This week's battle mage secrets focuses on the Five Alive Ruleset.

The Five Alive ruleset in Splinterlands limits players to deploying five monsters instead of the usual six. This ruleset reflects the essence of the Five Alive game where players start with five lives and aim to outlast their opponents. While this restriction may appear simple at first its impact becomes more significant when combined with mana caps or other restrictive rulesets that can challenge one's planning. Like its version battles in Splinterlands under this ruleset begin with a group of five chosen monsters competing for dominance and victory.

  • Ruleset(s): Maneuvers, Heavy Hitters, Five Alive

Line-up Details

  • Lily Shieldpaw (summoner): +1 health, Camuflauge, and Triage Heal to all friendly monsters.
  • Djinn Chwala: melee tank with high armor, health and Thorns ability to aid it being in position one.
  • Chaos Dragon: DPS magic tank with Scattershot and Blast to deal high damage to backline.
  • Queen Mycelia + Goblin Psychic: support magic monsters + team buff in health and armor healing.
  • Mycelic Slipspwan: backline magic tank with Taunt ability and therefore absorb and attract all backline damage from opposition.

The following battle shows why you must maximise and ideally find monsters that can fill multiple roles in your lineup. Having a monster that can be a front-line tank and do damage immediately adds more utility to your lineup. In combo with legendary summoner Lily Shieldpaw, I made sure that I went with three high-health tanks (2 magic and 1 melee) to serve as the foundation of the lineup - Djinn Chwala, Chaos Dragon and Mycelic Slipspawn. Queen Mycelia and Goblin Psychic as the backline monsters that provided support damage but more importantly provided those crucial team buffs in health and armor regeneration these monsters proved to be critical while providing team buffs, but the additional magic support damage was vital in chipping away at the opposition backline and clinched victory.

The introduction of the Five Alive ruleset brings a dimension to Splinterlands pushing players to enhance their strategies. With one less monster available, the player faces a decision - should I focus on damage dealers, or support troops or should I reserve slots for long-range and magical monsters with buff and debuff abilities? Making this choice can be overwhelming and that's where the excitement of the challenge lies. It's like figuring out the strategies in another card game called Flux, where restrictions on card numbers make the game more complex.
