Where Is the Reward Satisfaction Loop? | Splinterlands #355

In last week's post, I discussed the new Glint token that splinterlands has introduced. This change went live this week on 2nd April. I acquired enough Glint tokens to open one Master Draw and one Elite Draw.

The Master Draw I received ten copies of a common card and the Elite Draw I received two copies of an elite card. Is this system better than the previous one? It's too early to tell, but I do not know whether this is better than the previous system but am keeping an open mind. The splinterlands team needs time to process the data, analyze and then make changes, as necessary. Matt has come out already in Discord and posted an official message, so they are looking at it.

The thing is -- I cannot quite shake the feeling of not having tradeable reward cards. There is no satisfaction or feeling of saving up the Glint tokens and then using them to open Soulbound cards (untradeable) because there is no monetary value attached to them. The joy and that feeling (call it the gambler high) you get when you pull something that is of substantial value is a great feeling. My most memorable pull from a reward daily chest -- was a Gold Foil Almo Cambio and I still have the card it provided 50k collection power which was super valuable to assist my alt account with its collection power requirements when that system was still in place. Now there is no gauge to determine whether the cards I pulled from the Master and Elite Draws were good.

I read a few community posts and this post by @behiver details a lot of hard-hitting points, which frankly makes me a bit concerned as to where splinterlands is. I have had previous concerns with splinterlands when it was known that the runway was minimal to sustain the company and those fears were abated by the successful pre-sale and initial general sale of the Rebellion set.

If You Build It, Will They Come?

Why are we constantly seeing social media posts by content creators talking about Big Time, and Parallel? There is that satisfaction loop and naturally being Web 3.0 it's tied to a financial aspect as well. Are they making it easier for casual players to onboard onto their games? Splinterlands does have a strong competitive scene, with many of the top players fighting in the upper echelon of the Champion League and this is important as it gives everyone a North Star goal to work towards and I think the new ranking system does facilitate it. However, how does splinterlands make the game attractive and accessible to new players?

Relying and focusing on a hardcore base of players is high risk. You need new players to come in and work in the system as they bring in fresh ideas, perspectives and most importantly -- inject money into the ecosystem. This is what Magic The Gathering has achieved with their very successful mobile app -- Magic: The Gathering Arena, which has made playing MTG very accessible to even the most casual player. It allows players to try the game, get comfortable with the mechanics and then if they want, they can go and experience the hardcore experience in the TCG game.

I started this post with a discussion of the new Reward Shop and pivoted along the way in discussing how splinterlands can reach the masses. So, what are the options? We need to get people excited about opening rewards again. We need to get people to put out content that the Master Draw or whatever option they opened in the reward shop earned them [xxx] monetary value. That satisfaction loop is important, you need to reward the players something to keep them coming back daily. The players are going to be the loudest and most vocal cheerleaders of the game. Let us get back to basics.

Jungles of Thece Land Update and SPS 100k Target

Regardless of what the crypto environment has been doing the past week, splinterlands has only experienced the downsides with the price of SPS falling 15% the past week. The impacts of these decreases, negatively impacts the APR and Payback Period for the Land plots investment. On the positive side, I am taking advantage of the SPS price decreases and DCA another 5k+ SPS tokens and staked it towards my 100k SPS target.

Land Overview

  • Total Spent: $267.524
  • Amount Regained: $3.9 (230 SPS post-tax) (-$0.5)
  • Payback Period: 14.12 years (-2.26 years)
  • Annual Percentage Rate (APR): 7.08% (-1.35%)

Based on the current price of SPS ($0.0173)

SPS Staked

  • SPS Staked: 64932 (+5252 SPS)
  • Progress to 100k target: 64.9% (+5.2%)

Why are we constantly seeing social media posts by content creators talking about Big Time, and Parallel?
  • They have big investors. (money to pay influencers)
  • They have a centralized Exchange Listing.
  • They are early in the Ponzi and no big in-game asset bag holders who look to sell.
  • The earnings are high so enough new players who are willing to get in just for that.

Everyone is now going to Parallel most of all because earnings are unsustainably high allowing to earn back the 0.01 ETH investment in a matter of days. They already had to lower the rewards and it's likely going to be a similar story to Splinterlands/Sorare/Exie/... where eventually the entire 'reward economy' collapses upon itself.

If anything the entire situation with Splinterlands shows that they actually have a game players are not fully willing to give up on yet which it good while at the same time it just needs to become more fun in a way anyone can come in without a massive investment.

In the end, it always comes down to enough new players coming in to hold up prices.

Ah thanks for the context. I don't keep up with Eth play 2 earn games because gas fees puts me off, but everywhere I look on X, Parallel is being mentioned.
