Splinterlands - Lord Arianthus Vs Gelatinous Cube, Surprising Results!

You ever had a Splinterlands battle that once you saw the formations you felt you were going to lose, but came out victorious? I just basically had one of those. A battle where I used a level 4 Gelantinous Cube and my opponent had a level 3 Lord Arianthus.

How I Picked my Formation?

The rule set no melee monsters and a mana cap at 17. Because of the rule set I went with Summoner Arlic that gave a +1 magic attacked. However while setting up formation I realized most of the magic attack monsters I had were 4 or 6 manas. I could either put in a Ruler of the Seas and Spirit Miner with 2 mana to spare, but knowing that if my opponent picked Prismatic Energy I would definitely lose, I decided to lean toward range attack. Furthermore Pirate Archer was going to be in the lineup because it was 2 mana.

I knew I needed a tank and was deciding whether I myself use Prismatic Energy or something else. I had a Cube and Peaceful Giant to choose from with the lowest mana cap of 5. I decided to go with Cube as my Gaint had no abilities at level 1 while Cube had Scavenger. I further thought that due to low mana match my opponent was either going to go with low mana monsters or I would do so. Hence I went with Water Elemental and Crustacean King as both were 5 and 3 mana respectively. Their heal ability would come in handy and my Water Elemental was the key monster to do all the killing.

This by no means was my ideal formation. Leaning mostly on range attacks and having no defense on magic and not taking advantage of my summoner's boost was not ideal. Yet the match turned out in my favor mostly due to my Cube holding its ground while Water Elemental, barely survived, through a barrage of attacks for several rounds and ended up knocking out all my opponents monsters.

Here is a link to the battle. Just the fact that a level 3 Lord of Arianthus is currently worth upwards of $30 I was amazed how my likely less than $3 formation would escape with a win. Goes to show not every battle when players put out expensive monsters will always mean victory.
