesAll monsters has the Cripple ability.
Keep Your DistanceMonsters with Melee attack may not be used in battles.
Fog of WarAll units lose their Sneak, Snipe and Opportunity abilities.

This battle had a 29 mana cap, which is not that much considering that some of the monsters in the game cost over 10 mana. All the Splinters were available to play, so it was very important to choose the strongest Splinter without any melee attack monsters. I was expecting that my opponent will bring monsters with big health to their front and I wanted to take advantage of the Tis but Scratches ruleset in order to counter their idea. 😁

My lineup

image.png
Quix The Devious is an amazing Dragon summoner, because his main abilities are to reduce the ranged damage and speed by one of all the enemy monsters. He cost 4 mana, because he is reducing two abilities not just one. The Dragon summoners are very versatile, because choosing the right summoner gives you a huge advantage from the beginning of the battle. They allow you to mix their monsters with another Splinter, so you will be able to use the best monsters of both sides and giving hard time for your opponent to prepare his team against it. 😉
The Venari Marksrat is one of the new Soulbound card monster, which means that you are not able to trade this card to anyone until the Splinterlands team decides otherwise. Currently they are account bound, so the only place to acquire them is from reward chests. This particular card has an interesting ability and that is the Martyr. When this Monster dies, adjacent Monsters get +1 to all stats. This allows us to use some pretty nice combination with other cards, especially in rulesets where you can predict where the opponent will attack. 😄

The Void Dragon is an excellent tank in the Keep Your Distance ruleset, because of his high speed, which will help a lot for him to survive the battle. I have tried to take advantage of the Martyr ability of the Venari Marksrat front of him to get some extra stats to evade and dodge all the incoming damages. If he falls than my entire team will die quick! 😎
The Spirit Hoarder was an airdrop card, so it was easy to acquire to any of us who bought a lot of pack from the Chaos Legion set back in the time. Sadly I was not lucky enough with my 70 pack to get any of that. 😞 This monster is quite powerful, but not in stats wise, but with his abilities. He is a perfect supporter and healer, who will heal the most damaged backline monster with his Triage ability. The Blind gives a nice layer of protection to any incoming melee and ranged attack, because it give +15% chance of evading those attacks. 😁

The Venari Crystalsmith is the perfect card for the Life splinter, because of her Tank Heal ability, which allows her to heal the tank in the front position at every round. The Venari family is very strong and I always try to include them into my team. The two ranged damage on her is also a nice addition for only 4 mana and if she can heal my tank once or twice that could change the outcome of the entire battle. 😎
The Pelacor Arbalest is an amazing ranged attack damage dealer within the Life deck. He has a +2 Ranged attack and +3 Speed, which is amazing combined with his most important ability, which is the Double Strike. This enables this monster to attack twice in each and every round. On Level 5 he learns how to fly with his wings, which will give him an extra layer of protection (+25% Evade against incoming Melee and Ranged attacks) and sometimes it proves to be very effective for example in an Earthquake ruleset. 😇

The Time Mage was an underrated card for me for a long time, because she has only 3 Health, so it is very easy to kill her, but the Fog of War ruleset would ensure that she will be the last to die. The most important strength of her is the two ability she possess, because one of the is Slow, which will reduce the Speed by one to all enemy monsters. (the quicker we are the quicker we won) The second ability is Rust, which will effectively remove 2 armor to every enemy monster, which is amazing in a battle with low mana creatures, where an armor piece could mean Life or Death! 😇

My opponent brought the most expensive Summoner of the entire game, which is Lux Vega. She cost 5 mana and she has three amazing abilities. She gives +1 speed, armor and health to all of her friendly monsters.

He choosed the Venari Wavesmith as part of his team, which gives +2 armor to all of his monsters, so the Rust ability came very handy in order to counter that.

Baakjira is a very strong tank especially in a battle, where there is no Snipe or Sneak, because he has the Heal ability with huge health. Normally I wouldn't be able to go through him with such a team that I have, but the Cripple ability on my monsters will lower his maximum health by one with each hit my team would make against him. 😊

In the second round my team killed his tank and the rest of the battle will depends which team will hit his target first. My team hit his Djinn Oshannus much more than his team hit my Void Dragon and eventually his tank died and his team didn't stand a chance against my team. 😉

Did your strategy work? What will you try differently next time?

My strategy was to bring a monster with high speed and defensive abilities in order to sustain a lot of attacks and damage and not just focusing on Heal and health, because the rulesets were countering that tactic. I love the idea of the Martyr ability, because it is much easier to use different strategies and it is possible to increase the stats of an otherwise mediocore or weak monster. 😇
