The Splinterlands team recently announceed They have scheduled for October 25th, 2022 at 2pm EST to sell 6,500 Runis. Each Runi is a generative art piece which brings a new, limited edition promo card to Splinterlands. This card, called Runi, only exists as a level 4 legendary, and, every single copy of this card will feature unique artwork!
In this post I will try to take a look at the concepts behind the generative art and how it has changed the NFT worlds and why it is very creative step from Splinterlands to enter to this world.

Introduction

The term generative art describes pieces of art that have gone through a generation process by a system that “is set into motion with some degree of autonomy" contributing to or resulting in a completed work of art.

In simpler terms, generative art can be perceived as a joint effort between an autonomous system and an actual artist. Generative artists utilize code, algorithms, and a set of rules to develop a process that a computer program can follow on their behalf to generate new pieces of art.

Generative art is created by running a machine algorithm, whether it’s developed as an NFT or not. However, minting a generative art NFT helps add a unique level to the piece of art that would have otherwise not been achieved before. Generative art can now be created by running a smart contract. A smart contract is code stored on a blockchain under a certain address — mostly on Ethereum. By sending crypto — mostly ETH — to this address, the smart contract is triggered, and the code stored under the address is executed automatically.
Artists can mint generative art NFTs by adding code to the art, such as gas price, wallet ID, or transaction ID. While most NFTs have been original creations by people, the incipient AI-generative NFTs accentuate the potential for artists to collaborate with machines and generate unique pieces of art.

AI-generative art programs

Eponym

Eponym tool allows users to create art based on their text of choice and then mint these creations directly to the largest NFT marketplace, OpenSea. Eyal Fisher, co-founder of Art AI, told Cointelegraph that Eponym allows for any phrase to be transformed into a unique NFT art piece that will forever be etched onto the Ethereum blockchain as a visual representation. “Eponym is a collaborative NFT project. Users access it by coming to the website and typing any phrase or word into a text box. The AI then generates artwork based on the text entered.”

Metascapes

Metascapes is another project that was developed by three photographers looking to combine human expression with computer algorithms. Ryan Newburn, one of the photographers behind Metascapes, told Cointelegraph that the project consists of 3,333 rare AI-generated NFTs based on photographs taken across the world. Like Eponym, Metascapes leverges AI algorithms to create nature-inspired NFTs.

Autoglyphs

Established in 2019 by LarvaLabs, the creators behind CryptoKitties, the Autoglyphs is recognized as the first generative NFT art project. The project created on-chain generative NFT art with a code running on the Ethereum blockchain. From the start, the glyphs supply was limited to 512 NFTs, which have all been generated and sold. It’s estimated that the Autoglyphys reached a total sales volume of $41 million.

Art Blocks

With a total sales volume of more than $994 million, Art Blocks is one of the most successful NFT projects.The project runs on the Ethereum blockchain, creating abstract pieces of art like the series of Fidenzas, Chromie Squiggles and Ringers. what Art Blocks essentially does is allow you to browse through myriad styles and types of generative projects that are hosted on its platform. The amount and variety available at this stage is already huge, but the process doesn’t stop here! Once you find an artist or style that you like, you select the project and purchase an iteration (note: iterations are sometimes limited, so there is a chance your preferred work is already sold out!).

Lost Poets

Poised as Pak’s most in-depth NFT project to date, Lost Poets is an NFT-based collection and strategy game. The project’s release has several stages. Although the future of the Lost Poets project was shrouded in mystery, it went ahead to achieve an initial sales volume of $70 million when it launched in September 2021.

Cryptopunks

Recently, the NFT field experienced one of its first major mergers, with the company behind the Bored Ape Yacht Club1 (BAYC) NFT collection acquiring Cryptopunks2, another prominent NFT collection. The purchase included the intellectual property rights underlying Cryptopunks, with the goal of providing owners of a Cryptopunk NFT with the same comprehensive intellectual property rights as those provided to owners of a Bored Ape

Conclusion

Generative art as such is nothing new and has been around for centuries in several kinds of art such as paintings or music. What is new is the opening of the art market by making new pieces of digital art tradeable and affordable for everyone capable of entering a blockchain.
Moreover, Given the uncertainty around whether a particular generative art NFT collection is afforded copyright protection in Canada (Copyright Act [the Act], which provides copyright protection for every “original” artistic work. The Supreme Court of Canada has established that for a particular work to be considered original, it must be the result of an exercise of skill and judgement6, which depends on factors such as whether creating the work involved the use of the creator’s knowledge or ability, or whether different possible options were evaluated in producing the work.), purchasers should determine how the NFT artworks are created and the extent of any skill or judgment exercised. Further, if copyright protection exists, then it is important to carefully examine the terms and conditions, licenses, and the Smart Contracts governing the NFT collection to ensure that a valid transfer of copyright occurs from the legal author(s) of the artworks underlying the NFT collection.
Splinterlands did a great job to enter Generative Art world in general and it allows people around the world to use thier real and unique art generated heros to play within a great card playing Blockchain game like Splinterlands which no other competitor already have done such a project.
