The light still exists when the sun does not shine. The darkening of Splinterlands. Week 23 Chaos Pack opening.

Darkest Day of the Year.

Dec 21 will be the shortest day of the year for the northern hemisphere. The further north you go, the darker it becomes with no light at the north pole.

I think about this as I think about Splinterlands. Especially, Chaos Legion. Packs came out about a year ago. And there were a lot of them available, like a lot of sunshine in summer time.

Splinterlands created 15 million packs.

That's a lot of cards! And what is pretty amazing is more than 11 million packs have been sold. See screenshot from Splinterlands above.

But what happens when there is more product (cards) on the market than players who need cards?

The value of the product declines. Look at the screenshot below from splintercards.com

image.png

See the end column? If you review all the Chaos Legion cards, they are all in the red, all negative all in the dark. Almost all are worth half or less than half from a year ago.

You can make the argument that it's a bear market, but that's not it.

Simply put, there are not enough players that want the cards. There's only two solutions, burn the cards or find more players. If card values keep declining and DEC keeps climbing, burn may become the option. And burning is almost a profitable option at this point. Here's a good article on it https://peakd.com/hive-13323/@pwbanker/i-m-burning-these-golden-cards#@pwbanker/rms4np Thanks to @pwbanker for sharing.

So it seems like we have a darkening in Splinterlands. Like we are running out of daylight since Chaos Legion cards keep dropping in value, but I say, make your own light! Let the great card burning begin!

And onto this week's pack opening...

I am opening 52 packs in 52 weeks of Splinterlands Chaos Legion. I purchased the packs at around $2.25 on Tribaldex, which is a great discount from the retail price of $4 a pack on Splinterlands. But not so great since Splinterlands introduced a holiday sale and packs are now selling for $1.28, which is below my last buy point. However, at the quick drop in card prices, I think I will hold off on buying until we get closer to $1.10.

But will I have a profit at the end of the year? Again not this week. The return on this pack was a shabby $0.54. The cumulative cost at this point is $51.75, while the return is now at $58.19. That early profit margin continues to decline each week. We're not half way through yet and I don't know if the early days will be strong enough to overcome the card value drop each week!

I got a feeling that I am about to torch $0.54 worth of cards. Let's create our own light.

And remember, even on the darkest day of the year, the sun still shines bright somewhere.

I agree things aren't quite as rosy as they were. They made way too many chaos packs and the burning should help some, but I don't think the chaos packs will ever go for $20. There are just too many of them and too few players at the present. If we can attract more players that will change the dynamics significantly. But I'm still playing and enjoy the game, and that's really what counts (although I wouldn't complain if my collection recovered it's previous value!)

That pack opening really sucked! Hopefully next week will bring the gold legendary for you, I'm still holding out hope!

I still am long-term bullish on Splinterlands. I try something new each month to move the investment forward. I am still stacking SPS. I combined my low levels so that they will rent more often. I will ride out the rough surf.

I'm doing the same, leveling up really makes a huge difference in rental prices. I keep stacking SPS, and hope we will break out of the two cent range sometime soon!

I am selling the GLX to buy more SPS. Once I hit my SPS goal, I think I will start converting some of the rental DEC into HBD and put it in savings.

Not a bad idea especially since GLX isn't really attached to a working game yet. And in HBD you earn twenty percent, not a bad plan!

We will burn these damn cards until there are fewer of them, until deflation starts. Let's start with gold foil.

I used to play Splinterlands almost every day. I was never very good, but I'd win some and lose some and always get that daily quest done. Something happened a few months ago though. I couldn't win. Not one match. No matter what. After a few days of that I got discouraged and just quit playing. I play Gods Unchained. I'm MUCH better at that game.

Is Gods Unchained a play 2 earn? I think the bots improved in Splinterlands and if you don't have enough higher dollar cards, it is pretty hard to win.

Gods Unchained is play to earn. It's a card game like Splinterlands, but the games are longer and it's human on human. They are very aggressive against bots. Check it out! You might like it.
